While talking to my DFIL today on the phone DH was talking about our trip coming up in Jan that just DH, me and DDs are going on. He really wants to take us to WDW for our next trip in a couple of years.

When he was talking he told my DH that they either already have or are in the middle of planning/building a resort ONSITE specifically for veterans or military people in active duty that would be really nice but really inexpensive for these people. I know that I haven't heard anything yet but he is a veteran, but besides him we don't have any military in the family. Does anyone know what he is talking about??? My DH thought the name had the word "beach" in it.

I'm an ONSITE snob most would say and if we go I've always said I wanna stay onsite so I'm curious if this is true....

Anyone know? Thanks in advance...

The resort is Shades of Green.
Years ago before Disney sold it to the Military it was called Disney Inn. It is a beautiful resort right on the golf course. We stayed there when It was Disney Inn back in !987.

Shades of Green is not for veterans unless they are retired military. I think there might be a few exceptions, like Prisoners of War or something. Unfortunately, ordinary veterans are not included. Employees of the Dept of Defense are, though, as are active military. The price you pay is based on your grade or rank.

I believe the remodeling was two years ago! It is a beautiful resort. It's very peaceful and tranquil. The resort rooms are large and more like a delux category if you ask me. If you are able to stay there, give it a shot! Tink

Thanks for the information. Since it's not one of the "normal" resorts, how would it work with Disney transportation, dining plan, etc???

WE stayed there 10/29/5 - 11/3/5.
My DD is AFR.
It is a beautiful resort.
Very reasonable rates for a deluxe resort
They have their own transportation.
You can also use Disney transportation.
Disney extra hours can be used.
You can not use Disney Magical express.
Check it out they have a web-site.
Shades of Green.
Doesn't have the Disney theme.
That is the only thing missing.

We'll be staying at SOG during our upcoming trip to WDW. My SIL has stayed there before after the remodeling and she said it was beautiful. They also went during the remodeling and they didn't have a room for them, so they ended up putting them up at the Contemporary for the same price. :earseek:

Anyway, when i return i'll post up some pics of the rooms and some thoughts of the resort as a whole.

I stayed there for my first ever WDW trip because my BIL is active military. This was before the remodeling and since we had nothing to compare it too, we had no complaints about it. We still got all the perks of staying onsite, so that was a plus too. And we were able to purchase discounted park tickets at the resort.

If you can stay there, I think it's worth the savings.

It is a beautiful resort! The rooms are larger than many of Disney's deluxe resorts and average approx. $100/night (might be more or less depending on the sponsors rank). Click here to go to their website.

We have stayed there many times and it is wonderful. They built a new wing in the renovation which is lovely. There are three reasonable restuarants too. They even have a pool in the shape of mickey ears. The suites are great and for $200 a night the cheapest suite on property.
