ALOHA! The Poly FAQ~ Spring 2010 Edition

This post is for the obsessive compulsives among us. My wife is a biologist, and I'm a chemist. We sometimes trend towards that direction.

According to the CDC, water temperatures above 84-degrees F reduce the disinfectant properties of chlorine.

A review of 5,000 public hot tubs by the CDC showed 60% to be neglected and capable of making people sick.

I'm reminded of the elephant in Tarzan saying "is this water sanitary?"

Of course sometimes in life you just have to not think about it.

Yeah, I have to say that I'd be stunned of they shut down the quiet pool during the hottest season, unless it was a real emergency. It just doesn't jive with how Disney does these things. I hope we'll get some sort of official confirmation or denial, because to be honest I might change resorts too if there's gonna be a lot of construction during my August stay, much as it pains me to say that.

And I've never missed having a hot tub at the Poly. They skeeve me out big time.

We were staying at the Poly from June 4th to the 12th and after exhaustive research (staff members called rehab managers, general manager, and pool supervisor) they have no scheduled rehab in AUG! So the only way they plan on shutting down the main pool or the quiet pool is if something catastrophic happened!

WARNING...MAJOR GROSS-OUT FACTOR HERE
We used to have a hot tub at home. My husband was meticulous about keeping it clean, the right chemicals (they don't use chlorine by the way, it's a different type of chemical), right temperature, etc. He lived in that thing, loved it.

I remember one instance where he didn't tend to the hot tub...think he might have missed one or two days, something "insignificant" like that...and man oh man, you would not believe what happened. ...he went in the hot tub, and the next day, he broke out in these gross little bumps ALL OVER HIS BODY:eek:. It was SOOOO disgusting. It was completely as a result of an unclean hot tub (and this coming from someone who was a nut about keeping the hot tub clean!).

I NEVER go in public hot tubs...ever! I'm not saying this has happened to anyone in the tubs at WDW, but just the thought of this, and how sensitive the temps/chemicals ratio is, well...you get the picture. NOT FOR ME!!!:scared1:

how about july?

I emailed our IPO yesterday when I read this and here's the response I just received.

Thank you so much for contacting our office with your questions. We have confirmed with our recreation manager that the quiet pool is not scheduled to go down for rehab in August. It will be going down for refurbishment in the future but not in August. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office.

I did ask specifically about our dates, or if it went into construction prior to our dates would it be completed by the time we traveled.

So for those of you wondering about August, you can resume planning as normal! :cool1:

Thanks so much for the update! We will be there in August and I just couldn't imagine them purposely planning to do any work on the pools in the summer months, LOL. Glad to hear that we should be good for our trip.

We'll be there in 2 weeks (July 5th) and I emailed IPO last night as well. This was their reply this morning:

Aloha!

I am not sure where the rumor started, however we have no information about the quiet pool being closed until much later in the year. We have confirmed this with our head of recreation.

So, no pool refurbs this summer, it seems! :sunny:

First of all THANK YOU (and to Tess and Carlinx) for letting us know!!! That's why I love this thread - everyone is so helpful!!!!

And secondly, I'm especially relieved to hear the part that it won't be closed until 'much later in the year' which I HOPE means not in September when I am there (yes, selfish of me but I'm bringing some first timers and I want them to be able to use both Poly pools...and I want to too!).

Back to regular programming...

thanks we called before and they also said nothing was schedueled for june july or august so thats good news now i can stop worrying and get excited again

 Not all longhouses have the sitting area outside the elevator - the ones with a sitting area are: Tokelau, Tahiti and Rapa Nui. The sitting area can be quite far from the room though, but you could request a room very close to the elevator in one of those longhouses, then you'd be able to see the door to your room.

Some other longhouses have a deck with a table and a couple of chairs - some of these have become smoking area, but do not know every one of those for sure...and of course, would not be able to see the door unless it was the room right on the end - which you could also ask for at check-in. I'd suggest not doing on line check-in, but working with the CM to find a location that might work best.

The closest longhouses to TTC would be the ones above - it would be about a 5 minute walk to actually board the monorail and about the same distance to GCH. Add on a few minutes from the opposite end of the resort to TTC - with small children it could be a good 10 min walk, but it's a beautiful walk - either along pathways or mostly along the beach, then up a sidewalk between longhouses to the TTC walkway (this would be a bit longer walk).

Hope this helps, but am sure others will have helpful info as well. :thumbsup2

You could request a room with balcony that way you and dh could sit out there while your son goes to sleep

Thx for your responses! I did request a balcony. That was my only request. We mostly use it during nap time though. I am from Charleston, so I know all too well about the creepy crawlies that come out at night on porches. I avoid them after dark.

ah .... so glad to hear no pool construction for a while ... that wouldn't make sense for the middle of summer.

I received my letter from IPO yesterday with our arrival information (the one Tess mentioned receiving 10 days out).

Tess ... hope you are having a great time ... btw ... is hot oatmeal still available for breakfast in the lounge? Please say 'yes' :)

You're welcome! Me too about the creepy crawlies!! We do not sit on curbs, steps or porches in the parks after dark either!

Ok - this will only be our second time at Poly in Aug - the first trip it was too chilly at night to sit out on the balcony. What creepy crawlies come out????? I hate bugs!!

I've stayed in a balcony and a patio room at the Poly and it came with the usual suspects - the occasional insect or spider, lovebugs, and plenty of ducks wandering our way on the patio. It was quite enjoyable :goodvibes

DH emailed yesterday and got almost the exact response.

(We arrive on the 3rd--see you there!)

Thanks! I can handle those, as well as the lizzards. But, I wasn't sure if there's anything else I need to be concerned about while I'm there.
