All about the Autotrain

I got the same email. We go out at the current time of 5 pm on Nov 7 and come back at the new (i.e. old) time of 4 pm.

My oberservation is that the 5 pm didn't actually result in a lot more time, as they tried to board early anyhow.

It shouldn't have made any difference as the departure and arrival times were still the same length apart. What they may have been trying to do is avoid some freight trains and commuter trains. Currently the train departs at 5 and arrival is 10 am. Update is departs at 4 and arrival is 9 am so the same length of time for the trip and is what it used to do. Trains have also typically left 15-30 min earlier than scheduled for as long as we've been riding (since 2005). They've always boarded about 90 minutes before scheduled departure time.

We went out both ways mid September, left early both times, arrived early both times, waited for station to open both times. That only happened once during the earlier time over the last 15 years for me. The stations can now open an hour earlier also now, like they used to, im guessing, so maybe the employees will like it too.

What I meant was that even when it switched to 5 pm, we still arrived at the same time as we do for a 4 pm departure, around 11:30 am. So did everyone else who wants to get their preferred dinner slot. We did what we always do, which is check in, get boarding passes and dinner ressie, and then go out again for lunch. They said that although the drop dead deadline was 3, they wanted everyone back by 2 because they were hoping to go out early. And then they pulled out around 4:20. (This was in April).

So when we go down on the 5:00 on November 8, we will arrive at exactly the same time as we do when we go back at 4 on November 16. Sorry I wasn't clear!

We live 45 min from Lorton so we go around noon and either buy lunch or take something from home. As for dinner reservations we've always done second seating, but we may do first on our next trip. Once we arrive we wait in the station so have never been told when to be back. We've done around a dozen rt's. We were on in Jan and while we left around 445, we were late getting in on both ends. We buy priority offload so we only wait a few minutes once they start calling.

We left Lorton on 31 Oct. Incoming train didn't arrive until 130 so we were late leaving. We left our house at 130 knowing we'd have to wait in line. We arrived, made the u-turn and were in the far right lane approaching the station at the traffic light just south of the station. We were told by an employee that anyone past the turn lane had to leave and return 1.5 hours later (4 pm). We went to Panera as a lot of people did. We went back just over an hour later and were able to get into the turn lane, but then he directed us around the traffic to the parking lot. When we got there another employee started handing out car #'s. We were priority #30. My husband came in with me, checked in and then went out and waited with the car until they had him drive the car into the canopy area. All the cars in the lot had to wait until the last car had been checked in at the gate which to me was weird since we were there long before a lot of those cars, but anyway, that was around 530. Train loaded at 620, we left around 730 and arrived in Sanford around 2. Sanford had checked in cars prior to our arrival and had them parked in parking areas and then they stopped that check in process when we arrived. We were on the road about 240. There were over 500 people onboard (completely full train) and the last car probably wasn't called until at least 430-445. Priority is so worth it. We buy it every trip now. Anyway, both trains are delayed. They will have to make some adjustment in order to change to the 4 pm departure. My guess is they will cancel trains if they're still running late in order to do so. BTW, Persimmon rd is closed at 1st st for construction so you can't come in or exit that way. We went to 2nd and went out that way to get to 17/N. French and then to 417 to 528 to head to Canaveral. Long day and we both slept over 9 hours last night. Spent the day in Canaveral today, mostly relaxing. Boarding Wonder of the Seas tomorrow for 2 weeks.

How do you book One Way on Auto Train? If I use the One Way tab, it won't let me do Auto Train. If I use the Auto Train tab, it won't let me do One Way.

That's what I am doing. Doesn't work on Desktop (Edge and Chrome browsers) or Chromebook. I even got in a chat yesterday and finally gave up on that as well. Cleared cookies too. Won't let me switch directions either (thinking about driving down and coming back on the train).

Have you tried the Amtrak mobile app?

For what it's worth, I just tried it in Chrome.

Had One Way selected with SFA to LOR. The Return Date field was still on the screen, but when I populated the Depart Date field (leaving the Return Date field blank), the Find Trains button lit up an I was able to click it

Well, I did it! I booked the northbound train for Dec. 12, roomette. I have no idea what I am doing at this point so have to go back and read through. I've been told that it is easier to manage a backpack than a small carry-on because of the narrow stairs. Stairs??? Okay, I have a lot to learn and very little time to learn it! Any quick tips and tricks you folks can offer will be much appreciated.

All of the train cars for the auto train are two levels and you can be on either the lower or upper level. There is no option to select upper or lower when booking a private room (unlike coach seats where you have to select either upper or lower). If you have a preference, maybe call Amtrak and see if they can do anything.

Do read up on the roomette. They are on two levels as erionm said. The space is VERY small, especially when the beds are down. The backpack will be much more flexible than a small carry on in the available space. There are more bathrooms per room on the lower level of the Autotrain. The stairs are narrow and winding but you will have to use them anyway to get to meals - which are all on the upper level. I hear that it is a quieter ride on the upper level but can't assure you of that because we need a handicapped room on the lower level. We live in Maryland and love taking the train and avoiding the 900 mile road trip. Let me know if you have more questions.

I found plans of the trains and my room will be on the bottom level. No middle-of-the-night steps to deal with. So okay, here are some questions.

Do people actually change into pjs?
Do people use the shower? (I shower every morning, just not sure how I feel about that on the train.)
Can you safely leave your belongings in the room when you go to eat?
Who gets tips and how much is standard?
How do I disable my car alarm? (I have asked people and reasearched online. The answers have to do with the key fob and how to use it to make the alarm stop when it goes off. But Amtrak says to disable the car alarm and I can find no information about that.)

We do change into pjs. The shower room has enough space for you to do that comfortably - once the beds are down, the roomette will not have enough room. However, we have found that the shower room is not often occupied.
Can't answer your question about the shower because we do not use it. We just wait to get to our hotel. We also have our meals delivered because my husband is handicapped and we are in the handicapped room. I would take any valuables with me to dinner, but I have NEVER, in 20+ trips, seen anyone open a roomette door belonging to another traveler.
We tip the porter when we leave because we do require more attention than regular travelers because of the handicapped needs. For good service $20. We have found the porters (attendants) so very helpful, even with a full train and many beds to make up and take down.
I hope someone else has an answer to your car alarm question.

Do people actually change into pjs? I presume folks do what they do at home...we slept in shorts & T-shirts
Do people use the shower? (I shower every morning, just not sure how I feel about that on the train.) We didn't, but we did see folks who did.
Can you safely leave your belongings in the room when you go to eat? We did, had no problem. Might I suggest packing very light? Those roomettes are small, especially when the beds are down. We brought a backpack and a small cooler w/ wine & water and that's it. My husband is 6'2" and I'm 5'0" and it was a tad cramped.
Who gets tips and how much is standard? We tipped $30 each time to the attendant when we departed the train

I change into a tshirt but we do bedrooms now. In a roomette I used to wear shorts also. The only things I don't leave in my room are cash, jewelry and passports (we usually are cruising). I do leave my laptop in it's bag and never had any issues. We don't use the shower in our room as at each end we're either heading home or to a hotel. We live 45 min from the Lorton station and normally are traveling to Cape Canaveral when in FL. Most cars now do not need their alarms disabled because the windows are left down and the cars are unlocked while being transported. My 14 year old Highlander has the system like most that unless the car is locked, the alarm isn't armed. Cars with aftermarket alarms need to be disarmed. So, no reason to even worry about it otherwise.

Thank you for the info about the windows being down. Never thought that would be something they would do. Now, do you carry an extra set of keys with you just in case they lose your keys?
