Alligators at the Fort

I lived in Florida as a teen for many years. Often we swam in lakes with gators,,all the rivers have gators and we use to swim and ski in the rivers. Now I wouldn't advise mess'n round with any gators, especially if there are babies around. But really,,how often has anyone heard of a gator attack on humans in Florida unless they were provoked ? ? ?

Just curious.
Frank

most of the unprovoked attacked were gators that were fed by humans or humans that decided that sitting on the bank of an isolated lake/river was a good idea at sunrise or sunset...

We have never seen a gator yet in the 9 yrs we have been camping in disney maybe its the time of year we usually go between oct-dec sometimes jan -feb maybe if we went during warmer month we would see them

This was taken at the canal next to the group camping area...this little guy was probably just under 3 foot...

There were several in that particular area....most were very young, 18-24" or so.

Okay...Northerner here.:wave2: I tell ya.....if I ever were to see that I would run as fast as my 50 year old legs would carry me. Then.. I'd change my underwear.

When we go to FW and plan to go to the parks for the day, we get up early. And, it is dark out when I walk the dog. I am always worried about alligators.
Should I be? Do alligators leave the the water for any great distances? Should I really punch an alligator in the eye with my flashlight?

Note-I am not kidding-I know nothing about alligators.

Most gators won't bother you, and are very frightened of people for the most part. They usually don't go for "strolls" on land unless it's mating season - which is over for this year. If you walk your dog in the dark, yes, take a flashlight - just so you can see where you're going;) . Do not walk the dog near the edge of a canal or any body of water, and NEVER attempt to punch an alligator... unless he has a hold of YOU!!

What people don't realize is just how fast a gator is. They can run very fast for short distances - faster than you can. IF.... and this is a very HUGE "IF", you are being chased by a gator, run in a large zig-zag pattern. Gators cannot turn on land very quickly.

That being said, I've been a "regular" at FtW for 34 years and have never seen a gator "on land" in the campground. I have seen them on the other side of the canal behind the 300 loop sunning themselves. But not where the people are.

Me and my dad were camping at the fort and we were riding are bikes over the bridge and we saw an gator pop out of the water

Florida Gators are like that you know.

I love gators:

They used to serve a kick'n alligator spread at Narcoossee's, but not anymore :(

They also had years ago a BBQ sandwich that was a small loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with BBQ meat and the top put back on. Our son's loved that entree for lunch.

Living in Florida I can tell you now you will notice more gators. Our lakes levels are very low so the gators have less places to hide.
A few years ago at FW an animal control officer knocked on a TT and asked if we had seen a large gator walking around... He advised us to stay inside for a while ..Like duh.. We sure a heck weren't going anywhere!!!Never did find out if they caught it. They do trap larger gators and release them else where.
Also spider are a MUCH MUCH bigger problem. My Dog was just bitten over the weekend and is really suffering. My neighbor dog got bitten over 3 months ago and is still be treated weekly by a vet. Always shake out anything you hang out side and always check you shoes..

As a floridian I learned as a little boy to not feed or provoke gators. Gators can run faster than a human for a short distance. If you see one just respect his distance and be calm. They will not come after you unless they have babies, then all bets are off.

Anyway FW will not let the big ones stay around. FW is built on very low land and had gators before FW was there.

Be safe and don't play with the gators. If you want to wrestle one go to Gatorland.
