ALL CANADIAN DISNEY STORES TO CLOSE

I was in Masonville Place in London Ont yesterday and the Disney store there is open and right now no signs saying it’s closing.
The Malls just opened in Ontario like a week ago though...

Yeah so far the Edmonton stores are all saying they haven't heard anything yet. I finally saw the big screen showing clips again, but it wasn't keyed with the music played in the store quite yet. I really hope our shops can stick around- maybe the WEM location as a "signature" given the bragging rights of having stores here.

In Ontario the store is operating as usual as well, (with the the difference that it’s actually open of course as everything was closed the longest here) no store closing sales and they don’t even know yet they are closing. We asked.

As an Edmontonian, I've been anxiously watching for news, either good or bad, about the future of our two stores, but have seen nothing. I have read conjecture that the WEM location may stay open for, as you put it, bragging rights, but nothing definite.

If you haven't seen it, you will find the following 7 minute video interesting. It came out the day of the Retailer Insider announcement. The video is by a WEM vlogger, who also happens to be a Disney nut.

Yep, that's the video I saw that clued me into it- it was on the Edmonton Reddit. I just find it super-weird that in the several months since then, Disney has remained so tight-lipped.

Any update on sales in BC?

I was at Metrotown earlier this week and it was 40% . Lots of kids things left but adult sizes were very limited to larger sizes. I bought a Beauty and the Beast throw blanket and my eldest daughter got a pin. They were giving out Cruella Keyes with purchases.

Metrotown and Guildford are now out of stock and closed. Don't know about Pacific Center.

Has anyone been to the Ottawa store lately?
We are planning a short trip there next week and I would love to bring the kids there, but not sure whether it’s still worth it…

I don't think anyone posted a link to the follow-up story that appeared on the Retailer Insider website a month ago, when the closing of the three BC stores was announced:

Disney closing all BC stores as Phase 1 of Canadian Exit

A couple of sentences in this story caught my attention:

It would be highly unlikely that Disney would choose to only exit British Columbia which means that the next phase of store closures will likely soon be revealed for both Alberta and Manitoba.

One source noted that several of the Canadian Disney store units, including the CF Toronto Eaton Centre and West Edmonton Mall locations, were among the company’s top-selling stores.

The second quote gives me a glimmer of hope that at least a couple of Canadian stores may remain open. Although, if true, I would have thought that Disney would have allowed one BC store to remain, too, since I'm almost certain that combining all BC business into one location would have been a profitable move.

Anyway, at this point I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that, at a minimum, the Edmonton WEM and Toronto Eaton Centre locations remain open.

Well, so much for the power of positive thinking. Yesterday Disney announced the closing (on or before August 18th) of the following stores:

ALBERTA
- both Calgary stores
- both Edmonton stores

MANITOBA
- Winnipeg

ONTARIO
- Hamilton
- London
- New Market
- Ottawa
- Dufferin Street, Toronto

This leaves three Canadian store locations open, all in Ontario: Scarborough, Yonge Street Toronto, and Vaughn.

Just sent a message to DD to watch for the Edmonton stores. That makes me sooo sad. I was really really hoping the West Ed location would stay.:sad:

Of course once we actually have money and a grand daughter to take into the stores they close

Aw, MAN! I was really hoping against hope they'd at least leave the WEM store open! It was such a busy place, and apparently the #1 store in Canada in terms of business!

This really sucks- they'd only FINALLY just started showing videos and stuff on their wall (I always thought it was dumb they'd turned it off in the first place). It was the only place you could go that played Disney music in the store as well. I really liked a lot of the staff (though many of them had moved on as the years went by- I never did find out what happened to a couple of them. We'd talked almost every time I went in there and then I just never saw them again!).

I mean... I'd bought as much stuff as I think I needed, and I found the experience getting a LITTLE weaker with time... but holy cow I'll miss the ambiance and feel of the place. It was a "Park" away from the Parks. And I hate the notion of using their online stores- it'll be so expensive and hard to find certain things. I'll never be able to inspect the stuff in close again and pick the best one.
