Am I getting old or is this horribly wrong?

I've taken one of those cardio "tease" classes with a bunch of forty-something girlfriends. We learned a lot of the same moves those girls do in their routine. I was so embarrassed to be there. What are these parents thinking??

Just saw a clip on the news of one set of parents. They find nothing wrong with the dance moves and say the costumes need to be like that to show body lines and movement. Give me a break. You can still be covered and show lines and movement. And pelvic thrusts are not good dance moves. Parents are idiots.

I just saw the still photo and no one can convince me that these little girls aren't aware that they're being sexy.

:rotfl:

The dad sounded so clueless in that video. Mom just sounded canned, like she was trying to make herself feel better and that we just don't understand the dance world.

I found it to disturbing to watch more than about half of it. For the costumes--it's not the amount of skin that's showing that bothers me. It's the fact that it's deliberately designed to look like a bustier and a garter belt. The red satiny material and the black lace add to that appearance and the thigh high stockings and fishnet arm coverings just put it over the top. A 7 yo should not be wearing lingerie.

I'm not a fan of girls of that age doing that kind of dance routine but when you add the costume, it just crosses the line and becomes incredibly inappropriate and difficult to watch, IMO. There's no way my daughter would have been participating at the age of 7.

Declansdad... I have to agree with you for once!!!! (GASP!!!) ;)

I see what you are saying...
I can see the bigger picture...
If parents such as these continue to make such bad parenting decisions, and have the "Hey, it's okay... whatever..." attitude....

Yes, I can see how that bodes for some problems/risks in these kid's futures.

It only stands to reason.

It is not just that if the kids do a dance routine or wear these costumes then they will be getting what they ask for... (that would be a skewed viewpoint) but, when discussing the bigger picture, and this type of parenting... I have to agree!!!

I think people/parents are fooling themselves if they think kids that age don't understand sexuality. They might not "get" what it's about and might not have it right, but we are all sexual beings from birth.

It's sick that they're being encouraged and TAUGHT to express themselves that way by grown adults who should know better.

Just forget it- those of us who are disgusted by the video are not pedophiles- but thanks for the insinuation.

That is not what I said or what I meant but good job on twisting my words into an insult.

I came back to edit this, because I thought there might be a better way to say what I meant. I (and others) see a particular move that the girls are doing as a "dance move", others see it as a "sexual move". I see the outfit as a dance costume, others see it as lingerie. Not sure that makes one of wrong or right, just seeing it differently. And it certainly doesn't mean that I am a bad parent or blind and it doesn't mean the other person is a pervert. It's just two different ways to look at something.

I think the implications that these girls are going to end up being strippers or street walkers is horribly unfair and wrong. There are many children that will, sadly, take a wrong road in their life. Luckily, the ones that have the greatest chance are the ones that are involved in something like dance.

Again, if not for youtube this wouldn't even be an issue. It would not have made national news and we wouldn't be discussing it unless a diser's child was doing the dancing.

I didn't see the parents interviewed. (was that on another network, not GMA???) But, I did she the routine, in all it's glory, on my big-screen.
:scared:
Sorry, but anybody who can say that those moves are not 'adult' or 'suggestive', or'sexualized'.... At one point I saw straightened spread-straddle legs, with a deep bend forward from the hip What, is this 'okay' because of the side-angle... does the fact that it wasn't the backside facing the audience make this okay.

Since when are Thigh-Hi stockings, adult 'sexy' undies, 'appropriate' for young girls.

And, anybody who can say that, hey, that's just the way it is...:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Yep, it's just the way it is in third world countries to marry off a child not much older than this age... or to sell ones children off into human-trafficking, child pornography... Doesn't make it right...:mad::mad::mad:

These girls are EIGHT for god's sake.

That's my beef with it too. What kind of message are we sending to young girls with suff like this?? To be 'sexy' is a great way to get attention? Girls are bombarded with that message at younger and younger ages. It frightens me for the future.

There is no doubt that these little girls have talent, but right now lack a great deal of actual technique. If they continue training, they will be amazing dancers.

I went back and watched the "dance routine". Aside from it being far too sexual for their age, it's not a good routine. It's far too fast for them and they are too rushed from move to move to make it look polished.

I still haven't read or heard anything about how they placed in the competition....

I am a former competition dancer, and mom to a DD6 who has been dancing for 3 years. I found the costumes to be way to riminiscent of undies, and some of the moves to be too blatantly sexual for my taste, but I also noticed what you were talking about. Many of the moves were way too fast and it looked rushed. I also noticed a lack of connecting skills. They threw one big, impressive skill after another, but the connecting work was sloppy. We called these "flash in the pan" routines. Lots of flashy tricks, but no solid foundation. No question these girls have massive amounts of talent, but it doesn't look like anyone has taught them a solid foundaiton of basic technique to go with that. We are at a studio that does not compete. To quote the director "I am not willing to put your children in the position of wearing costumes and doing routines I don't think are age approiate. Unfortunately, that is what it takes to be competitive at major dance cometitions, so we don't compete."

I don't think they know what sexy is at 8. Have they heard the word, sure, but that doesn't mean they understand the concept.

The picture is some young girls imitating what they have seen others do.

LOL, I think that is twice in two years.

I have a question. Miley Cyrus is 17. Practically an adult, and for all intents and purposes, she is. So what are your thoughts on the Can't Be Tamed video? There are a lot in an uproar right now. Is it offensive to you?

Maybe she should have waited until she was 18 but to me this isn't the same thing at all. Miley is clearly trying to break out of the teeny bopper mode and is almost an adult. These little girls have a long way to go yet.

With all due respect, declansdad, you are dead wrong.

They sure as heck know what sexy is at 8. They may not know where babies come from, but they understand that posing that way feels differently (sexy) than if they were playing ring around the rosie. I was a little girl once, I have sisters, we were a modest family, but I can tell you that when you put skimpy clothes on little girls, have them watch adult women thrust their hips and gyrate in videos, and teach them to do the same, their inate sexuality is brought to the surface. It's a psychological fact, and something I've seen in my own life.

This is a perfect example of why the parents should have stepped in and told the teacher to tone down the routine or pull their child from the competition. The little girls may not know what "sexy" is, but their parents do.
