algebra in 4th grade

Well for me, that would have been 3rd. 1st we did additon/subtraction. 2nd was multiplication/division. So by 3rd, in theory, I would have been ready for that. Though I have no memory of what we did in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade math. I do recall starting pre-algebra when I moved to middle school for 6th grade.
That's what I mean - they just started division and multiplication towards mid-end of last year. Now, to throw this on there, in the middle of perfecting that stuff. Ick.

25ish years ago, we had Algebra as a class in 8th/9th grade for advanced learners, or 9th/10th for regular learners and a very few kids allowed to start in 7th grade. I was in the advanced track so we had Algebra I in middle school, and high school was Algebra II, Geometry, Trig, Calculus.

However, I remember my Dad teaching me basic Algebra earlier, because I was in the group of kids that was allowed to take the SATs in 4th grade. Stuff like the problem Gumbo posted. Simple equations, where you solve for X. I'm also pretty sure we were learning some Algebra basics in 5th & 6th grades, but they weren't calling it Algebra.
