If they run out of overheard space and make you gate-check your carry ons, are they charging you the fee to check them?

From their website:

Bags that are "Gate Checked" will incur a $35.00 fee.

Allegiant doesn't say, unless the plane runs out of overhead space. I'd try to be one of the first people to board.

I had to gate check my bag on my last Allegiant flight because the bins were all full. They did not charge for my bag.

I just heard of Allegiant Air and their prices are great - even with the fees.
I'm flying with my husband, and 3 kids 17, 16 and 12 yrs. old. Can we get by without paying to book our seats? I'm thinking it's a short flight and won't matter too much if we are all together.
From reading these posts it sounds like it might be worth it to pay the $5 priority boarding fee. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help!

Just returned from WI using Allegiant again, I had to gate check my carry on, when asked for a explanation I was told that it was because of lack of space had to pay form my carry on to get checked. Because of my business venture in WI and other underlying circumstances have decided it be best we move back and get it up and running and see what it is like in WI in winter again. I think we will be giving SWA a try.

As of right now, SWA does not fly into WI. Chicago is the closest, until SWA starts flying out of Milwaukee.

We will not be flying Allegiant for December trip. they just posted the prices and they went up a lot from now till then. the sticker shock of 193.00 one way is to much for us plus luggage.

I would wait if I were you. The prices have kept coming down for our trip(flying out of Rockford), we got the travel insurance, so we keep rebooking.
