Am I ready to travel during hurricane season?

I read an interesting article yesterday by Tom Bricker over at Disney tourist blog. He covered how to prepare for a visit to WDW during storm (hurricane) season. What about Universal? Any tips or info on how they handle weather? Is there good communication with guests about closures and safety?

I'll be traveling Aug 26 to Sept 2 staying at CBBR. Our only offsite plans are one night at MK for MNSSHP.

Yes, there is excellent communication. I was there during hurricane Matthew last year.

When it's really raining, are ponchos allowed on all the rides? Any issues with something loose like that on the roller coasters?

When it was "really raining" (like can't see through the rain) when we were there, they weren't running the outside rides. You could ask the TM near the beginning of the ride, as they advise you what to put in lockers; however, you are allowed to wear a hat through the line and sit on it during the ride (they advise you to sit on loose flip flops as well); so I would assume if it's an issue, you'd just have to sit on it.

We have used that same week for a total of five times now. Never got caught in a hurricane. So your odds of a non-event are good.

If it does happen, the resorts are world-class at coping. Have your mind set properly for dealing with the unexpected change in your vacation by remaining calm and try to still have fun.

Agree that the odds are in your favor of not dealing with a hurricane. However, I was not impressed with how a certain Disney resort dealt with Hurricane Matthew last year when we were staying there. At all. The communication in the parks was good though for Disney and I'd presume Universal would be the same. Universal waited longer than Disney to say they were going to be closed but that's the only difference as for in the parks. (And Universal waited much longer to tell employees they didn't need to show up as a result since they called their closing later).

they told us at the gates first thing Thursday morning that they were closing at 5 and closed Friday. We missed our private RIP tour but had a lot of DIS friends in town and had a great time anyway. No problems on the refund either.

Surprised the gift shop wasn't selling "I served Matthew" tshirts @ $30 a pop

We had tix for Thursday via our multi-day. HHN tickets. GS permitted us to enjoy Saturday, which was absolutely d-e-a-d:hourglass probably because many changed their travel plans for the weekend. Nice as those weekend tix would cost much more

Matthew was an outlier, though, wasn't it, that it affected central Florida? My cousins in Daytona use Orlando as their fallback for a hurricane. (not that they used it...they REFUSED to evacuate despite being less than a mile from the ocean and just hunkered down with their children through the storm...which I am still NOT over them doing)

I'd say yes. We were there for Matthew. I felt everything was communicated just fine. We were at Disney but went to Universal on the Sunday after everything reopened. Though do realize, it's pretty rare for a Hurricane to move through central FL. Probably not going to have to worry about it

I was born and raised in FL. Honestly, your dates aren't really peak hurricane time nor is Central Fla traditionally in the cone so I wouldn't even give this much thought - although it is good to be prepared. If a hurricane comes, you will have at least 5 days to a week's worth of notice. Communication at Disney and Universal is wonderful. Don't spend too much energy worried about hurricanes!

I have had vacations that involved hurricanes three times
Been going yearly since 1994 so not a bad record hitting weather issues

UO does a good job to ensure guests have what is needed to deal with the weather

Twice I was there when hhn was shut down for a night

Not my favorite way to pass time sitting in the hotel but still doable

I wonder about fall vacations but pack what I might need if storms escalate

They didn't tell us they were closing at 5 until that afternoon while in Epcot. That was fine - I don't have an issue with that. What I did have an issue with was that I asked at my hotel what I needed to do to prepare and we were told to not worry about it, that they would let us know if there was anything we needed to do. I even asked specifically about food and was told I didn't need to do anything. That didn't sit right with me so I ignored it and did quickly pick up some food. They announced that we had to stay in our rooms at a certain time and could not leave. This was at POR so we couldn't walk to the lobby. They announced we could go buy overpriced food before then - which we bought a little of but they were already out of some items and completely out soon after we went through - so some people got nothing. (I wouldn't have bought any had I known as we had enough to get by on. I knew when they were out of all since there was a recording on our phone). They told us to stay in our rooms until they told us we could leave - which they didn't do. We left when the travel restriction was off of Orange County even though POR still wasn't telling us we could leave. For check-out, they didn't have enough people to check out - which is understandable since employees needed to go home too. But the generic Disney system was also overloaded and waiting an hour didn't get us through. (We finally gave up and didn't officially check out). There wasn't an automated check-out that we could do. I'm not sure why we weren't able to do that. My biggest complaint is that I was asking them specifically what we needed to do and they were telling us nothing. It wasn't just me they were telling this too, as there was a recording telling us that as well. They should have been telling people to get food ahead of time at an absolute minimum.

They also weren't helpful how long we could stay. We were supposed to check out the morning of the hurricane. When I asked them the day before if we could get a late check-out due to the storm, we were told no. It wasn't until Orange County's travel ban that we were allowed to check-out late. (Though, as mentioned, we weren't able to do the official check-out process due to not getting through on the phone and the line at the desk being out the door).

I didn't like how they acted like life goes on as usual in the Disney Bubble until the last possible moment.

We didn't deal with refunds but I do know others who did and that worked out well, though understandably, quite delayed. Our main issues were with how POR handled it specifically.

We were at USO. I don't do WDW.

That makes a difference! My husband was at USO that day. I don't think he was paying attention to park closing as he was working at F&F that day. They did wait quite a bit longer than Disney to call it for employees. But that doesn't impact guests' experiences.

My guess is they waited until a curfew was called for the area. I have no idea though why the delay to employees.

The only thing that I would add to all of this is that if a hurricane is expected to make any kind of impact to the Orlando area around the time you are either going to, or leaving via MCO, to make sure you get travel insurance. Looking at T.I. websites, you can get it within 24 of leaving for your vacation. So it's not exactly something you'd need to get now. You could wait and see what's going on then make that call literally at the last minute if needed.

As an Orlando native, hurricanes are infrequent events. I can remember Orlando getting a direct hit by a hurricane about every 10 years. Tropical storms are a bit more frequent. It's not something I would be too worried about. The local parks and hotels have storm plans and will take care of their guests. Also, weather forecasters can usually pick up storms about 5-7 days out, and narrow the path down by 72 hours out. So you'll have a few days' notice if something is likely to hit the area.
