Do we REALLY need to hear 3 WEEKS of Elvis on the Today show???!!!!!

Yes I realize that this is sacred territory for some and if I offend you here Im sorry but I just think 3weeks is a little overkill you know what I mean?

Sorry I just had to get that off chest I had to turn off the Today show because I couldnt deal with it anymore and now Im cranky because I love that show

To be honest, Binny, I've got a problem with the whole idea of a popular singer being elevated to Diety status.

I was never an Elvis fan when he was alive, and I haven't grown more fond of him since his death. I try to ignore the hoopla.

I'm right behind you! If I see another Elvis piece I'm going to gag!
LOL

I too am amazed by the attention the anniversary of his death is getting. I realize that Elvis has some very devoted fans but I agree that this publicity is a bit much.

How do you think I feel? My birthday was yesterday. Every year its the same thing at my birthday time - Elvis Elvis Elvis!! Why not have 'Tina Week' on E! instead!!! :p

Try living a half hour from Graceland....there's been articles in the paper about him every day this week.

And seeing all these people..mind you 70,000!!!!!! going through his "shrine" area mourning his death. I was really tired of seeing it on the news this morning also. I mean, HELLO - IS HE YOUR REAL RELATIVE????? Probably not...so WHY ARE YOU STILL CRYING????? I just don't get it. For gosh sakes....it was 25 years ago!!!!! Glad I'm not the only one tired of all this Elvis stuff..and it isn't because I don't like his music...I do like some of his songs but please.....

Me neither. I mean I realize he was important to the musical landscape & all, but geez, the "King" was found with his pants around his ankles, **** up after ODing & falling off his "throne". Not exactly the regal end I'd want to be known for. In fact I think that would almost qualify for a Darwin award, no?

Of course I've never understood the crying fans anyway. Why on earth are they crying if they're watching the band?

If my favorite singer died I would be sad & all, but I wouldn't sit there & cry about his death every year, especially if the simpleton killed himself. Personally I think if people are going to make a huge deal about Elvis, they should also give props to Buddy Holly. I guess I'm on the Don McLain camp on that issue.

I have a very cynical opinion on this:

Elvis's heirs -- Priscilla, and Lisa Marie, are both members of the Church of Scientology. A significant percentage of the revenue from his estate goes to this church (or cult -- take your pick).

This organization has a huge PR machine, and likely has spent a ton on the very publicity everyone is complaining about. It's not as though the suits at NBC (and all the other major networks) all decided that hey, the anniversary of Elvis's death is coming up -- let's bombard the public w/ 3 weeks worth of commemoration. They were paid handsomely to do so. (Does anyone else find it a little too coincidental that Lisa Marie wed Nicholas Cage -- another Scientologist -- in this midst of all this?)

All of the exposure, in turn, will increase tourism at Graceland and create a demand for Elvis memorabilia/products, and thus will generate tons more revenue for the estate -- and Scientology.

I'm not a big Elvis fan, but have respect for his talent and the impact it made on so many people. I think it's fun, but there has been a lot of coverage. I suspect the 26th anniversary of his death will not garner as much air time.

I'm having fun with it. :jester: I only saw one day
of Today coverage-didn't even have time to
sit down and watch much of that but I did get to
see "Jailhouse Rock" the other afternoon.
I'm facinated by those who are facinated with Elvis.
Deity-certainly not...one of this century's most
interesting characters-most certainly!!
;) mimi

I think Elvis was cool, and intend to check out Graceland one day. I really haven't paid much attantion to the coverage this year, so have no rant there.

I agree about Buddy Holly's impact. I went to his grave and to the recording studios in Lubbock when we drove through Texas. I was only 20 at the time, but have always been a music freak.
