Aliens, F&W waddle & food porn-Oct2014 BCV & 1st time DCL (Updated 19Apr2015)

(Continued from previous post 2)

Of course we had to stop and get a pic at this spot. It holds fond memories for DW and I. On a previous trip we were getting our pic made here and the PhotoPass CM asked us to kiss. As I was getting my PP+ card scanned, I leaned in and told him that he really shouldn’t ask a brother and sister to kiss. His face was a Kodak worthy moment. This CM didn’t ask us to kiss…my reputation precedes me?

We made a quick stop by the room for a bio-break and decided we would walk over to play miniature golf at Disney’s Fantasia Gardens. It is located across the road behind the Swan resort. Most people do not know these are nearby and even fewer ever go there. There are two 18 hole courses – the Fairways course and the Gardens course. We decided to take on the Fairways course. This is not your local miniature golf course. There are no windmills or clowns. This is a real miniature golf course with sand traps (fake) and water holes! Here are some pics

I was so close

It was a bit warm but we had a good time. DS1 had the only hole-in-one for the day on a 94’ putt. He ended up beating me by 2 strokes. We won’t say anything about DW’s score.

Another quick walk back to the room to freshen up and we are off to our ADR at ‘Ohana!

(Continued in next post 3)

(Continued from previous post 3)

This is a first for us. ‘Ohana is located in the Polynesian resort and serves a Hawaiian style cuisine. It’s a fixed price, all you can eat, family style restaurant where the food is brought to your table. You MUST get reservations because this place is very popular. Even with ADRs, we had to wait for about 30 minutes in the lobby. Once we were seated, we had a decent view

‘Ohana has a very limited menu. There are only 11 items including the bread and child’s dessert but if you do something right, you don’t have to have a lot of options and ‘Ohana does this right! First up is bread and a lettuce wrap

The next appetizers are honey coriander chicken wings and pork fried dumplings

The main entrée options are cooked on a huge open grille

The entrees are brought to your table on these long skewers and you tell the CM how many pieces you want to try. Our first option was Szechuan sirloin steak

Next up was sweet and sour pork loin but I didn’t get a picture of this option on the skewers

And the final option is grilled peel-n-eat shrimp

Oh yeah…you also have side dishes of egg noodles in a teriyaki sauce and stir fried vegetables

And to finish off this culinary exploration is ‘Ohana bread pudding served a la mode with bananas, vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce

As I said earlier, this is a family style restaurant and during the meal some of the CM’s went around and gathered kids to teach them to hula and perform a sing-a-long. Good food and entertainment, what more could you ask for?

To say we ate a lot would be an understatement. DW paced herself but DS1 and I made so much of a pig of ourselves, I’m surprised they didn’t put an apple in our mouth and put us on a spit! :scared1: OMG we were full! We literally and I mean literally waddle moaned to the car. You know what a waddle moan is…you have eaten so much that you cannot walk right and you’re moaning because you more stuffed than a turkey at Thanksgiving! My rating for ‘Ohana…

A

The food was great and even though it wasn’t a buffet, it was all you can eat…or it was all we could eat! The only reason ‘Ohana did not get an A+ is the price. It was $38 per adult for the meal which is a little high for a limited menu but we made up for the limited menu quantity with the amount we ate quantity and we did get a TIW discount so that helped. If you haven’t tried ‘Ohana, you really should. On a side note, DS1 called me about 3 months after this trip to say he and DDiL had been to a restaurant in Knoxville, TN that obviously tried to copy ‘Ohana. He said it was good but it didn’t come close to how good the meal was at ‘Ohana.

I’m not sure how I was able to drive back to BCV without suffering from food coma but we arrived and promptly fell in bed. So endeth this day. Tomorrow we head back to EPCOT for more F&W, a beverage seminar, a massage for DW and a culinary demonstration. Stay tuned.

Great updates, Bill. I think the DIS is slower in general because of the new format.

We had a few of the things you had at Food & Wine -- the belgian waffle, the scallop, the kielbasa...we loved it all. Mark got so hooked on that Grapefruit Beer that we now keep a 6 pack in the house for him. :)

I love Miniature Golfing at Disney. We've not been to that particular course since 2008. I think we are due back for a visit.

I am so glad you enjoyed your meal at Ohana. I wish we would have. :( It was tied with Whispering Canyon Cafe's dinner (and Hollywood & Vine) for the worse meal we have ever had at Disney. We won't go back. But I know a lot of people love it and I'm glad you got it on a good night. Actually Mark would go back...but just for the dessert.

I didn't remind him when we were getting on the ride that I told him to take his hat off...I wanted to say it but I didn't!

I imagine he remembered! And while that may have added to the crankiness, in that you were right, it makes it an even more memorable lesson lol.

Brazil – Tilapia with coconut lime sauce & steamed rice

Belgium – Potato & leek waffle with beer braised beef

2 of my favorites

Japan – Spicy hand roll with tuna, salmon & Kazan volcano sauce

I had this on my trip with Mary Ellen and meant to get it again this trip...fail. It is sooo good!

Also from Germany – A beer flight that included a pilsner, colonia (blond ale), palor (English style pale ale) and a grapefruit beer - It's 5 o'clock somewhere, right?!

Yes, especially during food and wine!

Africa – Beef tenderloin tips Berbere-style with okra, jalapenos, tomato & pap and South African bobotie with turkey & mushrooms

Two others we enjoyed

We didn’t get anything at the Craft Beer pavilion but here is the options

That's because there were far more interesting options at the kiosks! We were super disappointed at the "craft" beer pavilion. Granted a lot had to do with the fact that nary a single IPA was present.

To say we ate a lot would be an understatement. DW paced herself but DS1 and I made so much of a pig of ourselves, I’m surprised they didn’t put an apple in our mouth and put us on a spit! :scared1: OMG we were full! A

I am shocked you'd not eaten there before. Ohana is a food coma inducing delight.

First off we tried a FEW of the fares offered at the kiosks…

Brazil – Crispy pork belly with black beans, tomato & cilantro and Tilapia with coconut lime sauce & steamed rice

This was actually one of my favorites! I'd never had pork belly and honestly thought it would be more like Chitlins...my country Southerness coming out!! I was happily surprised!

Also from Germany – A beer flight that included a pilsner, colonia (blond ale), palor (English style pale ale) and a grapefruit beer - It's 5 o'clock somewhere, right?!

DW NEVER drinks beer but I got her to try the grapefruit beer and she actually liked it.
I love the grapefruit beer!! I discovered this in 2012 at F&W and I have been hooked! I'm not a bug beer drinker either and can be quite picky!

I keep planning mini-golf but never make it. It is on my list for September. I can't convince Keith so I am hoping I can convince my aunt and uncle along with Madison to join in.

Ohana!!!!!!! Oh my we ALWAYS eat too much here! It is our must do every trip! As a matter of fact, the ADRs can be so difficult to get that if we just suggest a possible trip, I make an ADR and later cancel if we decide to change the dates. Needless to say...we are going in May!!!

BTW: I am actually going to try and update/finish my TR of you are interested in looking in!

We had a few of the things you had at Food & Wine -- the belgian waffle, the scallop, the kielbasa...we loved it all. Mark got so hooked on that Grapefruit Beer that we now keep a 6 pack in the house for him. :)
I haven't found anything at F&W that we didn't like but then I will eat anything that won't eat me first!!

I love Miniature Golfing at Disney. We've not been to that particular course since 2008. I think we are due back for a visit.
This was a first for us. It is one of the many things that WDW offers that most people never see. The advantage of going to WDW multiple times is that you have already done all the main attractions numerous times and begin to find all the less attended things that are really great too.

I wish you'd give both 'Ohana and WCC another chance. We haven't tried H&V but have really enjoyed the other two. Our only bad experience at a restaurant has been Cape May Cafe and once we have gone through our bucket list of all the other restaurants we will give it another chance.

I imagine he remembered! And while that may have added to the crankiness, in that you were right, it makes it an even more memorable lesson lol.
I'm sure it was a memorable lesson...even though he's 30 years old! It's amazing how smart parents get as the child gets older...but don't tell my dad I said that!! :lmao:

That's because there were far more interesting options at the kiosks! We were super disappointed at the "craft" beer pavilion. Granted a lot had to do with the fact that nary a single IPA was present.
I didn't notice that because we weren't buying but it is a huge oversight on their part.

I am shocked you'd not eaten there before. Ohana is a food coma inducing delight.
As many times as we have been to WDW in the past few years, there are still quite a few restaurants we have not tried yet...especially at the resorts. 'Ohana is one we will definitely try again (after I've lost a few pounds in preparation!)

DW NEVER drinks beer since our first date (another story for another time in a less public forum :scared1:) but she actually liked this one.

We really enjoyed it and will go back again. It's a nice break from going commando at the parks.

It was definitely packed and I was surprised at the wait before being seated when we had ADR's. We will go again at some point, especially if DS1 is with us. He still raves about it.

BTW: I am actually going to try and update/finish my TR of you are interested in looking in!
You know I will!! I'm looking forward to it. One day we'll have to schedule trips that overlap. BTW, we're going in December, 2015 & April, 2016...hint hint!

You are so good remembering to take pictures of all your F&W yummies. I really failed in October. So I really enjoy seeing all the fun food they have there. I still haven't tried that scallop. But I keep going back for the hand roll. That is totally my favorite.

I really enjoyed the beer flights. They were fun, especially since they got rid of the 12 ounce serving size. I have to say that I was really disappointed with this. I think it was the most cost effective drink for F&W and they took it away. WTH (heck)???? I am sure it was to make more $ and it irritated me. So Denny and I ended up buying beer from Germany and from England. I love the grapefruit beer, but I have to say that the stella in England is my go to liquid refreshment.

I love that you guys played miniature golf. I have never done that and I always say I am going to. Maybe this summer?

You took great pictures at Ohana. I haven't been there in years. I am always so full by the time that the shrimp comes around that I eat maybe 3. The last time I was there the meal was so long I decided not to go back for awhile, but your pictures make me want to go back NOW! Plus you had a fabulous view. I have always got seated in the middle of the restaurant with no view. Glad you enjoyed it so much, even though you were literally stuffed by the end of the meal. :rotfl:

I didn't remember to take pictures during our trip in 2012 to F&W so I was determined to do it when we returned in 2013. I still missed a few because the food is so good and it's hard to wait for a pic before we dig in!

As I stated previously, Grace doesn't like beer so our first F&W the cerveza consumption was very limited but with DS1 joining us this trip, I had an excuse to imbibe a bit more. Now if I can get my DSiL to join us for F&W, he's very suds savvy and will join me in a drink-around-the-world trip while DW and DD get a massage!

It was fun and a welcome respite from the hectic crowds at the parks.

I have not been that full in a very long time. I was almost embarrassed from how much we ate....almost!

Still catching up- I'm on your HS/MGM day.

Your morning pictures at the BC are stunning. I also want to comment about how rare the back entrance photo of the BC you have is. There is not a single person in it. I have seen many pictures of this area and there is always at least one person in there. No matter what time of day.

Nice description of the potential changes over there. It will be interested to see what, and how quickly new or expanded attractions appear.

All of the ride pictures at ToT and RnR are hilarious! Love the guy who appears that he is trying not to hurl.

I remember reading about the FP experiment at ToT. Really not fair to guests who did not have FP for the ride and so couldn't go on that day.

We have not eaten at the California Grill- wow, the view and the food both look excellent!

:goodvibes:

So sorry to hear about your crowded day at MK that stared with rude people on the bus (or at least shifty) and included rude people on the TTA!

Your pictures of New Fantasyland are great! I haven't been over to Gaston's Tavern but that area looks so cool.

Awesome ballroom pictures at Haunted Mansion!

Sorry to hear your son lost his hat. And you don't even have that one last picture since the Memory Maker photo didn't get included in your pass.

Despite the distracting family, you still got great pictures of Tomorrowland from the Peoplemover. I can't believe the TTA kept malfunctioning. I'm glad you got on during one of the times it was running.

Love your pictures on Buzz.

I so need to get to Disney in the fall. I want to be there then more than during Christmas. The festive harvest decorations, Food & Wine, MNSSHP.

************************************************************************

Your Teppan Edo experience sounded stellar! Great food, lots of moonshine-er- sake and entertainment.

Was SAB even open when you went for your swim? Where was everybody? Looks like an amazing time for a dip.

************************************************************************************

Your next day was certainly a great food day. Every single offering from F&W looked amazing. Like you, there is not much I will turn down for food. I'm not a huge fan of kimchee, but I have heard many say that one of the F&W offerings with kimchee is a favorite, so I would probably even try that. I would have a lot of trouble not sampling everything, at least until I run out of $$$.

Good thing you worked off the samplings with a heated game of mini-golf!

So you could stuff at Ohana. I'm not sure I have ever walked out of a meal that was so good feeling so bad as after Ohana! We have only been once and we were super tired that night (the last night of a very active trip). We haven't been back, but my son Ben really wants to return. The lettuce wraps are new since our dinner there- it was salad before.

****************************************************************************************

I did it!!! Caught up!

Of course, I did nothing else today but DIS, but there is always tomorrow to run errands.

:rolleyes1

Great Ohana review! We are doing a WDW day after our Dantasy cruise next month and I snagged a reso- will see if we keep it. If we are sick of food after the cruise maybe not, but I read the reviews and soo want to try it. Although with the Canadian dollar ASA bad as it is, kinda pricey for 1 meal

Thanks. We noticed that it was real quiet that day too.

Nice description of the potential changes over there. It will be interested to see what, and how quickly new or expanded attractions appear.
Supposedly there is some kind of big announcement coming up with the start of Star Wars weekends in mid-May. We shall see if this is big news are all hype!

All of the ride pictures at ToT and RnR are hilarious! Love the guy who appears that he is trying not to hurl.
I just wonder if he wasn't pretending! :scared1:

I remember reading about the FP experiment at ToT. Really not fair to guests who did not have FP for the ride and so couldn't go on that day.
My thoughts exactly. For those that did not know about FP or were locals making a last minute decision to go to DHS, they were out of luck!

We have not eaten at the California Grill- wow, the view and the food both look excellent!:goodvibes:
A first for us as well. We will make a return trip...once we've visited everywhere else!

So sorry to hear about your crowded day at MK that stared with rude people on the bus (or at least shifty) and included rude people on the TTA!
I guess it takes all kinds of people to make this world. :confused3

Your pictures of New Fantasyland are great! I haven't been over to Gaston's Tavern but that area looks so cool.
WHAT?!?! You still have been there? Tsk, tsk, tsk :rotfl2:

Awesome ballroom pictures at Haunted Mansion!
Thanks. Those did turn out okay. Is it sad that you hope a dark ride breaks down while you are on it so you can get better pics? :crazy2:

Sorry to hear your son lost his hat. And you don't even have that one last picture since the Memory Maker photo didn't get included in your pass.
I'll bet the ride pic had his hat flying off and MM purposefully did not include that pic! That would've been great!! I would have had that pic printed off, framed and given it to him for his birthday...a year or two later after he had gotten over his "loss" but it still would've been neat! :cool1:

Despite the distracting family, you still got great pictures of Tomorrowland from the Peoplemover. I can't believe the TTA kept malfunctioning. I'm glad you got on during one of the times it was running.
It has been years since we were on the Peoplemover and they almost ruined it for us. We'll have to try again in December.

Love your pictures on Buzz.
Awww thanks ma'am :thanks:

I so need to get to Disney in the fall. I want to be there then more than during Christmas. The festive harvest decorations, Food & Wine, MNSSHP.
This year would be a good year to go from 11/01-11/08. You could get MNSSHP, F&W and MVMCP all in one week's stay!

Your Teppan Edo experience sounded stellar! Great food, lots of moonshine-er- sake and entertainment
This was our second dining experience during F&W (the other was the Italian Regional Luncheon) and both were fantastic.

Was SAB even open when you went for your swim? Where was everybody? Looks like an amazing time for a dip.
That was odd, wasn't it? It wasn't that late at night but there was hardly anyone there. :thumbsup2

Your next day was certainly a great food day. Every single offering from F&W looked amazing. Like you, there is not much I will turn down for food. Since the price of most F&W kiosk dishes is around $3-$5, one can get a LOT of food and try a LOT of different cuisines for not that much money.

Good thing you worked off the samplings with a heated game of mini-golf!
I wish I had worked off more of those samplings! I think I gained 10 pounds that week!

So you could stuff at Ohana. I'm not sure I have ever walked out of a meal that was so good feeling so bad as after Ohana! We have only been once and we were super tired that night (the last night of a very active trip). We haven't been back, but my son Ben really wants to return. At first I thought it might be a bit pricey for the limited menu but we sure got our money's worth and it was very good food too!

I did it!!! Caught up!

Why thank you ma'am! We did this trip after a 3 night cruise on the Dream and as you can tell, it didn't stop us at all from eating!

I see you're from British Columbia area. We will be in Vancouver in August for a night before our Alaska cruise and then again for a night after we return. Any tips on places to see or things to do while in Vancouver?

I happened to be scrolling through an older post on my ABD TR and saw this link had appeared in your signature! Sorry I missed the start, but wanted to let you know I am hear. Now to get caught up...Back to the beginning I go!!!

THURSDAY - 09OCT2014

Today is another laid back day. We do have plans but no FP+ reservations. DW is set to get a massage at the Yacht Club/Beach Club Ship Shape Spa. While she is getting her massage, DS1 and I will go to the Festival Welcome Center for a beverage seminar featuring the Einstök Brewery from Iceland. Afterwards, we will meet up and visit a few more F&W kiosks and then attend a culinary seminar later that day.

After sleeping in, again, we stopped at the BCV Marketplace for a quick breakfast. No pics here. As previously stated, it’s good, it’s quick and it’s on site. What else do you need?

DW made her way to the Ship Shape Spa for her massage. This spa does not advertise well at all that it offers massages and facials in addition to exercise facilities. Our last two stays at BCV or BWV, DW has walked to the Mandara Spa located at the Swan & Dolphin for a massage. This is much closer, especially when staying at the BCV and according to DW, the massage was just as good if not a little better than what she has experienced at Mandara. No pics from the spa but they do offer a DVC discount.

As she was getting her massage, DS1 and I made our way to the Festival Welcome Center. Along the way, we passed a familiar site

While in Canada, why not sample a couple of dishes – Seared rainbow trout with bacon and the famous wild mushroom beef filet mignon with truffle butter sauce from Le Cellier

And why not stop at the Refreshment Port for the croissant doughnut with cinnamon sugar affectionately known as the cronut

Next up from Greece is the chicken gyro with tzatziki sauce

DS1 and I finally make it to the Festival Welcome Center, hopefully successfully nourished in preparation for our beverage seminar

(Continued in next post)

(Continued from previous post)

F&W offers numerous beverage seminars. A wine, beer, tequila, bourbon, sake or some other adult beverage company will sponsor a seminar and provide samples of their wares. This particular seminar is sponsored by Einstök (pronounced eens-took) Brewery from Iceland.

They make only 3 products on a regular basis and then make 2 or 3 seasonal beers during the year. Their beer is not offered in all states within the US yet but if you see this at your local bar, you know they have it in stock

Our host for this seminar is Jack Sichterman. Jack is originally from the US but now lives in Iceland and is the co-founder of the brewery.

Today we will be sampling their 3 regular products. The White Ale

The Pale Ale

And the Toasted Porter

Not that many will care about my opinion on beer but IMO, the white ale was clean, not strong and no after taste. The pale ale was a bit hoppy and had a toffee flavor. The toasted porter was roasty smooth. I know any beer aficionado will cringe at my terminology but it is what it is and I liked all three, especially the white ale.

I like these seminars. Last year DW and I attended one on cheese. They start in price at $12/person and go up depending on the seminar. This one was $13/person. Three beers for $13? I consider that a bargain by Disney price standards!

(Continued in next post 2)

(Continued from previous post 2)

After the seminar on foreign beverages (doesn’t that make it sound much better than a couple of guys getting a few brewskies?), DS1 and I stopped to get a pic. I told him we need to look as if the adult beverages had taken their toll

I don’t think we captured the moment very well.

We stagger…er…stroll back to the room and wait for DW to return and clean up after her massage. We sit on the balcony. We nap (no…not pass out). We watch some TV. At some point, in the wee hours of the afternoon, we are ready to head back to EPCOT. We are attending a culinary demonstration back at the Festival Welcome Center. I won’t bore you with some of the same pictures I took earlier today. These culinary demonstrations feature a chef from a well-known restaurant, a representative from the winery, brewery or distillery and are normally hosted by Pam Smith. Pam has been on numerous cooking & health TV shows, has her own line of spices, consults with major food chains, is a wellness/menu coach to professional athletes and is a RD and LDN. She has been hosting F&W events since its inception. Some of the featured chefs from the past few years include Robert Irvine, Jamie Deen, Cat Cora and Bryan Voltaggio. Today it was Rock Harper from Willie’s Brew and Que in Washington, DC. The adult beverage sponsor is Full Sail Brewing Company from Oregon. Here they are

As with all seminars and demonstrations, the host and sponsors give you all the details about their company and restaurant. These demonstrations also start at $12/person and include a dish prepared by the featured chef and ample pours of the adult beverage. Soft drinks and water are also available for those in attendance. Today, Chef Harper is preparing skirt steak sliders with green sauce. There are cameras over the preparation and cooking area that project the activity onto two big screens so you can follow along.

And the finished product

This demo was $13/person and not a bad price for what you receive. In addition, they give you written directions to take with you
