Am I nuts to think of a short weekend trip?

Here's the deal, I am in the process of planning a long trip for either August or December. My DS turns 7 in May and he is a huge Star Wars fan. Plus, he just got a wonderful report card! I would love to take him for Star Wars weekend, just he and I. I looked on-line and can get a good deal on airfare from Boston. We would be arriving Friday, May 20 in the afternoon and returning mid-day on Monday, May 23. So this would give us Friday afternoon/evening and all day Saturday and Sunday. We would stay at Pop Century (DS's favorite) and I have 2 days left on old passes for me and 1 day for him. It would not cost much.

Am I crazy to do such a short trip? Or should I just stick with the long trip later in the year. I need opinions.

No, you're not crazy (at least not for this!). We're doing the same thing, the same weekend! My birthday is May 23. Because of my job, I work 7 days a week from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, so I don't go away in the summer. We're planning our annual DCL/WDW trip in November, but I need my Disney fix to charge my batteries for the summer.

We will arrive on Friday and leave Tuesday morning. We will be going to Epcot for one day (Monday) and the rest of the time we'll hang around and do "grown-up stuff" since we're two 50+ yr. old adults!

because us DISers will always encourage a Disney trip. But honestly, short weekend trips are fun. We do it from time to time. For a quick fix or a special occasion. Once I surprised my husband for our anniversary. We went down on a Friday and came back Sunday. RnR coaster was opening and it was a special preview weekend for passholders. I told my DH that we were going to see a friend of mine who kind of lives near the airport. Instead of going to see her, we went to the airport and flew to Disney. Stayed at CSR and had a blast.

Spur of the moment trips are sometimes the best.

DO IT.

Theres nothing crazy about it. If you can get a good deal, go for it.

I went for a weekend last year, and it was great. Going in May is also a great way to kick off the summer!
Your DS will remember it forever. You can be the spontaneous cool mom!

Heck no. Some of my best times at WDW have been on short trips. I'm going in May for 2 days with my DD2 - a girls' only trip - and I'm really looking forward to it.

We almost always do 2-4 day trips rather than longer ones (usually 2-3 days in the disney parks). It's great. You do have to give up a few things but you can almost always see everything you really want to.

I don't think thats crazy at all! We did the same thing this past November. (And with a little luck we will do it again towards the end of this year! ;) )

We're doing the exact same thing in May and we're coming from Alaska. Our friends and family thinks we've joined some kind of cult but we say that if we are taking the trouble to travel from Alaska we may as well tack on a trip to WDW! :cool1:

No, you are not crazy for doing a weekend trip! We've done those before and they are so much fun. With the cheap airfare from here, we just can't pass them up. We are going for another quick trip one week from tomorrow!

Enjoy! :wizard:

I think it's a wonderful idea! It sounds like it would be a magical trip for your 7 year old son. :goodvibes We just went in February (12 nights) and we already had our December trip planned (7 nights). And a week after we got back in Feb., we decided to take another trip for 5 nights in May! It'll be fun to go there right when the celebration is beginning. GO GO GO! :teeth:

I'm doing the same thing with my little DNeph (7) and we are really looking forward to it ! He's had a very rough year for a little guy and my sis has house guests coming the following week to get ready for - so we scheduled a Fri thru Mon trip for SWW - he travels alone with me a lot - especially since my own kids have grown up and can't travel or leave school as frequently !

We plan on spending most of our time at MGM to do all the SW stuff - and then just trying to see some of the new attractions/shows like Soarin' and Motors, Action (whatever it's called) - I have a few fun meals scheduled and plan on spending time every afternoon at the pool ! We are having fun re-watching a different old SW movie each weekend when he visits.

We have a longer trip scheduled in october, too, with more family along - but after many, many years of taking my kids on short, "one-on-one" trips I know just how magical and full of memories they are - hope you decide to go and Enjoy !!! :smooth:

We're going that weekend too, DH's bday is the 22nd, but we live here, so not the same thing....

Thanks for telling me I am not crazy. My family thinks I am nuts. I just needed some reassurance. I mentioned it to my DS last night and he was very excited about it. I told him this trip is for him and he can decide what we do since it will just be the 2 of us. He thought that was "way cool". He is already planning. We have to swim in all 3 pools at Pop Century, get tattoos and play in the arcade our first night!

Do it!!! Do it!!! You are normal! Not crazy!!! Everyone else is abnormal!! Not us! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

If you're crazy, then so am I! Two weeks ago when we got the last snow storm (I pray!) I booked Memorial Day Weekend to WDW- I couldn't take the weather anymore! We're flying down Sat 5/28 until Wed 6/1. I am also going with my sister's family for a longer trip in August from 8/18-8/27. My Ds7 and DH are also a Star Wars fans and I just want some Florida sun! We got POFQ for an AP rate of $104 and AF of $155 with AA. DH had miles so we just paid for the boys and I. We can't wait. This has been a long, terrible winter in the Northeast and I don't blame anyone for wanting to get away!

You are so not crazy...

I've gotten off work thursday night, drove 15 hours to WDW, had all day friday & saturday, and left sunday after lunch in DTD, driven home and dragged myself into work monday....That MIGHT be crazy...but to fly down friday and leave monday is soooo not :wizard: pixie dust to you, enjoy your trip

Chris

I'm doing an even shorter trip in Oct. Early Sat morning to Monday afternoon. I think it's def worth it, even though I wont be going to any parks, I'll just be laying by the pool with an ice cold drink!

Heres my little motto on that. Some Disney is a LOT better than no Disney.

Nope, you're not crazy at all. We're doing the same thing. Fly down on Fri. and back on Mon. I love long weekend trips to the Mouse.
