Am I the only one who travels without a smart phone and/or laptop?

All be it,
*psst* albeit

One thing I don't get is that this site, fundamentally, is dedicated to planning a Walt Disney World vacation to the microsecond ("Junior's third bathroom trip on day 5 will be at 3:44pm, which gives us 31 minutes to get to our Priority Seating at the Princess & Other Crap buffet experience, where we'll spend 3.14 minutes with Cinderella, 1.2 minutes with Belle, and DD5 will throw a tantrum at the Evil Queen for 9.3 minutes..."), and yet people still feel compelled to have internet access "JUST IN CASE!!!!!"

Criminy, just admit that you're addicted to your little toys, and can't function unless you have them with you. :lmao:

(cue: anecdotes)

Nope. We don;t even OWN a laptop or Smartphone.

oh good it's nice to know I'm not the only one. My cell phone stays in my car and I don't even know the phone number (I do have it written down in my wallet). We did just get an ipad and that was very excitting but I still don't feel the need for a laptop or a smartphone. I'm just not tech savy.

We bring the laptop, just to upload pictures, I do have a smartphone, but that is because I use it for work. When on vacation, my phone is with me and on, but I don't use it unless I get a call. Or to use the built-in GPS. We always get a rental car.:moped:

I work in IT. I am pretty much on a computer, or in meetings talking about computers, 10+ hours a day. I've done that for 25+ years of my life now, and to sum it up, I'm over the whole computer-umbical-cord thing :rotfl2: I refuse to get a smart phone, simply because I do not want to be attached to my email, etc. the few hours a day I actually have away from the computer - in fact, I have a need for the exact opposite: time to actually connect with my family and society.

When I go on vacation, I unplug almost completely because I need to to save my sanity! I do not take a laptop with me. My employer does have my cell phone number in case they have a problem and want to call me about it. But that's it - they have to call, not email, and there's not really much I can do to help them without a computer so they rarely even call :rotfl:

Right there with you! We used to bring the laptop to do homework (DH and I are both full time students) but we hated doing that, even, so we skipped it this last trip and played catch up when we got home).

We don't have smart phones...hate em, actually. I hate being tied to technology. So my phone, while in my purse, doesn't get used for much more than texting DH on vacation like "where are you???".

Just because someone brings their cell phone/smart phone on vacation doesn't mean they are addicted to a toy.

I am not 20 something ;) and I love technology and keep up with the latest gadgets. DH is really into technology and we have all the gadgets and I don't see this as a bad thing. Heck, his 83 year old grandmother has a cell phone and a laptop saying she loves it and wants to keep up with the times lol.

When we are on vacation I would never turn off my cell phone. There have been times when we were away and have had a death in the family we had to rush home for. I can't imagine not letting my family have a way to contact me in an emergency just because I was away. I don't have to answer it, I could let it go to voicemail and check it to make sure it's not an emergency but really my family doesn't bother us when we are away. DH and I go away without our kids sometimes and there is no way I would ever even think of not having direct, quick contact with them.

As for having the internet while on vacation, I like to stay connected and post pictures on Facebook for my family and friends. Also I use it to make reservations, get directions, check ride line times when we are at WDW. It's a really helpful tool when on vacation. I'm not glued to my phone 24/7 at home or on vacation. We usually bring our smart phones(iPhones) and either the iPad or our laptop, and my Kindle when we go away. I really don't see anything wrong with it.

Nope, we dont have a laptop and our phones are only phones, no texting, no pictures, nothing but actual conversation can take place on our phones :confused3 shocking I know. Its not that we cant afford all those toys, I just dont wanna be that connected to everyone. Those who matter will be with me on any trips.

Hubby and I went to Branns steakhouse this weekend for VDay and there were literally 20 TVs in the place.....you couldnt avoid looking at them, they were in your line of sight no matter where you sat. Then as Id look around just about every table someone was fiddling with a phone or nook/kindle. We wonder why our kids are ADD and require constant attention. Sorry its not for me.

I agree wholeheartedly with both bolded statements! We just got back from vacation with my friend and her family and she was staring at her phone ALL.THE.TIME! She had her kids and DH with her - who is more important than that?? It drove me nuts!

I agree 100% with this post. I have a smart phone and it goes everywhere I go. Why? Because I do things without my DBF, without my kids, and my family (except my DBF and 2 kids still at home) all live in another state. There is NO way I could not have a way for any of them to get in touch with me right away if needed. I too like to FB, get directions (I love the navigation on my phone, I'm so directionally challenged it's scary) and I check ride times as well. I am not glued to my phone either but it's a valuable tool that is used all the time.

Some of my favorite conversations have taken place on my cell phone via text......for me and my friends/family texting is as common as calling and the discussions are just as important and meaningful. My phone takes better photos than my camera and with my family living 600+ miles away it's great to take a photo of the kids with a character (yes, they both still like to meet the characters) and either pop it up on FB in seconds or text it their way, makes them feel like they are with us even tho they aren't.
I don't know about you but I can't take my parents and all my siblings and cousins with me on trips so I use technology to keep in touch. My Grandmother is elderly, she's important to me, if anything happens to her (or anyone else I love) I want to be contacted immediately.

FYI, even if someone is "playing with their phones/kindles/whateverss" that doesn't mean they aren't connected to the group they are with. DBF and I play Words With Friends (scrabble) together, we will sit on our couch and play against each other, it's the same thing as playing the board game but it's on our phone/iTouch. We had someone tell us to "stop messing with our phones and talk to each other" once, we were laughing so hard because at the time we were playing WwF and we had just finished a discussion regarding our upcoming vacation plans. It was just so out of left field and it was a stranger who had no idea what we were doing that we just busted out laughing. Also, if you are meeting others you may be receiving text messages that give you updates on where they are. People really shouldn't make judgements when they really don't know for sure what's going on.

In our home, we have 1 netbook, 1 laptop, 1 desktop, 1 smart phone (mine), 3 dumb phones and 2 iTouches. None of my children have ADD or need constant attention, in fact it's quite the opposite and we regularly receive comments on how well behaved our kids are when we are out and about.

I absolutely do agree that people do use technology to "babysit" their kids but it's not everyone, and people should not judge everyone based on what they see a few people doing.

OP as you can see, you're not the only one without a laptop or smartphone, I only made the smartphone choice a year ago myself.........if it's not for you, don't do it but if it is for others let that be their choice.

No smart phone, just a dumb one. I do text though. No lap top. No GPS, I still use maps. I make my kids read them too while we travel.

On my way back from South Carolina last year, I handed my son who was a few weeks shy of his 13th birthday, the road atlas and told him to map out our route home. Pretty easy because it was basically a straight shot up 95. Except I told him I needed him to find an alternative route once we hit Virginia. There was a lot of roadwork heading north on 95, and didn't feel like sitting in the traffic.

He planned the alternative, which I looked at and agreed to. Now, I knew his route would be longer than the alternative I would have picked, but I followed his route. He read the map, would tell me what road to take next etc... He was so proud of himself when we got home. I was even prouder!

It's reassuring to read a lot of people are not tied to their smartphones then. Like the OP, our family is "behind" in technology.

No smartphone - I refuse to pay $50 or $60 a month. My husband & I have a couple of Speakout pre-pay phones we keep with us for emergency. My DD just about had a meltdown when she found out I refused to let my brother gift her with an iPhone. :rotfl2: Ok, truth be told here - I would LOVE to have an iPhone! I hated saying no but it's just too damn much money!

My computer is a desktop. I swear I could not live without it. Or the internet. What can I say? I was BBS'ing back in the 80's. It has too much of a hold on me now! :lmao:

My husband has a laptop. I use to think I would like that, but the small keyboard drives me nuts. We bring that to Disney with us to load photos on and have movies/tv shows in case someone gets sick and ends up in the room for awhile.

My brother did gift me an iPad 2 for Christmas. I had not realized how much I would love it or how much fun it would be to use! :cloud9: It's replaced my Kobo e-reader. But even though I investigated the option of a 3G card, I have not purchased on. Yet... :rolleyes1 If I do, it will be a $5 monthly flex card as when I do want to connect to the internet, I can usually conect wirelessly.

Even though I use my iPad to read books here & there, I have to admit there's still something about holding a book. Can't imagine I will ever truly give that up. Especially not since I like to walk & read my way to school & back. :)

No GPS either.

My daughter has an iPod Touch, which I disabled wireless internet access from due to inappropriate utube viewing.

I used to be like you - no smart phone and I didn't travel with my laptop.

But I've got a smart phone now that I love and I've been traveling with my laptop which was really nice on my last trip to MN.

There was an ice storm and I spent way more time in my room than usual because of it and having my laptop was so much nicer than just having my kindle and smart phone. What's really funny is that when I went has been the worst week of winter where my parents live. Since then it's been pretty mild.

I don't know that I'll bring my laptop with me to Disney since I'm not in the room much but I definitely will to other destinations.

I don't have a smart phone (have a basic cell phone no texting, cant stand it) I do have a laptop but it stays at home when I am on VACATION!!!! to much being connected , I should stay home... I am on vacation and its time to check out of the real world and just relax. If I knew about things going on I think i would not have a real vacation

I too like to FB, get directions (I love the navigation on my phone, I'm so directionally challenged it's scary)
The reason you're so bad at navigation is most likely that you rely on your phone. The way that people build spacial maps in their brain is by observing their surroundings and learning the placement of things.

Getting directions from your phone short circuits that experience to "TURN LEFT" "TURN RIGHT" "GO THERE" which prevents you from actually building an internal map of where you are.

You could say that your phone is making you stupid, direction-wise.

Okay, I'll admit that I like my phone. I don't consider it to be a toy because regardless of all its bells and whistles, it is still primarily a phone to me. But being able to listen to my music at night, watch a movie in the airport, or even check attraction wait times is kind of nice.

I can function without all the "smart" features. But I'm paying for them anyway, so I see no reason to not use them when they make travel go smoothly and down times more pleasurable.

I'm another one who doesn't have a smartphone. I have a regular old dumb phone for emergencies. I do have a laptop but like a few others have said I use it to download and look at the photos I took for the day but I don't pay for the internet access while at Disney. It's nice to get away from it all and I can't do that if I'm connected.

No some people are just horrible with maps. Period.

My husband has never been good with them and that was proven long before GPS's and turn-by-turn apps ever entered our lives.

A nurse offered me her cell phone in the Emergency room of Celebration hospital. My 5 year old had been sent by ambulance there from the walk in clinic.
Our flights were leaving the next day, my out of country insurance was confusing, and I really really wanted to talk to my mom (a medical professional) about the CT scan, and the drugs he was getting.
The courtesy phone in the hall wouldn't dial international numbers and I didn't have a calling card.
We were really afraid, my child was in agony, and we were told we were being moved to a second hospital by ambulance who could help us better.

Until that point I had never owned a cell phone in my life. I work from home and really felt it wasn't necessary.
I bought one a month after getting home. And like I said it comes with us now and stays turned off. It is comforting to know it's there if I need it.

There ARE legitimate reasons to have a cell phone on vacation. Or to want to call home. While I don't think being tied to our devices would be what I'd want, I also did not like the feeling of having to rely on the kindness of a stranger for a situation I should have planned for. I felt really irresponsible.

I bring my iPhone only to use the Lines app which is quite helpful. I also brought my laptop last time, but not for internet use. I would put all of the photos I took on my computer so I could use my camera without it filling up since we were staying 8 days!

If it weren't for that app then I'd probably leave my phone.
