Disney marathon organizers collected about 30,000 pieces of clothing, which was tossed aside as runners heated up on Sunday during the 26-mile route from Epcot to the Magic Kingdom.
The articles of clothing, which included coats, hats, sweaters, shirts and gloves, will be laundered by Disney and delivered to Central Florida organizations, such as Harvest Time International, Salvation Army and Coalition for the Homeless.
More than 55,000 runners -- a Disney event record -- registered for the weekend events, which included the marathon, a half marathon and a family 5K fun run.
According to Disney, some runners also used marathon weekend as a way to raise funds for charitable causes, including groups of runners that raised $5.4 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Burnham Institutes Team Burnham raised $140,000 for blood cancer research, while two teams from Florida Hospital raised more than $54,200 for the Florida Hospital for Children.
I have never been a runner but decided since this was for a good cause to give it a try, said Samantha OLenick, organizer for Florida Hospitals Females in Training team.
Jay Lumpkins, of Ocoee, won third place in the full marathon with a time of 2:24:24.
A recent cold snap, which brought sleet and snow to Central Florida on Saturday, has caused freeze warnings throughout the region for about the last 10 days.
