Am I getting old or is this horribly wrong?

Hmmm....what is the right age for objectifying yourself as a sex object? :confused3

Call me Granny b/c I don't think this behavior is appropriate at any age, unless you work in a strip club ;)

AMEN!

Guess they've got their first job lined up already - I'm sure MIley Cyrus would lend them her pole....

But that is what they were doing, the dance BEYONCE did! And boy, did they do it... dead on! Now THAT is talent! I agree, they could have had more clothes on. But like another poster said, it wasn't the child molester convention (although, introducing the video to YouTube, well... :headache:)... it was kids dancing to a routine.

I am not saying the children aren't talented. I'm saying that whoever let them dance like that and in those costumes in front of all those people should be ashamed of themselves. With guardians/parents with judgement like that I shudder to think what the kids will be doing in a few short years. And I guarantee you- there was more than one pervert in that audience who was clapping for all the wrong reasons.

That's what I see for the most part. Except for the inappropriate costumes, I am not seeing much in the way of "sexual" there. They're just more talented Arriana's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CU2JhYM8tY

I hate to break it to you, but kids who have parents who DON'T let them dance like that are JUST as likely to do the same "bad things" you are thinking of when THEY are teenagers.

It's not sexual to those little girls. To them, they are dancing and having fun and BEING Beyonce. I'd rather my little girl want to emulate Beyonce than Lady Gaga or Pam Anderson (she dances now, too...) or any other number of crazy singers/dancers.

My dd does dance competitions and, sadly, I see this way too often. It didn't even shock me...I must be desensitized. Even worse is that I'm sure they were rewarded with a platinum....or double platinum, if the competition has that....award for their effort. Yes, they are good dancers but the skills that they are doing are not out of the ordinary for that age competition dancer.

As for the parents, they've just gotten swept up in it all. You see it in Cheer parents letting their children do outrageously dangerous stunts or Pageant Mama's tarting their babies up with makeup and false teeth. No difference IMHO. It's all Wrong, Wrong, Wrong and parents need to step back and let their children be children.

I am thankful every day for our wonderful dance studio that values age appropriate costuming and choreography over scores and awards.

Somehow I got on a kick of watching dance competition videos awhile back. If I remember while reading comments on a dance video, the costumes are chosen so far in advance....so boo to the adult teacher who picked them out.

The costumes were the only thing I found offensive. Like a PP said, there was a little shimmy here and there....nothing more than I've seen 5 year olds emulate of "Toddlers and Tiaras"/beauty padgents.

Anyway, go to YouTube and type in Southern Strut and watch some of that dance school's competition videos. A little more age appropriate in choices and awesome dancers.......

HOLY MOLY! :scared:

Those girls are INCREDIBLE dancers; they really should've had a little more appropriate material, FOR SURE! :sad2:

And I thank the good lord the not only would neither our studio owner or teachers even allow a routine to be put together for girls of such a young age, neither would allow the older girls 13+ throw that many bump, grinds, and shakes go on in their dance. The older girls get a few in, but it is not the majority of the moves. There are so many more hip-hop moves that they could do.

That being said......go back and actually WATCH the dance. Those kids have some serious talent! Some of the technique is extremely advanced for that age child.....I was VERY impressed with these girls. And on top of the talent there was some awesome stage presence as well. Too bad it wasn't directed in a more age appropriate fashion for their routine but hopefully it was a one-off bad judgement call. Can you imagine how extaordinary they will be at 17 if they can dance like that at 7?!?!

I will agree....holy cow did they have some good jazz and ballet techniques, but the over done hip-hop moves took what could have been a good routine and turned into a example of what not to do.

While they did a FEW moves from Beyonce, they did not do the routine as done in her video. If they had done the video routine to a T, with different outfits, I could see a lot of us having different stance on the routine. There are several of us with DD's that dance and I would render a good guess, that if our DD's came home and showed us what was being put together for them to dance, we would have all kinds of issues with our teachers, studio and studio owners. There are lots of competitions that would not ALLOW kids of this age to dance and place for ranking, as it contains steps that are not age appropriate.

You don't need to "break" anything to me- I have a 20 year old daughter- already been through the teens. I guess if you want to raise your daughter thinking it's okay to hip thrust and shimmy in lingerie at 8 years old, have at it.

I was thinking more in the lines of a pole.

Exactly.

Yeah, I already said that I didn't agree with the outfits. ;) I still wish I could dance like that, though! :rotfl:

They are amazingly talented, but really? really? what is the need? I don't get why we have such a need or want to have our kids grow up so fast.

Just brings me back to ... "just because you can, doesn't mean you should"... Im sad for them. And the more attention they get for acting/dancing this way, the cooler they think it is, the more they do it....

Yeah, I already said that I didn't agree with the outfits. ;) I still wish I could dance like that, though! :rotfl:

I'm sure my husband would love for me to dance like that too.

Is anyone reminded of the movie Little Miss Sunshine?

Well, me too. Although I just got this new hip 5 months ago so I wouldn't want to test it that severely yet.:rolleyes1

Dancing didn't bother me and I have a DD that age, I just think the shirts were too tiny (short). I didn't find it risque - they were basically copying the Beyonce video.

I don't find it so horrible. The outfits are 2 piece boy shorts and thats not unusual for a dance routine. Would I want my dd walking around school like that, heck no but its not so bad or uncommon when being worn for a dance competition. As far as the dancing, there really are only a few moves toward the end that are way too mature for girls of that age.
