Alternative to pin lanyards

My parents have decided to maybe make Disney an annual thing after going the past two years, and during this past trip my mom decided to try to get my brother, 14 who has Down Syndrome, into pin trading. He really liked the pins and picked out a few, but he wouldn't wear the lanyard. He said it was too hot and kept taking it off. I was wondering if any of you have any alternatives to what we can put the pins or lanyard on for next time? My parents use a wheelchair for him at the parks, in case there's anything that might work to stick on that.

Thanks :)

My boys (7,9 & 11) complain about the lanyard too. Last year DS9 got a really neat hat at the Animal Kingdom. Kind of like a fishing hat, floppy brim the whole way around and a 1 inch band around base before the brim area. Nice because the pins can go on the band and the backs of the pins aren't on the actual inside of the hat. I wish I could draw a picture, my discription doesn't sound too good. Any way try a hat - it also serves the purpose of shading the head.

That would be a great idea, except I should have mentioned he also rarely keeps a hat on his head for more than a minute :\ Thanks anyway!

Does he have his own wheelchair, or do they rent one for him?

Some people who have lots of pins use pin books. They have pages made of cloth that the pins can be attached thru.

Unfortunately they rent until my parents decide to get one of his own. I have never heard of pin books though, where can you get them?

This works well for strollers, wheelchairs or on your pants. Get one of those kitchen towels that you can fasten on to your cupboard door handle, some of them button or velcro shut, sometime you see them at craft shows and people crochet a tab to the top. They work well as you can fasten them to the handle or to your belt loop.

You can get the pins bags in big or little sizes. They zip up so you have a harder time losing them. My son has disabilities and doesn't like the lanyard around his neck. He loves to proudly show off his bag! The large bag looks like a soft side briefcase and the small bag looks like a zipped up cd case!

You can hang the bag on the wheelchair!

The pin books are great - disney sells some or you can probably make your own in a binder and then fabric that is three hole punched. My boys lanyards were weighing them down this past trip and got hot real fast with the strap around there neck.

Disney also sells a light weight vest that pins can go on. I have seen it at several stores but it is fairly expensive at $48. It has a lot of pockets that velcro like a photo vest but very much lighter weight.

Disney also sells a pin holder that goes around the waist like a fanny pack. I use that as the lanyards bother my necks because of my fibromyalgia. Works nicely. I'm going to make one to go on the arm of my wheelchair.

He will need something that he can use to hand pins to CMs. You could use something on the wheelchair to display his collection but make sure you do not leave it setting there unattended. People have been known to steal books, lanyards, and other pin stuff. Kids will walk up and play with the unattended items also.

Buy online junk pins and keep them in a zip loc bag. Pin books that are small are easiest to store in a purse and allows him to have one keepsake book that he does not want to loose and one for trading and showing off.

Shadowboxes are neat ways to show off pins. You could use a map, brochure, t-shirt and more to make a memorobilia box. Pin trading vests are cute and fun but not good for rides. Overactivity can lead to pins falling off. You could let him wear it for a while then hang it over the back of the wheelchair.

The pin bags and pin fanny packs are really nice.:)
