ALOHA! The Poly FAQ~ Spring 2010 Edition

Our last stay at the Poly was in 2008, I remember one day we were at the pool for the entire day.... I don't remember there being loud music or games or anything like that...

When did this begin?

Last year we were at the GF, and I remember it..... I was hoping it was only a GF thing :sad2:

Third floor vs patio? Anyone care to tell me why they prefer a LV/TPV room on the third floor? Does the railing get in the way of the view when sitting down?

I'm looking forward to my resort stay at Poly CL stay almost more than the Parks? I can't believe I said that out loud, I feel guilty--like Mickey Mouse is upset with me!! I'm just ready to bask in the sun at the Volcano pool beach with my family!!!! :cutie:

Believe me, Mickey is perfectly content with the green you shelled out to him when you booked your CL room. :rotfl:

Seriously, though, I LOVE the first day/evening of our trips because we just laze around the resort. I love grabbing a lounger just before dark and taking a last breath before we hit the parks the next day. :cloud9:

Yep, I always arrive on a saturday around noon and unpack and lounge around the resort then Sunday I do the same or shop/explore a little at other resort gift shops and the third day I start at the Parks, I always schedule more off days to chill than go to parks..

The rates are out for 2011 in case anyone was waiting. These are for room only and it is going to be about ansother mobnth before the package prices are available.

All I am saying is that there better be some sort of discount for March. The Poly is great and all, but it is no $500/night great for a GV room.

Seems to me the rack rates are higher than last year.

SO DH had me call yesterday to see how much it will be to upgrade to GV CL and its $661! More than I was hoping but he really wants to do this..Now our AC broke two days ago but we had to take his son back to TN so havent had a chance to get anyone out here yet so I guess when he comes this afternoon we will see what that damage is before I actually book the upgrade..Yall send me some pixie dust that it wont deplete the bank account and he gets the air working, its been over 90 degrees the past two nights in the house and I just cant take it anymore!

Our May trip was TPV patio...unbelievable view!!! We weren't really excited when they told us about the patio, but after a day or so, I fell in love with the convenience!! If you click on my trip report below, I have pictures from the patio view of the castle. It was great for the kids...they could run around outside in the grass while we sat on the patio and relaxed...easy to walk out to the beach, also. One of the reasons we choose TPV & not LV is that I wanted to make absolutely sure that the castle view was unobstructed....didn't want to have to look around any palm trees;) Although, from many reports on this thread, the LV does have an awesome view of the castle...who knows??

I'm sorry you're a :( about the activities, but my kids are going to be this :dance3:when they see them!

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not sad about the activities. We were only sad when the volcano pool was closed AND the activities were moved to the quiet pool. There was no way to enjoy the atmosphere with dance music, hula hooping, etc--it was not quiet and very crowded. I think it's great the resorts have the kid's activities at the themed pools.

where did you find the 2011 rates cause I am looking on the Disney site and I can only get 2010?

I looked at the WDW website, but didn't see any 2011 prices. What site did you look on for the prices??? I sure a GV room isn't going up $135 a night:scared1:

So far, you have to call to get them. They won't show up on line until the package prices are ready as well, in a few weeks.

Tess, I thought of the poopy pool incidents from your trip while I was swimming in the volcano pool last week.... It made me wonder, do the lifeguards just happen to notice something floating in the pool (isn't this a scene from Groundhog Day? :lmao: ) or do the parents say something???

During the 24 hour closure, I guess the mess was quite obvious and major. We arrived after the closure and got the full scoop from the rec staff later that day. The second closure we saw the lifeguards fishing it out with the skimmer.:scared1: The second closure wasn't all that long, but did cause a pool evacuation. :headache:

Honestly, we were surprised at the closures. Thunder and lightning closures happen all the time, but not the accident closures. In all our years at the Polynesian it has never happened while we were there. Of course, we heard about things like that from other guests staying elsewhere, but had never witnessed it. It was just a bad coincidence that it occurred twice during our stay.

Someone else mentioned the movie--it was Caddyshack and they were correct--it was a Babe Ruth bar floating.

I know what you mean about the patio view:cloud9:. We loved our LV patio room on our last visit. My kids ran back and forth to the beach, it was like having an extra room. This upcoming trip will be TPV for us since that was all that was available for CL. I would prefer to get a TPV patio room during our stay, but I was looking at Tikimans site and there are more LV than TPV rooms on the first floor so I thought it might be better to request third floor since all but one are TPV. I do not want to get a second floor room so I thought my odds would be better of getting my request made if I requested third floor.

Did you put in a request for what floor you would like?

Actually, I didn't have to call to get them. I already have our vacation booked through Disney Destinations and they emailed me a new receipt with the rates included. We are there for 8 nights and we have a GV room. The total is a little over $4200. This is just the room. No tickets, no dining plan.

This will be the third year in a row that we have gone in March and all three times we have had a discount. I am not sure who pays that rate otherwise. Crazy.

Edit: I should add the rates they emailed me: I am booked March 5-13th.

Night 1- $470
Nights 2-6- $445
Nights 7&8- $540

Quick Question on Room Request on CL.. I made my room request when I booked the Poly but since Im about to upgrade to CL are thos request still on there or do I need to contact someone else? If so can I get that number or email for once Ive made the upgrade?

Update on my AC.. DH called someone else out and they will be there at noon..Im praying like crazy they get it fixed TODAY at a reasonable price..

Thats why I love those 40% + pins otherwise I would never go to the Poly.

Word. I mean, this is for a GARDEN VIEW!!!!! Not club, not theme park view, but Garden View. I can't believe that anyone would pay that much for a room.

My first request was connecting rooms (my parents were with us), 2nd request was 3rd floor, 3rd request was 1st floor...they gave us connecting rooms on 1st floor. Maybe you could put in a request for patio, then 3rd floor??? I think they really try and honor request if possible.

Good luck! Either floor will be fantastic while looking at the castle!

OK guys here goes! We are back and I am now rested so this is my Poly CL report:

We arrived around 11:30am at the Poly via DME. No luggage since DME would deliver it later that day. checked in at the desk out front and they called for CL. They said it would be about 5 or 10 min wait so we decided to walk to the Hawaii bldg. We were greeted and told our room was ready. (rm 1513). Great view of castle (though we only paid for lagoon view.)

We grabbed a bite from the lounge and headed to MK.

Now, I am not good at describing the offerings in the lounge. Breakfast was the same almost daily. Steel-cut oatmeal is THE BEST and i ate it almost every morning. They also had fruit, cereal, juices and the rolls/muffins/croissants varied by the day. Daily "snack" offerings were cookies, goldfish, pretzels, gummy sharks, Late evening offerings varied by the day as well (usually 3 items were out); small cupcakes, brownies, stuff like that. Besides wine and beer they have their own version of Sangria which was great. (they set out a pitcher during dinner.)

Dinner offerings mostly had an "Asian" flavor...dumplings, pot stickers bbq, egg rolls, teriyaki pork. They put out 2 "main" offerings every night. 2 nights they also had a small salad. They put out fruit, cheese, crackers, hummus & pita bread every night. The first 4 night the chef was very young (don't remember his name) but he was so sweet and talked to us every night. He played baseball in college so he and my DS17 who plays baseball talked often. Last few nights the chef was older and he didn't really speak to us unless we spoke to him and even at that he only answered direct questions. Oh well...

I am so glad we did not do the dining plan. Since it was hot while we were there we just didn't have much of an appetite (kids included) and we snacked on the CL offerings if we were at the resort. We only had 3 sit-down meals in 8 days; Yak and Yeti, Crystal Palace, and T-Rex.

We watched Nightastic from either the beach or our room if we were at the resort and LOVED doing it that way! Only saw it at MK once.

We found all of the CM's very helpful in the CL, though honestly we did not use them for much. My kids (age 7 to 17) enjoyed having the ducks outside of our room every day. They even named many of them. My DS17 named the big one Thor (those of you who have been there recently know which one I mean).

The pool was crowded, and I thought the parks were crowded as well but we haven't been in the summer for quite a long time. We love the ambiance of the Poly...could not imagine staying at GF or Contemporary.

We did not get a rental car; used dis transport only. Walked to TTC almost daily. Longest wait for a bus was coming home from DTD one evening; waited maybe 25 mins.

I used the laundry 3 times (afternoon) which was never busy.

I pre-paid for the photopass cd ($99) and am still putting borders, etc on pics but am glad we used photopass this time around. I figure $99 for 75 pics on a CD is fair.

Our family made blankets in February for the Give-a-day promotion so we each had a GAD certificate. I decided we should use those for fast-passes since we were going at a busy time. I cannot tell you what a difference those made in our trip. We each got 6 extra fast-passes (to be used on 2 dif categories of rides) for 5 days. AND when we went to will call at MK to trade in one of the GAD certificates we were asked to be in the volunteer parade that day at 3pm! My DS7 was so excited. It was HOT riding in the parade but fun too. That was a new experience for us for sure!

Best new dining exp. - we had never been to Yak and Yeti before and there was something for everyone in my family. We all enjoyed that meal.

New Experience - napping in a hammock at the Poly with DH. Have stayed there before but never napped in a hammock. I highly recommend it!!

Best new technology - I have Verizon so downloaded the Disney Mobile Magic app. $9.99. Gave us wait times on rides, whether FP's were available, park hours, etc. We used it numerous times a day.

Sad to see it go - DS7 liked to ride in the front car of monorail with the driver whenever we could. We were told they no longer do that and noticed that no one was ever in the front car but the driver. :(

If anyone has any questions please let me know. We had another great Poly stay! There was a bounce-back offer in our room but we did not use it.
