Alright...I think I've lost it...GERMS!!!

Here's my germy pet peeve:

At Mass on Sundays, when you have the sign of peace and you have to turn to your neighbor (front, back, left, right) and shake hands. It makes me crazy when I know that the person next to me has been sneezing or coughing into their right hand all during the service:eek: And, there's really no polite way NOT to shake their hand. I've actually taken to bringing a pocket sized bottle of Purell in my purse so I can get rid of their germs! At the very least, I try not to touch my eyes or nose until I can wash my hands.

I don't like the fact that you shake hands with all these people in church (you don't even know if they're sick or not) then you have communion when host is placed in your hands and then you bring your hand up to your mouth:crazy2: A guy I knew got up every mass after shaking hands and washed his hands in the bathroom!
I don't drink the wine at communion but I watch each person drink from the cup and they so carefully wipe the cup with a plain cloth inbetween people like they think it's going to erase the other person's germs.

The funny thing is that we use all these antibacterial gels and wipes but the majority of the time it is a virus that causes us to get sick. Do these products kill viruses?

Actually, I consider that's the sanitary way to accept. You're other choice is the traditional "on the tongue" method, where the minister's fingers get inside your mouth. Now that i don't do. I'll take it in my hands because the palm where the host is placed is not going into my mouth. Besides, our fingers used to et inside our mouths as babies all the time anyway, so why be afraid of your own fingers now that you're grown up.

As far as the purell habit a lot of you seem to have, be very careful. We used this stuff and its soap in a convenience store i worked in b4 i got married. I wound up horribly allergic to it and now i don't wash my hands in a lot of public restrooms because they use the same or similar soap. This stuff used to make my skin so red and splotchy, that it looked like i should be in a burn center. I actually had to bring my own soap to work.

GERMS ARE GOOD FOR YOU!! Being exposed is how you wind up building immunity. Using anti-bacterial crap is how you up with staph infections because your body never encountered the germs b4.

Absolutely whole heartedly agree with this!

I can't be bothered to think about germs everytime I go out to eat or go on vacation. That's just too much thinking. All these people who put remote controls in plastic or lysol down their hotel room - uh - how bout lysoling down the plane, airport, baggage claim, rental car, front desk of the resort/hotel, elevators, stair rails, rides, restaurant chairs, tables? :teeth:

Yes, putting communion in your own mouth is better than the priest doing it. The problem I have is that I have touched everyone's hand before I eat it. Isn't that how germs are spread? Someone is sick, touches their mouth/nose, then shakes your hand. Now you have their germs on your hand when you get communion and then you bring your hands up to your mouth.

I just read an article somewhere that said the item in a hotel room with the most germs on it is the remote- it even tested positive for fecal matter.

nkjzmom, you and I think alike. A chemist who works in the food industry lives next door. He's always fussing at me about all the scrubbing and cleaning I do with bleach and antibacterials. He preaches that all of us, not just me, should use regular soap and water (already mentioned by a poster) to allow our bodies to build up their own immunities. I have relaxed somewhat, but I won't touch anything in my home after a shopping trip till my hands have been washed. And I NEVER put food into my mouth till hands are washed.

Too funny, that is me, I ALWAYS wash my hands after a shopping trip, always hold my breath when passing someone who is coughing and sneezing. Have my kids wash their hands immediately after school although they don't wash them in school before lunch and DD didn't miss a day of school last year.
Although I haven't read all the replies yet, I just had to comment on these 2 things, when we go out to dinner, after being seated and after the food comes, my kids put out their hands for the Purell (I'm so proud of them LOL)
I was telling my DH this morning that the girl at work was yelling at me saying I am choking her to death (with the spray cleaner)when I was cleaning my desk yesterday, my DH's response to me was, why were you cleaning your desk? Who touched it? ROTFL
Well back to reading the rest of the responses.
