Aldi now taking credit cards!

Well, that is good news, as I usually pay cash there now. They won't take AmEx though, which is my high rewards grocery card. Chase Freedom will be 5% on groceries April-June at least.

The closest Aldi to me had a sign up on the entrance door today stating they were now taking credit cards and had AmEx listed. Used my AmEx no problem buying milk today. Now if I can just remember the damn quarter if I am picking up more than two or three things.

Interesting. I will check it out. I was going by the website -

Aldi, in store, accepts cash, Visa Debit and credit, Maestro, Delta and Electron and MasterCard credit cards only. No cheques.

Perhaps that is not the US list!

Aldi's in Massachusetts takes AMex (at least that's what their weekly circular says)

Our Aldi's just opened in October. I go almost every week so I will have to start checking if they take credit cards. I REFUSE to use a debit card and I don't carry much cash, so I always have to make a special trip to the ATM before going to Aldi's and then stress out that I am going to spend more than I took out in cash. I really like Aldi's otherwise, but I will be thrilled if mine starts taking cards. I will probably be more inclined to buy some of the special buys in the middle of the store, right now I mainly stick to food so I don't go over my cash.

Just curious why you refuse to use a debit card. I have heard people have that opinion about credit, but never debit.

I won't use a debit card either. It's a direct line to your bank account, so if that card gets compromised, the money actually comes from your account, where a credit card can just reverse the charges. Sure, you get the money back, but it's not nearly as easy.

I get those concerns. I actually just had this argument regarding Dave Ramsey's method of using debit for everything and not even owning any credit cards. (I feel the credit cards are more "safe" and prefer to not use debit on a regular basis.)

I guess I just am not as adamantly opposed to using the debit card ever that I would go to the lengths the previous poster mentioned to shop at Aldi. So I was curious if there was something more behind their opposition to debit.

Personally, I would be just as concerned using an ATM to get cash as using the card at the checkout inside Aldi. Aren't ATMs one of the riskiest places for card skimming? (Along with gas stations)

That is awesome! I love Aldi but I always disliked that I couldn't use my CC there to gain miles :)
Discovered this the other day when I stopped..... I had been avoiding Aldi for big shops, not b/c I don't like them, but b/c I like to get rewards points for purchases on my cc.... so I would head across town to the other discount grocery b/c they take cc's..... I LOVE IT! The cashier informed me that other states Aldi have taken cc's for a while now, but our state just started..... YAY! As to prices, we still have another discount grocery near us that manages to keep prices about on par with Aldi and take cc's.....

Awesome!! I am so glad you like it, it took me a while to get used to it.. Just a different experience than a regular grocery store! My fiance was apprehensive but once I got him to come in with me he loved it, in and out in 20 minutes, takes so much less time than a regular trip for us. We only have 2 stores in our area and both don't take CC but I'm hoping when I go this weekend that they will. :)

My cards get compromised all the time, probably once a year or so. I use credit pretty much exclusively for all purchases if possible (airline rewards). I don't shop at sketchy places, mostly big box stores, chain restaurants, major gas station chain and major websites like amazon, target, etc. It's just a sign of the times I guess. If my credit card is compromised, I call, they cancel the charges and send me new cards. There is not a lot of personal risk to me or my personal finances. If this would happen to my checking account, it could be a MUCH bigger hassle. Yes, the money would most likely be refunded, but it takes awhile and there is more work on my end. So no, I don't want that kind of direct access to my checking account.

I am fairly comfortable using my ATM machine because it is at a major bank branch and a very busy location so it is serviced very frequently so I a feel the risk for a skimming device is pretty low at this particular machine (right across the street from the Aldi's).

I use my main credit card just like a debit card. I deduct all my purchases from my checking register (app). That way when the bill comes, I know the money is there to pay it and I can't overspend. We use another card for large or unexpected emergency purchases but for everyday purchases we use our credit card just like a debit card but its safer.

I keep one hidden in my console of my car so I always have it.

I don't mean to hijack this thread but can you guys share what you will/ won't buy at Aldi? I have NOT had good luck with their meats but haven't tried any in the past 3 years or so. I mainly buy produce there and only if I am in the area for work. Am I missing any good products?

I don't buy meat there except their ground turkey sometimes. I find the produce hit or miss. Sometimes its amazing and other times it is very picked over, but when it is good, it is amazing. I also find their cereal to be expensive. Usually I can do better at the regular grocery store with sales/coupons. But other than that, I buy everything else there. You just can't beat their prices and the quality is very good. I always go to Aldi's first and then the regular grocery store for any sales, meats, and the few items I can't find at Aldi's. I love the weeks when I just can get away with Aldi's, as I am in and out in 20 minutes!

Here's a recent thread with lots of suggestions about what products people like at Aldi:
http://www.disboards.com/threads/aldi.3481983/

They do have a lot of organic products and they are cheaper than the generic non-organic at my regular grocery store, so I usually buy those products at Aldi. (Canned beans, grains like quinoa/farro/etc, salsa, apple sauce, etc) I have also had good luck with their "nicer" cheeses. Guests always compliment them and assume they're much more expensive-- I just tell them they should start shopping at Aldi.

Their meat has gotten so much better, they even have grass fed beef now. I do probably 90% of my shopping at Aldi, lots of organic options.

And while I said mine wasn't accepting credit cards earlier in the week I went in yesterday and sure enough they are now. Yay!

so you had to have enough cash on you to shop there? I never heard of this ! ( we don't have this store in my state)

There is an Aldi opening near me! I am so excited, we have a couple in our metro area, but all of them would have been super inconvenient to get to. I've been looking for ways to cut our grocery bill as we're trying to incorporate more fresh produce, and this will definitely help!
