ALOHA! The Poly FAQ: Fall 2010 Edition

"Rat infested longhouse"

HUH?!?!?! Which one?! Please tell me...because if we stay at the Poly and I see a rat, especially a rat INSIDE i think i will die.

Sorry! It's an old joke here in the Poly thread. Several months ago some of us were trashing our favorite longhouses in jest in an attempt to deter others from requesting rooms in them (therefore leaving more availability for us). There are no rodents at the Poly (that I'm aware of ) unless the big guy in the jaunty red pants counts!

Why does it seem like a lot of people have complained about the carpet in the rooms being wet? What is that from? Do they clean the rugs after guests???

I don't think they clean the room carpet after each guest - our room was never wet. However, the second day we were there mousekeeping was shampooing the hall carpet. It hadn't appeared dirty before, so we assumed it was just regular maintenance. Probably the same occurs with the rooms.

Do they have them?

And, if so, do they provide sheets for them, or should I bring my own sheet from home? I will already be bringing "bankie" which happens to be a warm velour fleece that will be fine for her covers.

gypsydoodlebug--Loved the video. Thanks for sharing. You know they love school when you tell them they are going to WDW and they are worried about missing classes. Too funny:lmao:

Meh. I figure, what can they do? Put her in second-grade jail? She makes straight Os on her report card. :confused3

I'm managing editor of a trade publication covering the restaurant industry, so she gets to travel quite a bit (Niagara Falls! Chicago!) so they're cool with us. (I hope... :rolleyes1)

They have pack n plays and will provide sheets. On our last stay at the Poly (which was 2008), we were able to get a "real" crib with sheets. We stayed at Beach Club in August and also got a real crib with sheets. They even brought us an extra sheet, in case of emergency. ;)

Guitarob, thanks so much for this thread!:woohoo:

Background - My DD12 wants to go to the next Flower and Garden Festival. We stayed at a value resort and an off-site resort (yes, in know :scared1:) in the past. I was hoping to stay at the POLY this time. My BFF who is as DIStracted as I am, just returned from a stay at the POLY with her DH. He, like my DH is well, let's say....missing some pixie dust when it come to Disney. :sad2: But now her DH a fully converted Disbrat! It was the POLY, the fireworks on the beach, with a little free dining plan thrown in that converted him. He even told my DH - a stay at the POLY is the only way to go! Guitarob, your thread is the icing on the cake! It helped me to convince my DH that we simply have to stay at the POLY on our next visit!!! The monorail, a.k.a. Poly-bar Fast Track, sounded intriguing to him as well! :lmao: Thanks again for your hard work :worship:, and the pics from MsStinkerBelle, Dawgdad and Cajunwdwfan too! Now, has anyone seen my ticker? DH's always hiding it! :rolleyes1

When the kids are young and keep up with their schoolwork, taking them out of school is easy peasy. We have always taken the kids out of school for vacay so that we aren't traveling at busy times and can have a more relaxing vacay. The teachers have always been very supportive:goodvibes This will be the first year we don't. DD12 is now in 7th grade and has a few more challenging advanced classes and money is tight so...we are going in late August to Navarre Beach for a super-relaxing beach trip before school starts back after labor day.

Men are so funny like that! My DH is such a bah-humbug. Before our first WDW trip he was a total downer to the point he complained almost daily about what a waste of money it would be, yada yada yada. Fast forward to our 2nd day(of 5days) in the pool at the CR--"WOW! this is awesome! We should do this every year but next time let's stay longer!". The next year we stayed Poly for a whole 8 days. It is our favorite now and we compare everything to Poly! Stayed at YC back in April and it was lovely but we missed the Poly. DH loves that it is relaxing and he knows the layout. He loves the food at CCs and the drinks at the pool bar with a nearby hammock for chillin'. The EWP, the fireworks, the castle, the boat horns, the MK train whistle, the tiki torches....your DH will be a TOTAL convert! Make sure you show your DH tikiman's site for even more info.

This seems to be a matter up for debate. Apparently with the new system a computer will be doing the room assignments. There is a thread here:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2616116
although the thread seems to have degraded into a discussion about people being "picky whiners" and you're just booking a room category and a room shouldn't ruin your vacation ... blah, blah, blah, popcorn:: However, someone who seems to be in the know says that you can still make requests. They said the computer will make the "first pass" at assigning rooms and then a room assigner will look at notations made on reservations. They also said that CM's will also attempt to accommodate room requests at check-in. At this point I don't think anyone knows for sure how it is going to work, so until we know definitely how the new system is working I would still make the request. It can't hurt! At the worst the reservation CM will just tell you they aren't taking room requests anymore - which I find hard to believe since there are people who make legitimate requests that are important to their parties for other than "preference' (for example, someone needing to be close to the elevator because of mobility issues, families needing more than one room wanting to be together etc)

We decided to go to Disney this January in mid December--- I made my package reservations on December 13. This was *right* before the latest upgrade. The CM who took our reservations was not only completely lovely, but she took the longhouse/ room request. She actually made a little joke about how I was so specific, she could tell we are serious Poly fans! She gave the usual spiel about "its only a request" and told me to NOT check in online-- said that its better when you have a specific request to just check in at the desk in person. This seems to line up with what I have read on these boards about the online check in rooms being assigned by a computer that does not take requests into account.

Since we are going in *24* days, I will be sure to report back!!!

Anyone on here need some POLY- specific fairy godmailing?

Wow! That's so encouraging! :yay: And the Tikiman's site is amazing! Thanks for recommending it! The descriptions of the longhouses are really thorough. I'm thinking about Tahiti or Tokelau since the walk to the TTC should be a short one. There always seems to be such a short wait and ride from there. But will that make for a long walk to the ceremonial house? That's were we get the monorail, right? Which longhouse(s) have you stayed in? What were your impressions? I hope you don't mind the questions, you sound like an expert.

I could really use a ticker right about now!:cold:

We have stayed twice in a ground floor GV room in Fiji on the Luau cove side. The walk to GCH is very quick, even in rain, because you can go in the side door.

We were watching our videos from our first POLY trip last night with our DDalmost2 to get her excited. When I saw the shots of my DD8 (then 4 in the video) dancing around in her Princess dress on the Luau cove beach-- I was sold again on the quiet of that stretch. It was a beautiful day and there was no one out there but us and our friends the ducks...

My DH likes how relaxing it is to be able to just go right out to that little beach and rock in a swing. And its for GV price! (the room's view is of the beach, lagoon, and garden leading to GF and Luau Cove. From the beach itself you can see the castle and the GF and the wedding chapel.)

HIGHLY recommend!

May I ask which room you chose and why? It would really help me in deciding which longhouse is best for us (DH, DD12). I'm new to the boards so, are you planning on a trip report or do you offer godmailing if an email address is forwarded to you?

:tink:Thanks!

That sounds beautiful and what a great place to escape to in the heat of the day. :cloud9: The lagoon view and other perks sound great for the GV price too! :thumbsup2

Ok, I am back to this thread... we tried the Poly this past summer and pretty much loved it! And we booked the Poly for our upcoming July 2011 trip. My DD8 has always loved CR, but she now says that the Poly is right up there for her 1 choice of a resort. whoa!

So.. a question for all of you Poly experts... I was thinking about the Spirit of Aloha show since we are staying there. Thoughts on it? Our kids are 11 and 8.

I cannot wait, 197 days to go, but who's counting? :rolleyes1

:tink:Thanks!

We did a lot of research before our first trip, and a great trip report by a lady named mommypoppins sold me on the Fiji building.

When we go on vacation, like everyone else, we like to have a water view. As a family we are big fans of tropical/ beachy themes in general, and so we really wanted to be able to see some beach but could not afford lagoon or theme park view. I read on here that the Luau Cove side of Fiji actually has views of the lagoon at Luau Cove-- not expansive views, not castle views, but water and sand and palm trees. Plus, we were traveling with a 4 year old and thought being right there ground level would be good because she and DH could play while I got ready!

We had room 1310 or 1308 (can't recall-- had one the first time and the other the second) and it was PERFECT. So, when we went back to the POLY for a second trip, we requested the same thing-- Fiji, ground floor, Luau Cove side-- and got another great room.

Not every room on Luau Cove side has a beach view, but all seem to have a nice view. And it is REALLY REALLY quiet except right before the Luaus. We were never disturbed by the Luaus at all. We could not hear them from the room with the doors shut when we were resting, and we enjoyed hearing the activity when we were getting ready so we opened the doors.

NO ONE ever strolled right outside our room. It was great and we loved it! On all our non-ADR mornings we had coffee outside on our little patio and really enjoyed it-- very quiet, tropical and relaxing. At night after DD went to sleep we sat out there and had drinks (DH ran up to the bar at Ohana for them )

I *may* do a TR-- not sure. I'll post the link here if I do!

If you PM me your info I can send a fairy godmailer from the POLY. I leave on Jan 23 and my DD's birthday party is the 22nd, so... send it to me before the 21st!

Hope this helps.

No wonder you picked the Fiji! It sounds amazing! We grew up near the beach so I can totally relate to the need for sun, sand, and waves (o.k. - small ripples!) Thanks for offering the fairy godmailer too! I'll send a PM.
