Amazon is offering Prime for $72 on Saturday. Does anyone know if there would be any downside to cancelling my Prime membership and then just resigning up with the $72 offer. My Prime just renewed on January 12, so I am hoping I would just get credited back most of the $99 from the renewal so I could get the better rate. Any thoughts?

You might not have to cancel. Chat up customer service and see if they will price match.

They do give you credit when you change your Prime. I moved from regular Prime to Student Prime (two kids and a DH taking college courses) this summer.

I think as long as you haven't used it you would get a full refund. There also may be a time period in which you can use it and still get a refund, like 14 days or something like that.
I'd call or do chat, Amazon has great CS, maybe they will just refund you the difference.

Its a good deal for those on the fence about trying.

I think I might do a quick chat tomorrow with customer service and see if I can get them to the deal for me. I guess it doesn't hurt to try :thumbsup2

Just received an offer from American Express for 1 yr. free Amazon Prime, plus $200 credited after first $1,000 charged (no annual fee).

Fyi - I was able to get the $72 price even though I am not a "new member". My old membership expired in Sept I think but it did let me get the lower price! Give it a shot and see what they say.

jennab ....Your old "Prime" membership expired in September so you were not a Prime member when you just signed up for Prime at $72 per year.

For current "Prime" members wanting the $72 deal, just log-in to amazon.com, today, 1/24/15 and GIFT yourself Prime at $72.00. (gift to same email address you presently sign on to amazon.com with) Have the gift sent just a day or two prior to your current Prime membership expiration date. This will process without issue with amazon, you will be billed $72 today and the $72 subscription will kick in when your old one expires. So, you get an additional 12 months for $72, end of story. 8-):dance3: Saving you $27

True! When I saw "new only" I was thinking people who had never signed up!! Good to know about the gifting option :)

In reading through the offer, it looks like you can make the "gift" active on any day you choose for the future.

It just so happens that my account is going to renew next month. I was thinking if I let it expire, I could then reactivate it with the gift. I noticed when I put it in my cart that you can go out to dates that it "activates" throughout 2016. So, if your account expires in the future, I think you could do the same. Also, it does specifically indicate that gift accounts expire and do renew. I may buy two. One for this year and one for next when it expires again.

Thank you for this post and for helping me save money. I really appreciate the savings! Every little bit helps.

That's what I did last year right before the price changed.

I want to do this and I want to do it right, help me! Our current prime is set to auto renew on 2/5. If I gift myself a membership to start on 2/4 (so the membership never lapses), how to do I then cancel the auto-renew without canceling the prime altogether? Does that make sense? There doesn't seem to be a way to stop the auto-renew or stop the prime as of a certain date when I look into managing my membership, there is only a way to end prime right now.

Thanks for posting this. My Prime membership will expire in July, so I just gifted myself a renewal.
