Am I being unreasonable?

I dont think you are being unreasonable at all. I would be totally PO'd.

IF you had not made plans that would be different because it wasn't your actual birthday. From the sounds of it he remembered before he even told you about the charity ball that he already had plans with you, but didn't want to decline the invite.

Being a man is no excuse for forgetting you had plans. DH would never forget we had plans. He is actually better at remembering dates and times than I am.

hmm, count me in with the folks wondering why he wants to even go to a charity ball without you....when it's not a networking/required work thing....anyone special at his workplace who also might be attending?

If you had plans to go away for the weekend and he wants to back out for a charity ball without you....yes, I would be ticked off/sad/let down/disappointed. All of that.

But I would certainly tell him to go, because I wouldn't want to have to force him to choose a weekend away with his wonderful girlfriend who he loves (he does, right?) just to go to a charity ball for work. I think you know where you stand in his priorities...and I would let him know you know that. How long have you been together? Does he plan things together with you often, or do you do all the planning? I would be evaluating that in my mind as well.

Not meaning to sound harsh, but that is just what would be going through my head if it were me.

don't offer more info than needed. People at work may not think much of birthdays and celebrations. Just say your time is already scheduled and it can not be changed.

If you worked with my DS and this occurred at your office while working with my DS...then YOU would have BY now already KNOWN that DS' DGF's name is Diana...(do you understand where I am going with this)...yup DS speaks of her so much...those working closely with him probably FIRST would say to my DS..."Do you have any plans with Diana on the weekend of such and such, there is a Charity Ball scheduled and would you like to attend?"

Make sense...does to me...!!!
