9a or 9c?

Cruise Itinerary: 7-Night Alaskan Cruise from Vancouver Category: 09A

Total Due: $4,468.86. August 28

Based on current rates thinking of downgrading. Thoughts? Save the money or will I regret?

We stayed in a 9C, Deck 2, Aft Elevators, Port side, 2116. LOVED the location. Easy walk up 1-2 decks to the restaurants, elevator up to deck 9 right by the beverage station and the buffet. Loved being so close to the water. Loved the big porthole!

Save the money for excursions!

Thoughts....
  • if that's a Deck 2 Oceanview.... KEEP IT! Do not get tempted by downgrading to the "twins". Deck 2 is like a climate controlled balcony.
  • August sailing? While affordable it's also the Alaskan wet season. It's wetter in Alaska in September.
  • Your return date is September 4th. That is a very busy day in Vancouver from a long weekend.

If I go to deck 2 I would have to see what is open since that's the downgrade

Currently on deck 5 at the higher rate.

The July dates are just too pricey as of now. Doubt they will lower.

I just checked the dcl website for 8/28.

Deck 2, 9C (forward or aft) is $3838.86 for 2 people. Of the Aft rooms, I'd go for 2614, as it's the least aft. We had NO issues being near the elevator, only noise is people walking down the hallway which you would hear anywhere. The forward ones are pretty far forward, but it's up to you.

Deck 2, 9B (midship) is $3908.86 for 2 people. If you want midship, you just need to splurge $70 over the 9C category, and you're still saving over $500 from the 9A category. As far as midship--across from 2096 is the laundry, so you may want to avoid rooms right around that area as it'll be warmer there, and more traffic with people coming to/from the laundry.

We are staying in the exact same room (2116) on our trip to Alaska June 2017. Glad to hear the room was great!

fyi.... Deck 2 mid ship windows are a few inches larger than front and aft.
  • some say the mid ship has less motion
  • I stayed towards the front and morning docking can be noisy if you like to sleep in
  • I'll let others comment staying aft if engine vibration is a factor
  • get "port side" for privacy in Vancouver

If you click on my trip report in my signature, you can see some pics of the room from this August. Who knows what they'll look like after dry-dock. I'm not sure how much work they're doing in the staterooms as they did redo them in 2015. (But it could use a paint job, and bathroom floor tiles replaced--we had one come loose, they fixed it as soon as we mentioned it.)

This was our first cruise, I think this is about as far aft as I'd like to be as you can feel some of the vibrations (but no where near as bad as our first night in Parrot Cay). I loved that with the elevator hallway right there, it felt much more open to get into your room vs. being down one of the long narrow hallways. It's also a short trip to the laundry across from 2096.

Enjoy your cruise!

We stayed in a 9B in Alaska in August and couldn't have been happier. We like the slightly larger windows mid ship and also, it's really easy to quickly get forward or aft from midship. For me, the extra $70 for a midship room would be a no-brainer.

We are also on the August 28th sailing, on deck 2 in a 9C. I'm not giving it up for love nor money ;-) I'm excited for this cabin! FYI we live in Vancouver (just outside) and disembarking on Labour Day will be fine. Will probably be quieter downtown since it's a holiday. Although expect transit to be running on holiday schedules so Skytrain and Canada Line won't be as frequent.

9a or 9c?

Cruise Itinerary: 7-Night Alaskan
I took my parents 70's, daughter 16 and myself 52 in cabin 2008 a 9c cabin and we did fine. Loved the location on the ship. No traveler traffic and the view was possibly better when you arrived in port than a 9a since a period of time at port dock will cover the windows. I would do it again.

My family had three 9C rooms (2112, 2114 and 2116) on our Alaska cruise in 2014 and loved them. That is our favorite location on the ship, especially for the price. They were very quiet but also very close to the aft elevator and stairs.

We had no vibration issues there. We started staying on deck 2 because we heard it was better for those with motion sickness. My daughters and I are very prone to that, and on the rare occasions (out of 6 cruises) when we started to feel ill, I did feel significantly better in our room on deck 2 than I did on the higher decks.

That's enough for extra hotel nights in Vancouver, internet, photo package and shore excursions.
