Amazon Prime Automatic Renewal?

I honestly don't remember reading anything about Amazon automatically renewing your prime membership, without the customer's permission, when I signed up for it a year ago. They offered it to me for $59 so I decided to give it a try. I knew the renewal was coming up soon, but I expected to receive an e-mail or something from them letting me know. Was extremely surprised to open the credit card statement today and see a $99 charge from them to renew it. :(

I did not want to renew it, we just don't use it that much so renewing even at $59 wasn't going to happen. I knew the regular price was $79 and I wouldn't want to renew at that price either, and certainly not at the $99 that they have raised the price up to now.

Has this happened to anyone else, or did I just miss something and this is what they automatically do?

I will be contacting them as I do NOT want it renewed. We just don't use it that much. I rarely order from them as it seems like their prices have skyrocketed, and I don't borrow books for my Kindle as I either get free ones or borrow from our library. And I don't use the streaming of TV shows/movies much, as it seems to need to stop and buffer quite often and we don't have that at all with our Netflix streaming. So it is just not worth the price.

Yes, it happened to kids who did the college trial of Prime. DD tells me she can't find where to opt out, we have a few more months so I need to check into it.

I went to the prime membership page on their website and could cancel my renewal there. I could cancel now and receive a full refund, or there was another button to click on to cancel it the next time it comes up for renewal. I'm glad it was easy to do, but made a note of it so when my next credit card statement comes I want to make sure they did refund it.

I'm sure the credit will appear in your account within 2 to 3 days.

I've got to do that. My DD got it for a trial, my DS still has it at the student price which I use sometimes. He won't qualify as a student any longer though, so I should have him cancel too.

mine showed up on my amazon order page. I order a couple of times a week from amazon, so I saw it. If you didn't order often I could see how you would miss it.

I believe Prime has always been an automatic renewal; it certainly has for all the many years I have been a member. And the terms and conditions agreed to when joining Prime clearly state it will auto-renew.

This page explains about the Prime charge, including that renewal is automatic. It also gives links to let you manage your Prime membership, including canceling it.

This explains how to end Prime membership:

Note: "To cancel a paid Amazon Prime membership, click End membership.

Note: Paid members who haven't placed an Amazon Prime eligible order are eligible for a full refund. You can't receive a refund if any of the household members have placed an Amazon Prime eligible order

"Membership Cancellation

You may cancel your Prime membership any time by visiting Your Account and adjusting your membership settings. If you cancel within 3 business days of signing up for or converting from a free trial to a paid membership, we will refund your full membership fee. We may charge you (or withhold from your refund) our regular prices for Prime benefits used by you and your account during this 3-business day period. If you cancel at any other time, we will refund your full membership fee only if you and your account has not made any eligible purchases or taken advantage of Prime benefits.

Under "Fees and Renewal" it clearly states the fee renews automatically each year.

Automatic renewal used to be optional but I can't find it on my account page anymore.

They usually send you an email a month or two before it's due to renew. At least, they did last year.

It was pretty upfront that it is automatic renewal when we signed up. You probably just missed it.

They didn't do it this year. Mine just automatically renewed. (not a problem for me, I order all sorts of stuff from Amazon.)
