Okay.
So now that I'm awake, I can type up a review :]
As I said before, I adored this movie. It was everything I had waited for and more. The beginning of the movie is gorgeous, and Mia Wasikowska plays the PERFECT Alice. Seriously, everything about her was spot on Alice grown up.
I really enjoyed the backstory with her father, and her "6 impossible things", it really brought some depth to a character who has always been so one-dimensional.
Johnny as the Mad Hatter was fabulous and unpredictable. One second he'd be carefree and well, mad!, and the next he would have an angry, war-ready Scottish accent. He and Alice's brotherly/sisterly type relationship was really cute.
HBC was fabulous as the Red Queen, I loved her interpretation!
Anne Hathaway also played her role excellently. A review on IMDB criticized her heavy white makeup, but HELLO, she's technically a chess piece! So I thought she played her role of the "nice sister" well.
The new Cheshire Cat? SO much better than the Disney one, I have to say. Instead of being a smart-alec all the time, he was actually helpful and caring, and he was pretty darn awesome.
I will admit there were plenty of flaws... At some points the comedy seemed forced, the "dance" at the end was awesome and I loved it, but out of place, some acting was a little spotty. The ending in general was a little disappointing, but not enough to ruin the movie. (The battle was awesome.. but the "epilogue" was a bit meh)
They had many, MANY references to
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and
Through the Looking Glass and as someone who loves the books, I was happy to be able to find them.
I thought the CGI was done really well, considering it was pretty much all CGI.. A little like Avatar in Wonderland
The artistry and imagery was breathtaking - Tim Burton does it again with his quirky darkness.
I'd rate it as a 9 out 10, it is now my 4th favorite Burton.
It's definitely not for everyone, while my three other friends loved it too, there were plenty who didn't... To each their own, but if you love Burton and you love Alice - you may like this film!
