Hi all-
I have done it - I have convinced DH to fly instead of drive 14 hours.

I have not flown since 1996 and I have never flown with children. We are flying out of Bristol, TN on Allegiant Air.

Can anyone give me some reviews of this airline?

How can I avoid some of their fees?

Do they serve drinks/snacks?

Is there any in-flight movies?

This is my DH's first flight and he is EXTREMELY nervous. Our lovebugs are going to be 5 and 3 on the trip. Any tips/tricks/info is much appreciated.

I'm also a nervous flyer - see a previous post on here entitled "nervous flyer" LOL.

He can go to http://www.fearofflyinghelp.com/ and get some good information about flying, calming nerves, etc. I go through the online course regularly before I fly (I've never paid a penny for it), and it does help some. I'm still nervous, and that's not going to change any at this point for me.

As for Allegiant - I've never flown them - they fly out of Lexington (where I'm from), but only 2 days a week, and we can't fit that into my husband's work schedule, so we're on delta, which better suits our needs.

However, most flights around 2 hours in the air don't have in flight movies - I know I've flown to Florida and back something like 6 or 7 times, and I've never had an in-flight movie.

I'm not sure if they charge for snacks or not (I don't think they do, but it's simple stuff - peanuts, pretzles, cokes). If they do, bring your own (stuff your kids will eat!), and put them in your carry-on. According to the website, you're entitlted to bring one carry-on per person, along with a personal item (backpack, purse, laptop, etc). Food items for immediate consumption are also allowed.

Bring stuff for your kids to do (stuff that's easy to get out and put away), let them each bring their items in a child's sized backpack (if possible). This way they have something to occupy their time with. You can put snacks in each of their bags so that you know there is something they will snack on.

You can stow your stroller as a gate checked item, so you will have it when you disembark from the plane to push the kids in.

Not sure what other fees you are wanting to avoid - but the only other thing I can think of is baggage - I think that's charged based on your fare, but not totally sure.

I flew Allegiant Air out of Lexington, KY once and I was quite happy with them. However, I just received an e-mail saying they will no longer fly into MCO but instead is switching back to Orlando Sanford Airport (SFB) starting Feb 1 2011 so I'm not sure how it will affect you. To answer your question, you can avoid convenient fee if you book your flight at the airport counter instead of online. However, you take the risk of the price changes by the time you get to the Airport to book. Also, make sure you call in advance to check when will their airport counter be open if you want to do that. They are a budget airline and so they do not serve free drinks or snacks but you can purchase them on board. There is no in-flight movies. Enjoy planning your trip !

We fly Allegiant quite frequently and are pleased. They do charge for a lot of extras, but you can opt out of those (except online convenience fee) if you pay attention. Their airplanes are nice enough, but they are more of a regional airline.

They charge for drinks and snacks, so just buy them in the terminal after you go through security. I just got home Friday from Orlando and flew with them, I got online and purchased two more tickets to go down in March with them. Had to call them after I purchased tix with them because of a small problem and their customer service could not have been nicer to me. She was actually kinda funny and that was nice. None of the airlines I have dealt with have 100 percent great customer service all of the time.

We just flew with them in Oct. out of Lex. and had an absolute great trip. Great service and the lady working at the counter goes above and beyond to make sure everything is OK. Hate they are stopping service to MCO.

Keep in mind that if you are flying into Sanford, DME will not be available and you will have to pay for transportation. Either rent a car or arrange for a shuttle/taxi/limo.
