ALOHA! The Polynesian Resort Information Thread: October 2013

You bring up a good point and it was something we debated back and forth before we made our decision to stay CL at the Poly under the magical deal.

For us, it came down to two things: bottomline numbers and guaranteed location.

For our family, the difference between the two offers came to CL being $162 more per night over the std vw. BUT, once I started adding up costs for daily breakfast items, drinks, snacks, etc. that gap quickly started shrinking. That combined with knowing that room requests are never guaranteed and we could end up with a parking lot view (which I never book when staying deluxe, deal or no deal) the decision to go CL was an easy one for us.

Our analysis is similar. We've spent between $80 extra/night to $150 extra/night for CL at various resorts. We're a family of five with three boys (ages 15, 14 and 7.) Our boys eat a lot and wake up at different times in the morning. So my husband and youngest son can eat at 7am, our teens usually wander in around 7:30 or 8 and then I grab some coffee before we leave for the parks. Makes mornings 100% easier and more relaxed then getting everyone up and out at once - even for a CS breakfast. And we used to have stuff in the room for breakfast before we started staying CL, but that's far more crowded for a family of five and just a less pleasant way to eat breakfast. And the cost of a CS breakfast for our family is between $40 and $50, especially because my crew tends to over-order.

CL gives us some extra space and a place for the older boys to hang out in the late afternoon (when our 7-year-old needs some down time.) It's nice not to have to continue paying $3 per soda or lemonade. The evening appetizers - these are a huge value for us. First, it allows us some quiet time before dinner, which is always around 7pm or 7:30pm for us. When we leave for our ADR, the kids aren't starving (and our 15 year old can keep eating at dinner, so I will no longer suggest that we save any $$ on his dinner order.) And the snacks are generally healthy, with a great selection of veggies, cheese, crackers, hot appetizers, fruit, etc. So if our youngest falls asleep at our ADR, he won't wake up hungry. And if I have two glasses of wine and my husband has one, that's $30 in Disney prices. Our family really enjoys appetizers and drinks before dinner, and the cost of all that at Tambu or Territory Lounge can be $60-$70 for us.

My husband and I often have a mini-date in the lounge when the kids are settled in the room at night with their desserts. And we don't get requests for dessert purchases because they know there will be something in the lounge. The desserts are tiny, but that's all they want anyway - the huge dessert portions in Disney restaurants are too much for us anyway. Again, for a family of five, that's additional savings.

As mentioned, CL at Poly guarantees location, which is great. And the lounge for fireworks and the EWP is a very nice benefit. During construction, we think CL is even more important so that we can reduce our reliance on other areas of the resort. Lots of other non-tangibles, but these are the numbers for our family. As long as our kids are traveling with us, the extra $80-$150/night is well worth it.

I got back yesterday from my nine-day visit. And I'd dreamt about staying here for a long time, and I really wanted to be thrilled with the place. And it was a great place to stay overall, but there are definitely a few things you should know. And now I'll share what I've learned from my experience this past week, none of which has anything to do with the construction going on:

1. The 1800/2800 wing of Rarotonga is closest to the monorail stop. If you want convenience, ask for a room there. We got one out of sheer coincidence and it was great, due to having a disabled person in the party.

2. In reference above, wheelchairs are given out free of charge to the guests. However, the chairs are not great quality...uncomfortable handles for the pusher (cramped and sore after about an hour of pushing), don't roll well, and the brakes didn't always work. We ended up renting an ECV from the parks instead after 2 days of that.

3. This is truly the "low end" of the deluxe resorts. They don't provide services that the other two deluxe resorts do. Contemporary and Floridian will deliver purchases directly to your room, but you need to pick up gift delivery from the Boutiki at the Polynesian, and they are only open between the hours of 7am-11pm. Also, there is no postal delivery service located at the Polynesian, so if you want to send something back home by mail, you have to travel to one of the other two deluxe resorts.

4. This resort is at the tail end of the bus stops, no matter which direction you are traveling. I'm honestly not sure how that works, but the park buses not served by the monorail stop at other resorts first before coming to the Polynesian, which means the buses can already be crowded by the time they stop here. Further, the Polynesian is not the first stop for any of the transportation back from the parks. Boats and buses leaving the parks stop at the other resorts first before finally going to the Polynesian, so you'll be the last one off.

So keep all that in mind before you book a stay here. Yes, it's a lot more convenient than the other resorts, but it's the least convenient of the deluxes.

I’m sorry to hear about the condition of the wheel chairs. Unfortunately it is up to Disney as a whole to supply the wheel chairs that the resorts get and I don’t believe they are any different at any other resort.

All Deluxe resorts for many years now stopped delivering park purchases to the rooms years ago. They have to be picked up at the resort gift shop and in the case of club level, picked up at the concierge for the club level.

As for transportation I don’t know of any form of transportation that the Polynesian is last except dropping off from the boat to the MK. For the monorail to the MK the Polynesian is second and the GF is last. For the busses to AK and Hollywood studios the GF is last to be dropped off and it changes as to where the bus comes from first. Sometimes it is the WL and sometimes the Contemporary. For the monorail from Epcot you can walk to the Polynesian or get on the resort monorail and go right to the Polynesian first. It is the only resort you can walk directly to the TTC and you can even access the large ferry so I think it is far from the worst transportation.

I do recall this [currently] being the situation... here's a recent shot of AK's Bus Information... notice stop #2:

The advantage the Polynesian has though... is walking distance to the TTA to provide another bus option when traveling to/from non-monorail parks. Because of that location and access... the Polynesian is actually ranked as the most convenient of any resort:

http://**************.net/planning-...on-convenience/resorts-ranked-by-convenience/

I'm also aware, that depending on the mobility issues of a travel party, walking to the TTC for those options can be more of a burden than advantage... and depending on your schedule... walking onto a bus with limited seating or having to wait for a seperate resort after a long day in the parks... is less than 'magical'.

For me... 'growing up' at Caribbean Beach with it's 7, SEVEN, bus stops has kept me 'humble' with my bus sharing expectations.

Hopefully you'll have better luck on future trips! The Contemporary definitely seems like a better 'bus' option...

My Cl visit in May and again this month I was able to book on Orbitz ,Disney 30% with additional 20% off. Then Orbitz gives me "credits" each time I book to use on my next visit.

Both trips were only $90 a night more for CL:cheer2:

WOW! Love those big discounts! To me that makes the Poly stay just great. CL or standard.
In response to other posters about the value of CL.
As long as you are savvy and have the family in tow it certainly can make sense for all the reasons posted above. And as Tikiman pointed out garden rooms are now facing the beach. All in all when you know what you like it makes for a more logical decision. All the points above make tons of sense and I hope everyone has the best time at the Poly, CL or not!
Thanks everyone for your input.
Boy this 'resorts' forum is a lot more pleasant than the "parks and attractions" one. They would've jumped on me there for saying my piece!

My above post has me confused now... hah!

Can you still take buses to/from the TTC? After writing that... and seeing the picture with no TTC stop... I feel like I read somewhere (recently) that transportation between parks was now 'door to door'?

Can anyone offer insight on what transportation options are available at the TTC besides monorails to MK and Epcot?

I hope that you will have great time and this is not meant to be a downer….but I find it hard to justify $200 plus more bucks for some or'derves and some oatmeal. The garden view room is the exact same room as all the others in fact you can get a great king room in Fiji facing a beach and the water and with the $200 plus you save you can eat breakfast lunch and dinner….or eat an amazing meal at California grill every night. And next August you can get the Poly standard view for $220 total….
Just a thought. A beer is a beer. And garden view isn't Theme Park view.
I hope you don't think I am spoiling your fun.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing. I think CL is good to grab a little breakfast in the morning, rather than spend $30 bucks on a QS croissant or egg platter, however I couldn't see myself leaving the parks to come back for some or'derves back at the hotel. I'd rather save the money and use it for a nice signature dinner.

Apparently the 20% isn't eligable for Disney Resorts... BUT... the 15% off is... try 'review15'

There was a thread floating around with the same issue... people are having luck with the 15% off code!

Thanks! That worked. Wow, looks like 30% plus the 15% plus they are giving 2 free magic my way tickets when you buy three days…

Thats a great deal…best out there next to the 'agency special' once a year.
Humm now ya got me thinking about first week in February with number 2 crowd calendar…

Thay should have a lot of stuff nearly done on the Poly by then.

Thanks again.

Club level is not for everyone but I can easily save with our family. Even if we don’t save as much as the cost of Club Level I have to agree that it is nice to know where we will end up and not worry about being in a longhouse we don’t prefer. I did a breakdown of cost we would have spent if we had not stayed Club Level back in 2009.

http://www.tikimanpages.com/poly/the-resort/planning/item/56-concierge-or-standard?

Thanks for sharing this link, Tikiman, that's a great breakdown, & your "Club Level Concierge" entry (http://www.tikimanpages.com/poly/the-resort/planning/item/56-concierge-or-standard?) is excellent--I really appreciate the pictures, including some that seem very recent--with the bungalows visible (I think?).

In general, Tikiman, you just rock. :rockband: Your website & Poly facebook page are fantastic. I love that I can keep an eye on the refurbishment from 800 miles away--thanks for all you do to keep us informed! :thanks:

I think that my teenagers, DH & I will make great use of the breakfast & snacks, and I love the option of having a glass of wine or a beer each evening. With several no-park days planned we'll have lots of time around the lounge. And I think we'll need mid-day breaks from the summer sun on our park days--our other park visits have been in February, so we're kind of wimps in regards to Florida sun. Our last summer park trip was to Universal and we melted!

I know we could save a good amount of money by not staying CL, but we've earned our treat and are so looking forward to it!

Boy this 'resorts' forum is a lot more pleasant than the "parks and attractions" one.

I agree, tim123--such good dispeoples over here, especially in the Poly thread! :goodvibes

If I book through Orbitz and cancel my existing reservation that I booked through Disney, do I lose my ADRs/BBB reservations?

Would be great to save an extra $300 per room! Thanks!

I was checking often. I was able to get the discount when I booked but it's not always available. There is a HOTEL10 or REVIEW15 (I did review) that works. Try those or keep looking.

I just went in at 8am 10/31 and tried both codes for 1/12-1/13/15. Both code worked combined with disney 30%off.

Thanks Nanhol. Actually I am almost 3000 miles away…ha. I have a lot of help and I keep in contact with the resort daily. Things change all the time like we were talking of the bus schedule and someone posted the transportation that shows the bus going to the Contemporary and Polynesian..well what people don’t understand is those routs change all the time. I have been in the same year where the bus went from the WL to the Polynesian and then to the GF and later that year the bus went Contemporary. Polynesian and GF and then it has gone to Polynesian and GF only. They change all the time so it is hard to tell people what it will be like when they get there.

Other things are changing every day at the resort because of construction and when I speak to the staff there they even tell me that things internally change every week so it is hard to keep up with the current state of things. I try and update my site or post on my Facebook as soon as I get info or sometimes I don’t update the site because I know it is going to change again soon. I do most of my daily updates on the Facebook page and I put the planning info on my web page. With help from many (including Tim123) I spend some time updating photos when I get free time from my job and kids. I have some big updates coming soon and next year I will have much more stuff on my pool page and my DVC pages.

As for the Club level, I love a nice breakfast but when we get up early to get into the parks I don’t want to get up even earlier to spend $25 a person on breakfast and wait to be seated or in a line at a counter service so I am happy to grab my breakfast from the lounge or bring it to the room while everyone is getting ready. I also like having those treats in the evening to enjoy after a long day in the park.

My above post has me confused now... hah!

I'd like to know too. Didn't the extra bus stop at MK eliminate the need for TTC busses to AK and HS?

108 days to go! LOL have our ADR's booked and got everything we wanted except Chef Mickey's, which upsets me just a little. Really wanted to have breakfast there but not going to ruin our trip at all.

Love checking this thread although wish there was more activity on it but with the construction going on I otally get it. Not really checking the theme park threads to much these days due to people complaning about FP+ etc. Which I totally get and I'm sure are valid, I just don't want to read about it day after day. I am thankful for the usual posters that keep this thread alive. Thanks peeps!

Keep checking daily as people cancel all the time and you never know if/when something will become available :).

Only 20 days:cool1:

:dance3:

I can't wait to stay at the Poly!!! :-)

It's a great resort, you're going to love it :goodvibes.

Another month down, only 13 more to go!

It seems far away, but the time will go quickly :wizard:.

Thanks for your review. Sorry you didn't enjoy the Poly like you wanted to.

I have to disagree with the point above about the Poly being on the "low end" of the deluxe resorts. We have stayed at all but 3 of the deluxe resorts and have found the Poly to provide the same deluxe services as all of the others we've stayed at as we didn't see any less at the Poly than anywhere else. Also, as others have said, there is no longer package delivery to the room at any of the deluxes anymore, so that is not individual to the Poly.

As far as transportation, we feel the Poly has good bus transportation. We love how convenient the resort is to MK as it's just 2 monorail stops away and is a quick walk to the TTC to catch the Epcot monorail, but we have never had trouble with the buses, either. With that said, it is great that Disney has so many choices to meet the needs of every person/family as not everybody likes every resort :wizard:.

Our first trip with the kids was at the Poly in 2009. Since then we've been to BC YC and CR. Our next trip is August 2015, back at the Poly....and I can hardly wait!! :cool1: I am trying to figure if CL would be a good fit for us. I REALLY want to try it! So hard to decide!

If the extra cost is doable, I'd give CL a try. I can't comment on CL at the Poly, but having stayed CL at other resorts, we like having the lounge for another place to go and relax other than in our room or around the resort. The food offerings are a nice perk, but when we stay CL, it's more for the lounge than the food. With that said, we spend a lot more time at the resort than we do the parks, so we get full use out of CL. Good luck with your decision :).

In all my resort stays my experience is that Poly had the best transportation. With boat or monorail option to MK, short walk to TTC for Epcot monorail, and I never waited more then 10 minutes for a bus to DHS or AK.

I agree :thumbsup2.

I booked Poly for August too :goodvibes. Great deal. Labour Day has the best discounts.
I'm also booked in January for POR :goodvibes. I never used to use a TA, but I'm getting quite spoiled. No long phone waits, and all I have to do to make a payment is send an email.

Yes, that Labor Day deal is great and is too good to pass up :thumbsup2. I am looking at a different deal for July for our family trip with the same TA and while I do enjoy calling, booking, etc., I find myself giving up that control to take advantage of the great deals :goodvibes.

Hi 5bound4wdw! Your story is just like mine! We started with the Poly in 2010 and have stayed at & scouted out the other deluxe resorts since then. We did not love the BC/YC, but we really like CR. However, for our relaxing club level stay next August we're returning to the Poly!

This will be our first full length club level stay...and I'm still questioning the cost...but since it's my 40th birthday trip I keep telling myself that I'm worth it! :rotfl2: Our first experience with club level was due to pixie dust on part of a split stay, and of course Disney made me fall in love with it! We're planning a relaxing trip, so I think we'll be around the lounge more often than we would be on our go-go-go trips.

Like you, I also have some qualms about the construction at the quiet pool and what that might do to our garden view...but having the lounge with views of MK must balance it out, right? (I hope!) I wish I knew more about what the reno at the quiet pool will be, but I haven't seen much about it yet.

I think Poly CL is a great choice for a birthday trip ::yes::. This is just my opinion, but I don't think the quiet pool being down for refurb will be a problem as I think Disney does a great job of making sure those kinds of things don't interfere too much with the guests enjoyment ;).

Hi all.

I have never stayed on site before, but have been to the Poly for breakfast earlier this year and thought it was a lovely hotel. There was construction work going on in the lobby, but I didn't really notice.

We are going on honeymoon next May, and we have a few days at Disney before picking up a Disney Cruise. I have booked the Poly for our stay, but I’m worried how much the construction will put a dampener on our honeymoon. We don't plan on using the pool as we have limited time, and this will be spent in the parks, but we do want to enjoy our stay and probably would use other amenities. I don't want to come home and think ahhh we should have stayed somewhere different!
It's really important to us that we are near Magic Kingdom, so I don't know if to change to the Grand Floridian? However I do really like the Poly, but wondering if the GF would be better for convenience? But if the construction is going to be minimal then would it be better to stay at the Poly?

Ahhhh I am so indecisive! Sorry! I can tell you now, it's hard planning a wedding when you second guess all the decisions lol!

This is just me, but I would book the Poly if that's where you really want to stay. The main pool is scheduled to reopen in March and while there will still be other construction going on, I think most of the major construction will be done by that time (although that's just my opinion). With that said, if you decide the Poly isn't for you this trip, I think the GF is a great alternative ;).

I do think you can have a great stay without club level

:thumbsup2

Boy this 'resorts' forum is a lot more pleasant than the "parks and attractions" one. They would've jumped on me there for saying my piece!

I agree. It's sad how some threads go south when someone gives their opinion on something that doesn't agree with other people's views :sad2:.

I know we could save a good amount of money by not staying CL, but we've earned our treat and are so looking forward to it!

CL is a great way to splurge every once in awhile :goodvibes.

If I book through Orbitz and cancel my existing reservation that I booked through Disney, do I lose my ADRs/BBB reservations?

Your ADRs will remain, even if you cancel your resort reservation as there is no connection between the two (except when you are booking ADRs at the 180 + 10 mark). However, if you have a package with tickets and have booked FPP, I'm not sure, but those might disappear. Hopefully someone else will be able to verify about FPP or correct me if I'm wrong :flower3:.

Glad to hear such nice things about CL. We recently booked a last minute Nov. trip and all that was available was CL, but it was such a reasonable price we just went for it. First trip to the Poly and really looking forward to it despite the construction. We're glass half full folks, so anticipate having a great time.

:wave2:Hi everyone!

My DH & I and possibly our adult DD's will be going back to the Poly in Dec. 2015. It'll be our 5th time staying there and 2nd time staying CL. This time it'll be the LV CL category and we're so looking forward to it. The atmosphere is so relaxing it's hard to think about staying anywhere else. We've met the friendly people there too. I'm also looking forward to seeing the changes especially the hot tub addition!

Does anyone have any view pictures from the LV rooms? Will we be looking at the water through palm tree branches? The only think that concerns me is we really don't want the second floor. There seems to be only 2 LV's on the 3rd floor and only 9 on the ground floor.

Anyway, just coming over to join everyone. Only 400 days to go. :thumbsup2

:wave2:Hi everyone! My DH & I and possibly our adult DD's will be going back to the Poly in Dec. 2015. It'll be our 5th time staying there and 2nd time staying CL. We are checking in Dec 5 as well! (is it sad that I know your check-in date based on days to go?! LOL!!!) See you there! :)

Glad to hear such nice things about CL. We recently booked a last minute Nov. trip and all that was available was CL, but it was such a reasonable price we just went for it. First trip to the Poly and really looking forward to it despite the construction. We're glass half full folks, so anticipate having a great time.

Congrats on your first trip to the Poly, I'm sure you'll have a great time :goodvibes.

I can't help with information or pics of LV CL, but wanted to say congrats on booking another Poly trip :). December 2015 seems far away, but I'm sure the time will go fast :wizard:.
