Well just look at our counter !!

We are nearly there :hyper:

Suitcases are packed the house has had the deep cleaning treatment - which it gets when we go away

The parrot has his case packed and is ready to leave for his holiday to his grannys - so have the guinea pigs.

Roger (the dog) is in his usual depressed state as he always is when we go away ! as soon as he spots the suitcase come out of the loft he goes into deep depression. He's off to stay with auntie Jill and her 12 other dogs.

However, our poor bunny has got a nasty eye infection so is off to the vets.

The cats can't wait to have the house to themselves - they don't like the dog. However, this means that the fish are worried cos there will be no back up to keep the cats off the pond !
:teeth:

So we are now ready --- but I have no idea how I'm gonna get on that plane when the time comes -- I'm terrified Last year I froze at the plane door and couldn't get on !

Any tips would be gratefully received !!

You say you couldn't get on the aircraft. Does that mean your holiday was cancelled? I suspect you eventually got on as you are putting yourself through the experience again and it must be quite expensive cancelling these holidays. Maybe your problems are all in your mind, do what you did last time to overcome the temporary fear and I think you know your going to be OK

Hi Florry

Im not a great flyer either, so I have great sympathy for you. Ive tried all the herbal remedies, Kalms, and even Valium from the Docs. None of helped. I find THE ONLY thing to get me on the plane and up in the air is a few stiff drinks. Its not the most PC route to take, but it works for me. After Im up and the seatbelt sign has gone off, Im usually OK and need no further alcoholic stimulation ;) . I also have a very good DH who knows tons about flying, and when I start to panic if the plane turns or does something "odd" he can usually tell me whats going on. I also remember the statistics...insurance salesmen have higher premiums than Pilots, there were 765 MILLION people on flights through the UK in 2002/3 and NOT ONE died. Stuff like that helps me a bit. Also, I always treat myself to a long anticipated book or CD from the duty free shops. This helps me focus throughout the flights. I also tinker with my itinerary and keep a WDW guidebook on hand to remember why I put myself through this every year!

Also explain the check in staff AND cabin crew who are usually good, giving you the chance to board first (or last in my case!!). Virgin even supply a couple of shots of brandy before take off!

Not sure if any of this has helped, but I really do know what you are going through. Fingers crossed you will be FINE.

Have a fantastic trip.

Florry, you will be fine. I know that's easier said than done, but just look at those statistics Allie quoted! I arrived back yesterday morning and we had a great flight there and back. The worst bit will be getting on the plane, once you are in your seat and settled it'll be better. Just keep thinking of where you are going and I am sure that'll help.

Have a great holiday.

Hi Florry :) ...... there are many people who unfortunately feel like this and we have some great advice on past threads from people who have to conquer this terrific anxiety - worth a search so that you can read through them.

Are you okay once the flight has taken off? If you could preoccupy yourself somehow - to block your panicky thoughts out until you are in the air. I would definitely take some kind of travel sickness or calming medication which works prior to getting on the plane.

Think of what is at the end of the flight, not the flight itself. Think of your plans and all you are going to do!

I really hope you can overcome your fear so that we can all read what a great time you had :) ...... go on Florry :) .. you can do it :) !

Thanks for all your advice --- I know I've gotta get on ! I managed to get on last time but through a wobbly at the door ! I can't stand all the people faffing about putting their luggage in the overheads and then getting up agian cos they have forgotten something.
If I could just get on , sit down and go I would be ok! Once I'm up there I'm alright but on edge ! I clock watch all the time. I am ok with the landing :)

I've got my knock out drops with me (Rescue Remedy) they are quite good so fingers crossed :p

Thanks again all

Florry you can ask to board at the very last minute if this helps you?? Its the sitting around waiting to take off that I find the most stressfull as well.

Allie

Dear Florry,

I haven't got much to add to the excellent advice you've already had - but what I find helpful is just to try and "block out" everything around me and focus on the end destination. For example, when I sit on the plane waiting to take off I just sit there and concentrate on the thought of being on Main Street and looking up at the castle. Usually before I know it I am airbourne (I find it OK when I'm up, it's the getting up and down I struggle with).

Not sure if this helps you or not - to be honest I was also told to do this during labour (!!) - and let me tell you that did not work!! :)

You have a fantastic holiday!!

Have to admit I go into a bit of a cleaning frenzy before we go on holiday too.......::yes::

Just relax - think of all the great times you're going to have when you get there.

Have fun

Have you thought about one of those flights for nervous fliers? They're supposed to be very helpful. I also know of someone who was helped by hypnosis.

Hi Florry

My DS in Law is a very nervous flyer - it's mainly take off that affects her - she's fine after that.

If you don't like sitting waiting whilst everyone else boards - you don't have to board when your rows are called. Just wait until the end when they call for 'all remaining rows'. Get on the very end of the queue and you shouldn't have a very long wait after boarding before take off.

How about relaxation cd's. Don't worry about everyone else. If it helps to listen to a CD - whether it is relaxation, music or a book CD do it whilst you are boarding.

Remember - it's a means to an end!!

happy holiday

Florry

I am sure you will be OK - think of Mickey :)

Have a fabulous holiday!

Florry, {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}} you will be fine, I am a nervy flyer but once I am on and strapped in ( I never take off my seat belt, even when they say you can) I am fine, try the rescue remedy, just be careful that they are ok to take with other things.

Have a great holiday I am so jealous that you are going to AKL!!

Florry, there are many people just like you!! I work as an air traffic controller and see hundreds of flights a day with no problems!! The crew carry out lots of checks before the aircraft takes off, and if there was the slightest hint of a fault they would not go!!

Explain to the crew you are nervous and ask if can pre board, somethimes they may let you go have a look in the flight deck before take off if the pilots are not too busy!! I would suggest an aisle seat as you will not feel as closed in!!! Just before take off get you family to distract you by talking!

Don't drink too much on the flight you will feel worse!! Maybe just one drink to calm your nerves!!

It is more of a risk driving to the airport that flying once you get there!! Have a great time, I will look forward to your report when you get back!!
