ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

Aloha everyone!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm still around and that a new FAQ thread will arrive shortly. I'll have it up soon, before we hit our 250 page limit here. :goodvibes (I'm hoping for tomorrow night, if I don't keep getting sidetracked).

Thanks Rob! :woohoo::yay:

LOVE it!!! and woo hoo to being under 100 days :cool1::banana:

(totally ignoring the snow in your picture as much as I'm trying to ignore the snow that just started falling here :D)

I think you've sold me! We stick to normal routines and do not do many late nights, maybe one for Wishes, but last summer we actually sent the kids to the Neverland Club while DH and I went to the Wishes dessert party as DS did not like being that close to the fireworks and cried our first night at MK during fireworks. And, these are just two of the reasons I chose the Poly for our next trip - Neverland Club and fireworks from the Poly! I hadn't thought about having extra space indoors to relax in. Thanks again! I think I'm going to call this afternoon and upgrade to CL! :yay:

We did our first CL stay for marathon weekend this year. I have 3 kids - 6, 4, and 2 - and loved having access to the lounge. My kids are early risers and don't last late at night. They've never seen fireworks in a park but they were able to watch from the lounge (in PJs!). One morning my younger 2 were up by 6am. I was able to let my DH and my eldest sleep a little longer by taking the little ones to the lounge. They watched Playhouse Disney and had some fruit loops and bananas while we waited for the breakfast spread to come out. It was really nice to have that space so we weren't all forced up at an early hour.
At bedtime either DH or I would run upstairs to the lounge to grab 2 drinks (they have plastic cups for this) and bring them downstairs so we could have a little drink together while the kids were drifting off to sleep.
I think it was worth the price for us!
One caveat: We do not enjoy the dining plan. We find it very limiting. We are AP holders and have a TIW card which works much better for us.

Thanks for your hard work!! I was just reading your great trip report and am so happy (for lack of a better word) that someone else knows how to explain what we did not like about the "new" Space Mountain. It was mine and DD10's favorite ride too and after our May 2010 trip we really have no desire to ride it again for the reasons you described.:sad2:
It really was a sad sad day!
Now to see if DD17 notices this difference this May...hope someone still enjoys it.

Thanks!!!! It felt so far away when it was 100+ days. lol. What a difference a day makes.

And I wish i could ignore the snow. The piles in front of our house reached about 5 feet today after shoveling. Again.

I love it! I may have to borrow that idea for our next trip:worship:. Our last one was similar, but I like the 100 day mark :thumbsup2

Will the Grad nites be a "problem" with noise at the Poly or in the parks? I only ask because I need to plan around DD's autistic needs and noises are her worst nightmares. We'll be there for 8 nights, including both Grad nites week-ends.

1000 thanks

:tinker:Poussière de fée!

Hi,
I am not an expert as we also have our first trip upcoming. We have a Aspi kid on the spectrum as well, so I asked around this on other forums as well. An I was assured that grad night happened inside MK, and very very few would stay at The Poly, so was told not to worry at all.
But I am sure someone with more knowledge will come along and reassure you.

Most of the grad night kids go to HS and MK. They can be a nightmare mostly it is in MK. They stay more at the value resorts. The Poly is always an oasis of relaxing solitude..:thumbsup2 enjoy a day lazing around the pool when the crazy teens are running around MK:lmao:

Good morning folks :)

So how did everyone fare with this "storm" we had? Luckily we got off pretty easy compared to what they were predicting we were going to get. Schools are closed because of a PD day, and DH called into work, not wanting to chance the highway....so I may just have to look productive today ;)

Hopefully everyone is safe at home with visions of the Poly dancing in their heads :)

I'm enjoying my first day of leave from work, and since the mayor wouldn't close our schools I had to decide to keep DS home on my own. I was going back and forth with the decision until I opened our front door and saw our sidewalk and street were both a sheet of ice. We're both home looking at Poly pics and working on our Disney binders. :woohoo:

Hope everyone else is safe and warm!

Were still in the midst of it here, expecting another 10" or so and then it will change to sleet and freezing rain for a while before going back to snow. Kids are home (yet again), and I'm just staring in awe at how much is on the ground. We haven't had a winter like this in many many years.

On the upside, Punxsutawney Phil had no shadow so supposedly it will be an early spring. :woohoo: Maybe that means the snow will clear sometime around May!

Hello all Poly experts! I have switched my reservations from the Cont. to the Poly. I originally used the 40% code for the Cont. but the more I thought about it I changed to the Poly.

I LOVE the Cont. and have wanted to stay there since I was a little kid. This will be my FIRST stay at the poly.... This is also the first time my 3 children have stayed on site (with the exception of Music site 12 years ago or so) and first time they have been been in 10 years..

this is the first time that PH (4) then will go to Disney. PT (13) and PA (16) will be old enough to trot around alone. This is also the first time KT (DH) will go to Disney. AND HE IS A HUMBUG!!! Poor man, he does not see what the big deal is and thinks Disney is a product of American consumerism (don't bash him, I love him) he just doesn't know... YET.

Sooo. since I changed to the Poly, I have been a little questioning and nervous and I am hoping you can help.

I heard that everything is done through the computers now, so requesting a room is just that because they are automated to choose the rooms now. I can only afford the Garden room, and would love to be one something other than the first floor and WOULD love to be able to get into the rooms that have baloconys (I know only a certain longhouses have them) but ... well.... If I do not get those rooms, are there any bad views?

We also know that they are probably not going to have a bunch of empty rooms when we will be there (dec 17-23)

Also, the walk to everything.. is it a haul? With a tired 4 year old, am I going to regret not having the convienence of the compact resort like the Cont. Is it a long walk anywhere? realistically?

I have also heard that the rooms are leave something to be desired by users here on Disboards. I LOVE the colors... I love the 'darker' aspect... my family finds that comforting and warm... but otherwise.. is there anything that should be of concern?

We really want PH4 to go to the Neverland club while we go out to eat. PT13 and PA16 want to go out as well. I was thinking about Ohana... I dont really want to do the Luau.

I like the pool, but depending on the weather, I am betting on being able to really use it, but we'll see;")

Please convince me that I have made the best choice or I will drive myself mad over the next 10 months!!!!!!!!:rotfl2:

And :welcome: to the Polynesian thread! I think you've made a fabulous decision to switch from Contemporary to the Polynesian, but I am admittedly biased. The Contemporary has no draw for me.

The Polynesian is not a sprawling resort like CBR or CSR. The walk from even the farthest buildings Aotearoa and Tahiti/Rapa Nui to the GCH is not far. Obviously the walk from TTC to the farthest side of the resort (Aotearoa) is a bit farther than some of the other longhouses, but still not bad.

The GV room views are some of the nicest on property. I'm sure there are a few at the resort that leave something to be desired, but for the most part--the views are pools, foliage, and monorail. As to the rooms, we have always found our rooms clean and well-maintained. There are always exceptions and if you have issues, by all means report it to mousekeeping or engineering for repair. They can't fix what they don't know is broken.

It is my understanding you are correct, room assignments are being made by computer based upon category. You are still able to make a request and reiterate it at check-in if you aren't happy with your assignment. You should prioritize your requests in order of preference, e.g., balcony, Tokelau and keep them to a minimum. :thumbsup2

Hope you have fun planning--we're here if you need questions answered.
