Hi all, been out of horses for about 20 years. 11 year old daughter has the love for horses and am looking at leasing for right now, cuz not sure if we have time for owning our own. Has anyone done this--pros and cons to it. I am meeting with a person tonight about leasing. Any help or comments are greatly apprieciated. Thanks

i leased horses for a couple years when i was younger. i would just say to make sure the person you are dealing with is reputable and takes good care of their horses. get a specific agreement in writing.

i hope your daughter has fun. :)

I know the person is reputable, and she does take excellent care of her horses. I will for sure get a written agreement. We will have to discuss more in detail tonight. We meet the horse to see if the two are compatable--did you have stipulations when you leased, or did you get free reign (pun ;) ) to do with as you pleased? I am excited about this, and my daughter is too. She was getting tired of the boring trail rides--and I want her to know the love of a horse, cuz they are amazing animals. Thanks for reply. If we do this she will be leasing a unique horse. "Bashkir curly horse". Guess they are suppose to be pretty awesome in themselves. Thanks again.

I did not know you could lease a horse???? I haven't owned one in about 16 yrs and where we live now, there is no room for one :(
I did know you could board a horse, but never knew you could lease one!

I had free reign (LOL) for the length of the lease, but I had to take care of her (basically everything except feeding/watering) too. (not that i minded, LOL).

i suppose there were some stipulations in that i couldn't transport the horse without permission, or stuff like that, but i was able to ride her whenever i wanted to.

Is this a full or partial lease? What expenses in addition to the lease payment are you responsible for (vet, farrier)? Is your DD currently taking lessons and it this horse owned by the barn owner or boarded at the barn? Is she interested in showing? Can the animal be removed from the property, by whom and under what circumstances? What is your liability if the horse is injured? How long is the lease?

Lease situtations can work very well and benefit both parties. Just be sure that your DD's needs are being met and that you are protected!

Caity/caity--thanks again. I will be paying 1/2 of what boarding costs plus lease of tack for horse. I am not responsible for feeding or health of horse. As far as rest of taking care of him, that is the fun part. KathiwithanI, now days you can lease/rent anything if you know right person. Check with stables in area or vets, or put ad out. I think by God's own grace this one just happened to drop into my lap. Sometimes things are just to good to be true, and I am keeping fingers crossed that I'm not dreaming it all up. Thanks much.

Those are very good questions that I am taking with tonight. That is what I wanted to see--this is new to me about leasing and I do want my daughter to be happy as well as owner and horse. :) I do know that everything needs to be in writing for everyones own protection. Thanks for good advice I'm printing it off and taking it with. You sound very knowledgable on this subject. Have you leased out your own to other people or just plain leased one for yourself. I hope this works, cuz I really want her/me to get back into horses again and this will be a good way to find out if we have time for them. Thanks bunches and keep up the good comments and helpful ideas/hints. PS: Yes daughter is in riding lessons/is very used to horses.

Yes, I've been involved in several leasing situations over the years. I've also seen many others. Some worked, some didn't.

Another question to ask, what happens if the horse is injured and unridable for a period of time. If it for more than a couple of days, are you required to continue to pay the lease? Also, what activities may your daughter engage in with the horse. Can she trail ride, must she be supervised for all her rides, is she required to take a certain number of lessons during a month?

I'm curious, why are you paying to lease the horse's tack??

Also, please, please, please...require your DD to wear a properly fitted, approved helmet ALWAYS!!!

jrmasm,

Thanks again--you are loaded with info--I am walking into this blindfolded, so this is great info. I don't have my own tack, so she said I could rent out her's ???? I wasn't sure if this was custom or not--as figure if you lease the horse/I would have thought tack would come with it--?????something I will bring up tonight. Have any more helpful questions send them my way. Thanks
