Almost 15 months and stil no teeth

My DS is almost 15 months and still does not have any teeth. The Dr had said if there were no teeth by 15 months he would need to go to the dentist to get x-rays to see what was going on. When I mentioned this to my dentist he laughed and said, "What 15 month old do you know that would sit still long enough for an x-ray?" So any DISers have any experience with this? My DD first got her first teeth at 8 months so this is new to me. Thank you!

Our DD was very late as well. The pediatrician told us to mention it to the dentist. The dentist said to give it a few months. By 18 mos she had several teeth.

OTOH, I'm sure you could find a pediatric dentist who could manage an x-ray if you and your pediatrician feel that you should get one. I'm sure that there are occasions when x-rays must be done that young. And it would probably involve you sitting there with holding your DS.

My daughter has had dental xrays ever since she was 14 months old. She just sat in my lap it only takes a second. It didn't seem to bother her she was just curious as to what they were doing so she was occupied.

My daughter had dental xrays at about 2 years due to an injury. We had to go to a pedi-dentist b/c the films at the regular dentist were too big for her mouth. They were able to do it to an injured child.

Been there........mine all got their teeth very late. Two kids got theirs at right around a year, then there was my daughter ~ got her first tooth ONE MONTH before she turned TWO!!! We did do x-rays. And then the only comment from the dentist was "yep, they're in there, just slow coming down". It wasn't worth the expense or worry. By the time she hit 15 months, she had no problem eating anything suitable for a 15 month old. She didn't lose her first tooth until she was 8, but it actually turned out to be a good thing because she has very healthy teeth, no cavities, whereas the others do. I know at the time, it really bothered me. But I can laugh about it now. I was told by one Dr. that there has never been a case where a child never got teeth, if that helps at all.

DD didn't cut her first tooth until after her 12month check up. The dr. wasn't at all worried about her late "toothing". She is just now cutting her "I" teeth and she turned 2 in December. I wouldn't worry.

DS got his first at 14 mos. DD is 9 mos. and no teeth yet. Doctor said it was fine, but I would keep asking.

On the other end of the spectrum our DS had 8 teeth by 7 months old and it was very tough on his breastfeeding mother. There may be some benefits to delayed teething. Better to be bitten in sensitive areas by gums than a mouth full of teeth I would think, but then again I'm the father and not much good at breastfeeding so what do I know?

Our 3 yr old got her first tooth at 16 months and she was perfectly fine. The story goes that the later the child gets teeth, the nicer their teeth will be. Not sure how much truth is in that, but maybe it will make you feel better?

I would not worry!!

My first son had his first tooth by 3month (took him to emergency---Imagine the look that I got from the doctors when they saw this "mad" woman screaming because my baby had a tooth!!!--) by the time he has 1 1/2 he lost his first tooth (another trip to emergency-the nurses still to this day tease me )...He is almost "done" loosing his teeth and he is only 8. My second boy did not have any tooth until he was 19th month(took him to the dentist and he said not to worry that he was "taking his time" ) he is 7 and only lost 1 tooth.He keeps fighting with me to "help him" pull his teeth out so the Tooth Fairy will give him money!!!!
Each child is different, so like I said before: Do not worry!!

My first two were very slow to get their first teeth and my pediatrician laughed at me too and said they don't begin to worry about it until at least 18 months... HTH.

Don't worry too much about it. Every kid is different. Ask your ped about it if your still worried. My daughter had no hair till she was 18 months if it makes you feel better

Thank you for the replies and comments. Some people have looked shocked when they found out he still has no teeth so yes I was starting to worry a little. I always know though where to go for help. Thanks everyone!!

I am a dental assistant and I see all ages of kids with new teeth. One thing that is interesting though, is that the dentist I work for said kids with primary teeth (baby teeth) who grind their teeth at night are probably trying to push the new ones through, thus if your child has all their baby teeth and they don't grind their teeth, maybe their permanent teeth will be slower to come in? He wasn't completely sure (he had read an article on it) so I guess it is just a probable theory. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about your child being late - they will catch up!

Don't worry about the teeth! They will come when they are ready! I am a dentist, DH is a dentist. They will come in when they are ready. Your little one may be way later than normal,but it is exceedingly rare that children have no teeth at all. Unless the little guy has no eyebrows, no hair - things that go hand in hand with no teeth, I wouldn't worry.

If it makes you feel better to have an xray taken, it will only take a second, and might put your mind at ease. I would go to a pediatric dentist to do it. DD sat for a dental xray when she was 2 all by herself - I was checking for missing adult teeth (you can already see them forming above the baby teeth even at 2 years old). I am missing a few teeth myself and wanted to see if she inherited it! She didn't .

In my previous life, I too was a dental assistant. I could tell you not to worry, but you're a Mom so you will anyway. But really don't worry. I have seen 100's of patients and none of them have ever told me that they never got their primary teeth!! They're in there, they're just takling their time errupting. You could go have an x-ray made to ease your mind, but I'd wait on it. Just remember that he will be delayed in losing them since he was late in getting them to begin with.
