Has anyone ever tried one of the special cakes you can order at table service restaurants that are for people with food allergies? If so, how was it? The info I received from Brenda says that you can order a 6 inch chocolate or vanilla cake.

I guess it would depend on the allergies.

I have never looked into it as DS is peanut and tree nut allergic and I would imagine that the cakes would still be made in the bakery and have possible cross-contamination.

But I would think they would be able to accomidate a milk or egg allergy without much trouble at all.

What kind of food allergies? Do they sell them for all types and make different cakes or ???

I thinking someone with a peanut allergy could eat a different cake than someone with a milk allergy or celiac, etc.

The information I received from Brenda (in the attachment) states that you can order a six inch chocolate or vanilla cake that is free of wheat/gluten, milk, soy, peanuts, and tree nuts. They must be ordered at least 72 hours in advance of your table service reservation.

That sounds very interesting! Does this mean the peanut free cake is also gluten free - it is all the same cake? And will they personalize it? I realize you may not know the answers to these questions.;)

It sounds like it's just one cake that is supposed to be free of those allergens, but I'm not sure. I'm going to check into it further before I order one.

For my parents' 40th anniversary dinner at CG in 2007, the chef made us a special vanilla cake that was personalized:thumbsup2 . DS has severe allergies to all nuts. He was able to enjoy that dessert with us, which was extremely important to me since he has limited options even at WDW. I called about a week or two in advance. I must say, the cake was delicious! We could not finish the whole thing so we stored it in our room fridge and enjoyed some more the next day.

Thank you for the info, rosegirl! My child is allergic to all nuts also. I'm excited that apparently we will be able to order a cake that is safe for her to eat, since most bakery items are off limits.

It's a 6" cake that's free of all those things. It's made offsite and delivered pre-decorated. It is not personalizable, like the normal 6" cakes.

You can get the same cake at any of the resort restaurants (including quick service) if you order it in advance. The Pop food court told me 48 hours in advance, but they have ways of making things magically appear, so I'd err on the side of 72 hours.

Thanks for the info, Dawn. Have you tasted the cake? If so, what did you think of it? My dd is PA/TNA only, and I'm worried that she will think it tastes "weird" since it is free of the other allergens too.

I'm curious too if you've tasted it cause gluten free things can taste quite a bit different if you're not used to them - and his allergies are peanut/tree nut/shellfish so we don't typically get the gluten free stuff.

I haven't tasted it, but I've been gluten free for 5 years, so I'm probably not a good test case. =)

Before our last trip I emailed and spoke to the chef at LTT because I needed a peanut-free, limited dairy cake for my daughter. She is highly allergic to peanuts. She's not truly allergic to milk and can tolerate milk products in small amounts. The chef was extremely accomodating. The cake was actually very good, but extremely rich, more like a brownie than a cake. When he brought it to our table the chef mentioned it was also gluten free. He gave me the name of the mix they use but I can't remember what it was. So I think they probably do use one particular cake mix that is free from a lot of the common allergans. If you want something peanut-free or milk-free, it's probably going to be gluten-free as well. It tasted a lot better than most of the other gluten-free stuff I've had.

LTT used to use a Pamela's mix that may have been a brownie mix, I think. Currently they use Nameste, for on-site baked chocolate cakes, which tastes to me like any other box cake.
