Alternatives to professional gown steaming?

Wow I was just reading another post on gown steaming. I didn't realize it was around $80. I was going to have my dress and all my bridesmaid dresses done but now wondering if there is another way to save money.

Has anyone steamed their gown on their own? How did you do it? Were you pleased with the results?

Just to give you a price range, the extra dresses were $20 a piece from Carolyn Allen's.

I have read hanging your dress in the bathroom and running the shower hot as to get steam works, but I tried it with a costume I had, and it didn't do much at all to help. Could be the material however.

My SIL steaed my gown. I bought a regular everyday steamer (by Sunbeam I think*), and it worked just fine. I would practice on a shawl before trying it on your dress to see how it works. It was much cheaper to ahve her steam my dress than to pay someone to do it.

Before you try steaming your own dress make sure that the fabric can be steamed. I had Carolyn Allen's booked to steam my dress, but when the woman got there she said that since it was silk that it had to be pressed. You can't use water on silk, so make sure you won't ruin your dress.

You spent a lot on you're dress I'm sure. What's another $80 to guarantee that it looks fabulous?? Just have the bridesmaids steam or iron their own dresses. I've been in a bunch of weddings and I've never had a bride pay for my dress to be steamed.
