Just heard on the news that Alaska is having record-breaking heat. Some of that would've been nice when we were there earlier this month.

Seems even Fairbanks, which can get c-c-c-cold even in the summer, was warmer than Honolulu today.

Talkeetnah on the west coast (don't know if any cruise ships go there) was in the 90's today. gasp.

Gives new meaning to the term "baked Alaska."

Ugh. I'm glad I'm not going to Denali this summer. I can imagine what the mosquitoes are going to be like in that heat. :crazy2: FYI, Talkeetna, AK is a small tourist town about half-way between Anchorage and Denali National Park. Nice stop on the drive up to the park, with some interesting artwork, but no cruise ships .... it's on the Susitna River, not the coast.

On the flip-side, there may be more opportunities to see the glaciers calving.

Yep, it's been 70-85 almost 2 weeks now! Even at 11pm it's sunny and 70- we are loving our heat wave and if you are worried about Mosquitos, don't- it's so hot they are not a problem :) Have a great trip!

I have been wanting to cruise Alaska for a while now. DH says he does not want to go because of the cold. I sure hope this warm spell in Alaska helps to change his mind, even though I do know it's not always so warm there.

Thanks for the clarification. The graphic on the news had it in the wrong place. come to think about it, they misplaced Anchorage too. :confused3

My husband worked up there for about 6 months some years back and I went up to stay for the summer (Anchorage). The whole summer was surprisingly HOT! Then, like overnight, it turned into September and started snowing. So funny.

If I lived in Alaska, I imagine I'd welcome the warm weather. However, I like visiting cooler places to escape the summer heat, and warmer places to escape the winter cold. It felt great to wear long pants and a jacket on my August 2011 Alaska cruise. Last year at this time - I was bundled up on a Norway cruise as we crossed the Arctic Circle. In January I'll be in Australia during their summer. :)

We are definitely having a heat wave up here. It's in the 70s again today in Anchorage, and we had some record breaking mid 80s days earlier this week. The mosquitoes have been pretty bad in Anchorage--out in the wooded areas and grassy areas. We're thinking they're worse this year because we had a really late spring with record late season snowfall in May.

Be prepared for layers, just in case, coming up here. As I said, it was in the 80s earlier this week, with Thursday and Friday being in the 60s and today it's back up to the 70s. Either way, enjoy our beautiful state!
