Am I wrong?

Our neighbor's dog barks incessantly too. They have 2 dogs, both on the smaller side. I believe they do not like the barker much. They put it outside on a cable and leave it all day. The other dog isn't out there nearly as often. I suspect the dog doesn't behave in the house. I feel bad for the dog but the barking is annoying. There is something every month in the city newsletter about barking dogs, but I doubt these people read it. We didn't care much for these people even before the annoying dog joined the household. Luckily there is an extra lot between us so it isn't as bad for us but I pity the neighbors on the other side and the ones behind them.

No. You installed a device on your own property. It is not your responsibility to pay for him to have his own dog trained.

You handled it better than I would have if someone suggested I pay for their expenses because they can’t afford it. Put some bird seed near the bird house. Now it’s a bird house.

I had a similar situation with my neighbor. 3 dogs home alone 12-14hrs/day barking incessantly. I dealt with it the first summer. Was ready to by them a Cesar Milan dog training guide as the next outdoor season approached... but they moved :)
New neighbors have 1 dog well trained. It barks once or twice and that’s it. It alerts and then zips it’s lips. Love them!
Goodluck.

I am married to a woman who had a 25 hour a day barking dog....when we left the house...non-stop barking while in the thin trailer house...she use to leave it outside because he would tear the house apart if left inside. Neighbors would tolerate the dog because we are a community that depends on each other, it was so bad, that on holidays if she went to another function , I stayed home with the dog, many folks BBQ on holidays here..who wants to listen to that.
The dog started biting people so he was put down.

* dog was trained poorly and had sever separation issues
* nothing but our company quieted him
* wife always thought it was the neighobrs problem, not hers to resolve...as the barking was never bothersome to her...she didn't hear the barking while gone.
* neighbors complaint about the dog wore on her...to the point of inappropriate anger toward others..

now here is the catch-22, her dog gone, new neighbor has a dog that yeps seldom, not enough to even be considered a problem...but my wife...big issue...no one should have a barking dog...my point.... tread lightly with folks who not resolve their barking dog...there are underlying issues with the owner.

Are there other dogs in the area? They’ll be hearing the same sonic sound. We had a big issue in our HOA because one of these was hurting non-barking dogs in the vicinity of a barking dog which seems pretty cruel.

If this is the case (I don't personally know how far these sounds carry), it's not fair to the dog to cause it, or other dogs in the area, pain. If it's not stopping the barking anyways, perhaps it should come down?

From what I understand, it's an annoying sound for dogs and doesn't physically hurt them unless the dog is right next to the machine.

There’s a lot of ground between annoying and physically hurt. Dogs that suffer from anxiety or have trauma issues (a lot of shelter dogs) do become stressed at these noises and suffer. Since Non-barking dogs in the vicinity can be affected by these and it’s sort of like being the 3rd neighbor in a neighborhood stereo contest, I personally would not be comfortable using them.

Thank you for this post. I had forgotten about the ant-barking birdhouses. I am at my =wits end with my dog right now. She goes out in the evening and barks at the woodline. I though it was early for the deer to be moving but maybe not. Anyway, I have a remote controlled collar that emits anything from a beep to a vibration to a shock. Of course, it only works when it is charged. That dog was off the chain last night. There is now a sonic birdhouse in my Amazon crt. Thank you.

I live on a farm. 25 acres, and my nearest neighbor wouldn't hear me scream for help if I stood on my back deck and shrieked bloody murder. I have two dogs..one of which is a coon hound and he can BAY loud and nonstop. It drives me insane so if lets out more than a couple "aroooo!!!" then I bring him back inside. Nobody wants to hear that crap. Not me, and not the neighbors half mile away.

You need to post the link. We have several happy dogs next door. I’d put up your birdhouse in a heartbeat.
Other noises besides a particular dog barking can activate the "bird house" and hurt the dog's hearing. It is a shame the owner does not try to train his dog but I also would not knowingly hurt the dog. Also, it does not work for JUST ONE DOG. It could be causing other dogs unnecessary pain.

OP, i get your frustration but is it the dog's fault or the owner's? IMO, it is the owner's.

The DOGTEK Sonic Birdhouse emits an ultrasonic sound which is heard by dogs but is not detected by humans. The dog will stop barking when The DOGTEK Sonic Birdhouse emits it high-pitched, safe and effective tone. The dog will begin to associate their bark with this unpleasant noise.

It needs to work for more than just one dog. They have several. All small, all yappy. They won't train them and just keep getting more dogs. The other closest dogs are a few acres away and I doubt it reaches that far.

If a dog is left chained outside all day you should be reporting this to authorities. I pity the dog not the neighbours.

He’s wrong, disillusioned and a bad neighbor atop the fact that he just may be considered abusive to that dog. No Dog should be barking all day/night.
ur in an HOA home, put it in writing and let Them deal with it. He’ll get notified, fined and hopefully take care of the needs of his pet.
good luck. That’d drive me crazy !

I know things vary by state, but where I live, the HOA is absolutely powerless to enforce noise laws. That is up to the county or municipality. Our HOA does the nice thing to remind people to be good neighbors, but the HOA can't enforce anything that isn't in its covenants. Maybe your HOA does have a noise covenant but I have yet to live in one that does. Most things are about appearances.

I am not familiar with this birdhouse, so thanks @karen4546 for posting the info. I was able to look up additional info about it, too. I don’t see where it’s inhumane in any way - if anyone knows something to the contrary, please post it so we can all learn. So I don’t have a problem with the birdhouse and think it’s a good response to what the OP has to put up with, as far as I can tell. A constantly barking dog is a nuisance and disturber of the peace! Sadly, too, it’s not the dog’s fault.

I previously had a wonderful golden retriever, who barked once in his life, scared himself and never barked again. I now have a golden retriever puppy. He is ten months old and very, very vocal. Barks when he is hungry, barks when he wants to come in/out, barks when he thinks it is time to get up in the morning, barks at things that bother him, barks when he is just out on a walk and happy, barks at shadows, barks when he wants attention, barks if I am not putting my boots on quickly enough. We only had a couple of puppy training sessions because of lockdown, but this pup is walked and exercised for hours every day, has company (me) all day and is kept busy with appropriate dog toys etc. He doesn’t bark when he is left alone. I am slightly at a loss. Luckily, I live in the middle of nowhere, so he only disturbs me. I ignore him and don’t engage with him when he barks, but he doesn’t seem to be getting the message. If anyone has any ideas, please share. I understand him barking when he is anxious and distract him etc., or when he wants something, but he really seems to bark just to tell the world how happy he is!
