Fast pass is free for all park guests.
Find the fast pass distribution area which is almost always near the entrance of the ride. Observe the times posted above for when to come back and use your fast pass. Insert your park admission ticket into the fast pass machine. The fast pass will come out. Be suere to get back your park admission ticket that will come out a different slot.
You can go have lunch, sit down and relax, or ride something else while waiting for your fast pass to mature.
Do realize that all those people walking past you in "the quicker line" did not just get there at the same time you did. They had been to the fast pass machine some time ago and are now coming back to ride when their fast passes said they could come back.

Next time when you visit the parks, if you see something you might like (or not like) but don't understand it , ask around. Each park has a "guest relations" booth not too far from the turnstiles inside and also a booth outside the turnstiles, if park staff near you doesn't know the answer to your question.
