Allergies in Ports or On Board?

I was wondering if some fellow allergy sufferers could share how their allergies where in Florida, the Ports, and on board the ship? I have a lot of allergies to pollen and dust, cats, and smoke. It is usually under control and always tollerable since I started Zyrtec, but I was wondering if I should expect or plan to have problems with my allergies once I get down there? Right now I live in what is most likely the Allergy capital of the US, haha so anything is probably better than here! I just would like to know if I need to arrange to have Zyrtec with me and refillable.

Actually, I would say quite the opposite, as a seasonal allergy sufferer, I have found the sea air is quite refreshing, and usually lightens the symptoms.

The family did not take any medication and had no issues with pollen while at sea. Also while in Florida, there are different pollen that may not affect you. We use to live in Ohio for many years and I was the one with allergies. In our four years in California, the rest of the family have allergies and I am fine!!! ...

Well, some staterooms on both the Wonder and the Magic are occasionally inhabited by service dogs and their handlers... Any allergies to dogs?

Actually I love all animals, even though I am allergic to some.
Yours is very very adorable by the way. Anyway I will not be in a stateroom I will be in the staff quarters. I start work as a youth counselor in August!

I'd say unless you are allergic to mold (which is awful in tropical zones), you are probably going to be just fine. I had no allergy problems when I lived in Florida (except maybe when the orange blossoms were blooming). My troubles started when I moved to the real allergy capital of the world - Knoxville, TN. The only time we've been first in anything and it has to be a list of cities with the worst air quality. Sigh.

My husband has lots of allergies and has never been bothered in Florida or on any of our cruises. He also has bad asthma and I always thought the humidity was bad for asthma but he breaths better in Florida than here in Iowa. My allergies are worse in the fall and we go to Ft. Lauderdale for the boat show in late Oct. and I love it because I can breath for that week with no sneezing or sniffles. Kathy

I suffered from bad allergies in my home of Arizona, but my 7-month contract on the Wonder was allergy-free. So, hopefully, you will be okay.

PS Are you starting on the Wonder or Magic? I will be working on the Wonder.

I have to agree with everyone else. I have terrible allergies in Arizona, but when I am in Florida they do not bother me. Actually on the boat I didn't take allergy medicine at all. I know a lot of my friends have a problem with the pollen in the spring in Florida but not the rest of the year.

Regardless I always carry allergy medicine because I never know how I will react especially since I cannot control what other people wear and certain purfumes just take me out.

The main thing you have to remember is that as a CM you will have a rather small room and a roommate. If you are allergic to perfume, you may want to tell your roommate so. Also, keeping your room clean will help elliminate most allergy problems. I have never heard of CMs having problems, but I don't really suffer from allergies. And the wonderful crisp sea air actually smells clean compared to land. When I got back to living on land after 3 months on the ship I had problems adapting to pollution and pollen and all that. It took me a couple weeks to re-climatize, so be prepared.

I have both seasonal and enviromental allergies. I noticed that you mentioned dust as one of your allergy problems. If you are allergic to dust, take your medication, just in case. Although the ship and the staterooms are cleaned much more often than the average home, unless they spray for dust mites, they will always be present, in the bed, pillows and carpet, etc., just not as many. Take the medication. Best to be safe rather than sorry!

Haven't been on a cruise but I live on the coast in Florida. I am allergic to most open pollinating flowers..don't know the technical term for this--but it includes azaleas, magnolias, gardenias etc...so much so that for my wedding I had a strict rule that no "smelly" flowers could be used.

That being said--I live on a barrier island walking distance to the beach. Didn't know it at the time we bought our home--BUT we have a gardenia bush outside our front door. Ordinarily I am allergic to it--but with the sea breezes--unless I stick my head in the bush , I have no reaction to it. So you should have no pollen problems unless you go on an excursion that requires you to put your head in a bush

I am also allergic to perfume (those that imitate the scent of any flower). So I echo the suggestions to perhaps check with your roommates to perhaps avoid those on the cruise.

Don't know much about other allergens--but if you are concerned--perhaps bring your own pillow from home (since they probably don't get washed on the ship anyway).

Thanks for all the great tips everyone. I wasn't planning on ditching my meds all together I am going to bring some I just wanted to see if I needed to prepare for more than the normal allergies.
Princess Snow I am still waiting to hear is I am on the Wonder of the Magic, I am just waiting for all my paperwork to go through then I will know for sure.

my sons and I all suffer from seasonal and environmental (dust, mold, mites, etc) and some food allergies. we just stick with our regular regimen of clarinex for me and zyrtec and singulair for them and we never have a problem.

I have many pollen allergies courtesy of the last two states I've lived in However on both occasions I've travelled to the ocean or to Florida my symptoms have dropped off dramatically. Hope thats the case with you
