I was supposed to go to Disney this June because I will be graduating this may, but my mom just had surgery and she doesn't think she is going to have the time to go over to Disney this summer to celebrate my graduation. I am feeling kind of upset over this. Also, I have to move into my college on my 18th birthday! that makes me REALLY upset. I don't get to spend it with my mom because they have this stupid ceremony for symbolic reasons of like independence or something, but basically after that ceremony I'm not allowed to see my mom for the rest of the day, BUT IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!!! So first I don't get a graduation present and now I don't get a proper Birthday, I really don't like growing up. But anyway, do you think I am being selfish? (P.s. this was kind of a rant, sorry)

I'm going to be honest; if you want to spend the day with your mom rather than attending the really, really stupid ceremonies that colleges have new freshman attend, then so be it. Like you said, it's YOUR BIRTHDAY. I don't think you're being selfish by wanting to spend your birthday with your mom instead of being with a large group of people you don't know, doing stupid exercises to introduce you to a group of people that don't want to be there either.

I can totally understand how you feel; My only wish for graduation was that my papa would be there to see me walk, but he was in real bad shape (he had pancreatic cancer), so he wasn't able to attend. I asked my cousin Mary to film it for papa, and...she didn't. I'm not one for violence, but I almost kicked the crap out of her for that. Then, 10 days before my 18th birthday, my papa died. I was on a plane at 3 in the morning on my birthday coming home from burying him, and that morning I got a call from my job saying I was fired.

18th birthdays suck :\.

I think that u should be with your mother. there will be other times when you can meet your classmates. the college can deal with it.

Umm... no. You should be able to see your mom if you want to. I really don't think they are allowed to keep you away from your mom if you disagree with their actions of doing so. And if they tell you you can't see her. Then just leave. Just go to what you need to, then go see her... she's your family.
Thats what I'd do...
But maybe we're both selfish if seeing your mom is wrong. But I know that I'm not the only one who thinks you should be able to see your mom... I know a ton of people who would probably agree with me.

thats not selfish at all. youre allowed to have these feelings and not have them be called something so negative. anyone would be disappointed about the disney trip; the way you act about it is what makes the difference--im sure youre not yelling at your mom for needing surgery, or guilting her about it. it would be selfish if you were, but i dont think youre that kind of person. same with the ceremony--its all in the way you react.

It's not selfish, you're allowed to be sad because of missing Disney. And you're definitely allowed to be upset over college telling you you basically couldn't see your mom. She's your mom. And you'll be an adult (right?). They cannot tell you what to do.
