altering last night's dye job?

I feel the need to jump in here...I'm a hairdresser and I well tell you that if the color you have now is something you can live with..keep it. Only because if you really mess it up it cost double, triple or more for a professional to do corrective work. If you feel confident in adding low lights to it then go ahead...you don't need to wait any length of time. I would use a semi perm color though. Also...do not use any color with henna in it! Henna stains the hair horribly and there is nothing you can do to get it out without completely frying your hair.

The way to get a specific color is to take a photo to the colorist and pay to have it professionally done. Even then, it might not be right. Drugstore box colors will vary a lot from brand to brand off what is pictured on the box, and vary more based off what your hair is like and how long you leave it in. An experienced colorist will be able to get closer - but it isn't cheap. A dye job like the one in the photo is probably three layers of color and glaze, and from an experienced colorist, depending on the part of the country and the salon, could be around $200+

Or learn how colors and peroxides work.

No one should ever be buying a box, ever. Not with the internet, and places like Sally's available to all.

I understand that not everyone can afford to pay salon prices, so then educate yourself and don't do impulsive box purchases.

The formulation of such is rather simple, and isn't rocket science.

I'm going to copy and paste something I posted in 2008, regarding hair color. I was able to Google and find it. Cool.

i wanted to add - if you (or anyone) does this again, GO TO SALLYS!!! Box color is made very generically for virgin hair. Its not as custom as doing it yourself.

For instance, for you - if you went to Sally's picked a color you like...and do not want it to lift - you'd get a 10 volume.

I think I posted this before:

10 vol = deposit/1 shade of lift
20 vol = 2/3 shades of lift
30 vol = 3/4 shades of lift
40 vol = 4/5 shades of lift (highest you can go)

If your hair is naturally medium brown - youre probably a level 5-ish.

So - if you picked out a color that was a level 5 (or even 6) with a 10 volume peroxide - all youre going to be doing is depositing color - which is *what you want!!!* when youre covering grey.

AND

If you went to Sally's - all professional hair color is numbered the same.

Levels (1-10)
N - Neutral
G - Gold
R - Red
etc, etc...

You'd find the level and tone you want - and go from there.

A level 5G - at Sally's is going to be a Level 5G Matrix.

Been there, done that! Turned my hair orange by using an brown/auburn dye. I shampooed a lot the first week which faded it quite a bit. Then I recolored with a dark brown. I didn't love the color I ended up with, but it was something I could live with. And I learned that any hair color with auburn in the description is not for me! :lmao:

Thank you EVERYONE. The color has really lessened, subsided and I can live with it now. Until the next time, eeks! LOL

So CathrynRose, can you please explain the above a bit more? Maybe its just me but I really don't get what you're saying. And I'd like to give Sally's a try.
TIA!
