AMAZING RACE 5 - Official Thread

The taking turns for roadblocks, I don't agree with. My future daugher-in-law and I applied and we had already agreed who would do the tasks. I would do the eating tasks and she would do the swimming or biking tasks and I would do the ones involving heights and other ones we would decide at that time.

Chip and Kim are on now Regis and Kelly. They have been married for 20 years and together for 26 yrs. They have three children. It was Chip's idea to enter AR. They are AR fanatics and they are the oldest couple ever to win AR. Chip said the most difficult was the physical challenges getting his big 'ol butt up the ladder or up the wall. Chip is a former actor. He played Mohammed Ali in his youth in the movie "The Greatest" (and they showed a picture). Regis said he could play George Forman now.

My question is, with the roadblocks, don't you have to decide on who does what before you even get there?
It just gives some sort of a clue like the vertigo thing, then you have to try to guess on the spot what it could be and decide who would do it.

Regis is right, he could play George...LOL
I DVR'd the show, Im going to check it out this weekend, did they make any mention about Kim not doing many tasks?

Also, GOOD LUCK on getting on the show, I would LOVE to see DISers on there...LOL You could wear a DIS shirt so we would know!:hyper:

That's a very good question, and I would hope that for the integrity of the show to remain intact that it wasn't planned ahead of time. My guess is that since Colin called the night before, the show had time to send someone to Dallas, find the Town Car Service, and install the camera. They should have had about twelve hours, more or less, to do it.
I can't believe that they would have set that up ahead of time. It would have pretty much guaranteed that the driver would have showed up at the airport. That's not fair.

The team's cameraman was probably sitting in the front seat. Couldn't those pictures have just been him turning the lens on the driver from close range? A/V isn't my specialty so feel free to tell that's impossible, if it is.

Side note: The anonymous camera and audio guys that follow the teams around the world are really the unsung heroes of this show, aren't they? For example - I'm remembering two seasons ago when the teams had to drive through Spain. Each team had to stop for gas, and about half the teams put unleaded instead of diesel in the car. The camera zoomed in on the words "Diesel Only" inside the gas cap, and the sound guy caught one of the players saying "time to get some unleaded." That was awesome!

On a weaker show they just would have interviewed the people that screwed up afterwards. AR catches them in action. That's why they win Emmies.

Fortunately, I knew what a scarab was and I know what vertigo is. I don't know what vertigo has to do with climbing a wall and heights. Vertigo: dizziness, lightheadedness, unsteadiness. Fear of heights and the feeling of being dizzy are two different things in my book.

I recall that Colin called ahead for a "car" from Canada to meet them in Dallas. He made a point of saying that he needed a fast driver - so there was the limo (towncar) waiting for them. It wouldn't be unfair to mount a camera where they did, knowing that Colin was the one who had ordered the car. On the other hand, I sure wish that they had gotten a ticket for driving on the shoulder - Colin going balistic would have been "film at 11!"

Kim, herself commented on not doing much...other than navigating. But what does it matter if her husband didn't mind doing everything?

We were sitting around at work (I work for a major airline... the one that was delayed in Calgary!:D ) discussing how the other two teams managed to make that flight to Denver (I think it was the one to Denver...). We decided the producers of the show probably paid to get volunteers off the plane to make room for the other other two teams. Otherwise the game would have been over, because no would would have had a chance to catch up with Chip and Kim.
Just speculating.

I thought the same thing ElizK. I remember the scene where the CSR said, "We were able to clear you...." when it looks as if there would be no way. At the time I just thought maybe a group of pax didn't show up or something. I forgot they mentioned the volunteers.
I'm surprised that the CSR didn't tell them that they'd have to claim their bags in Denver if they didn't plan on flying AA. They didn't show it to be discussed, but I bet it was. How stupid on the C&C and B&N to assume post-911 that they can check bags and not be on the plane.

Excellent show, excellent ending.

Not to mention that Kim didn't tell Chip what he was doing wrong while she was watching. Unlike Christie when Colin was struggling with the ox. She totally refused to help, then pointed out what a crummy job he was doing. Colin was ready to blow his stack and Christie sure wasn't helping matters any.

BTW - The all time worst at this was the infamous Flo from two years ago. She did absolutely nothing, making her poor boyfriend Zach do all of the work. Then she sat on the sidelines whining about how he was losing it for them. The half million he got for dragging her butt around the world wouldn't have been enough for me.

ITA. Flo was the WORST! ::yes::

How true. We were on a flight home from FL and were delayed in taking off because they kept asking three people to stand up and identify themselves (they never did). Apparently their bags made the flight but they didn't. They then had to take the bags off the plane before we could take off.

My 78 year old dad suffers from vertigo, and unfortunately confuses the word "vertigo" with another word. When people ask him how he is doing, he is likely to respond: " I am fine, except that darned VIAGRA is making me dizzy ".

I heard this morning that Amazing Race 6 is starting a week from tomorrow...anyone else hear that?

Great Show! I also agree that the scene in the airport where people are giving up their seats for people on standby seemed a little fishy - money must have changed hands somewhere behind the scenes.

DS (aged 11) knows what a scarab is, knows what the word vertigo means, AND knew which flag belonged to the Philippines, LOL. As soon as he's old enough I'm signing him up for AR23 in order to finance his university education!

Travelbug24 - I agree with you that vertigo and acrophobia are different. I assume the implication was that someone who suffered from dizzy spells wouldn't want to have to be very far above ground level?

Frankly, most of the women did far fewer roadblocks than the men. I can only remember Kim, Nicole, and Christie each doing one:

Kim - digging for the Scarab
Nicole - eating caviar
Christie - eating caviar.

Have I forgotten some? I seem to remember that the guys all chased for a red ribbon on a calf, ate chocolate, went down inside a tomb for a satchel, ate ostrich egg omelettes, rolled downhill in the zorb ball, climbed the bridge, climbed the cliff and did a bunch of other stuff that doesn't spring to mind.

Okay, here's my idea for next show. At the pit stop, each team has to answer 20 multiple choice questions about the place they're visiting (without their guide books).

e.g. Which flag belongs to Egypt?
What type of currency is used in Egypt?
What language is most commonly spoken in Egypt?
What is the approximate population of Egypt?
What is the predominate religion of Egypt?

For each question you get right, you get one minute added to your lead. That might help people to know what continent they're on. Remember the contestants going to Tanzania and saying "we're going to Africa!"? Ummm, actually, you're already there. Remember Nicole and her comments about the churchy things (aka mosques) on every corner? Then you'd get marks for being observant, too, or trying to communicate more with the people you meet.

Oh well, thanks for giving us all a place to talk about AR5.

Here's toasting the early arrival of AR6,

I'll do another league for the next season whenever it's released to be open if everyone is interested.

DH and I were talking about that as well as the fact that the roadblock that saw the end of the bowling moms was a task that required more upper body strength which men do tend to have more of. I said they should make it a new rule that each team must take turns doing the roadblocks. That way a team can't rely on one strong member to do all of the tasks. I think it would have made a big difference in how things turned out this last game!

Or maybe instead of having the teams members having to do every other task, they have a rule where each team member must do at least 50%(or even one member do at least 40 %) of the roadblocks by the end of the race. That would require some strategic planning. So if someone did have vertigo, the other would have to be available to do the rock climb. Or maybe someone has food allergies - they have to leave open the possibility of eating something.

Did anyone read in the papers that Colin and Christy got engaged? I just saw a snippit of this somewhere the other day. I guess this experience really brought them close together.

I saw it in the peoples magazine, they got engaged on the early show the morning after the last episode.

Wonder why that [technique] sounds so familiar...

Heads up for AR 6.

Just saw in a Yahoo article that the next AR 6 is premeiring Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. with a two-hour episode. It will air regularly on Tuesdays at 9. They moved it from Saturdays because they are going to move that new series Clubhouse to Saturday nights when AR was supposed to air.
