I'm helping my 8th grade nephew and we're stuck on a problem. I know someone here can help. Here it is--x+3+x/2=1. I can usually do them but the division throws me. Appreciate any help. TIA

You need a common denonimator to ad the x's together, then subtract 3 from both sides, multiply by 2, then change both signs.

-2x/2 + 3 + x/2 = 1
-x/2 = -2
-x = -4
x = 4

is it x + 3 + 1/2 x =1 ?

if so
x + 3 + 1/2 x = 1
x+ 3 - 3 + 1/2 x= 1 - 3 subtract 3 from both sides
x + 1/2 x = -2
1 1/2x = -2 simplify
1.5 x = -2 rename 1 1/2 to 1.5
Divide both sides by 1.5
x= -2/1.5 use the calculator

x+3+x must equal 2

Because the only possible way to divide by 2 and get 1 is 2/2=1

Soooo

2x+3=2
2x=2-3
2x=-1
x=-1/2

ta da!

I asked because typing it out here can make it look different than the original question.
x+3+x/2=1.

Where x + 3 + x is over 2

x + 3 + x = 1
2

is a totally different problem.

x+3+x/2=1

x + 3 + 1/2 x =1
1.5 x + 3 = 1
1.5 x = -2
x = -2 / 1.5
x = -1 1/3 (same as -1.33333)

At least that's how I'd do it . . . no guarantees though, lol.

You're right. I wonder which it is? :confused3

This sure beats checking my son's geometry work. lol

Here it is--x+3+x/2=1

And was the first x a positive or a negative?

That changes the answer as well.

I am such a math teacher- even on the disboards. :teacher:

That's my question, with the two dashes at the beginning, can solve until we know if the x is meant to be a negative or just misguided dashes prior to the problem.

The first x was not negative and the 2 went under the second x if that helps. I think I got -1.33 also. I'll find out for sure this afternoon if my nephew writes down the correct solution like I told him to when they correct the problems. Thanks for all your help, though.

I get -1.33 also.

x+3+1/2x=1
1.5x+3-3=1-3
1.5x/1.5=-2/1.5
x=-1.33

If it's x/2, it might be easier to switch to decimals & make it 0.5x.

I also got -1.33 (or -1.3333, since I have it drilled into my head to keep at least 4 decimal places :thumbsup2 )

The answer is 1.33. I can't set up the formula algebraically..can only do it in my head.
