Where is the best place (port) to pan for gold? Is there a place close to port that we could go and pay to pan for an hour or so. I saw the excursion in Juneau but felt $68 was a little steep. We will also be staying in Vancouver the week after the cruise, so if it would be better to do it there, we could.

Well you won't have much luck finding anywhere to pan for gold in Vancouver! (I am from there originally…It is a large metropolitan city, not a gold rush town like those found in the Interior of BC - North East of Vancouver)

Your best bet is to do it in Alaska. We booked the one in Skagway - Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp and Salmon Bake - mostly because you are guaranteed to find gold (I'm sure they salt the streams for the kids) and the Disney Characters show up during the Salmon Bake… it was also cheaper than the one in Juneau too!

Just a word of caution. My friend panned for gold in Arizona and lost her wedding rings in the rushing water. She had them specially made for her and her husband and she was a bear to be with the whole vacation by the time I got there she was hardly speaking to anybody she was so worried what her husband would say. So take off all your rings before you pan for gold. Just thought I'd let you know. :D

We haven't actually done this excursion yet....We are on the DVC Members cruise next week - it will be our first time! The contributing factors on our choice of this one were: A) My daughter is only 7 and still somewhat into the characters, B) it was the cheaper option C) gold panning was a must.... although we can do it almost any time we want in the Interior of BC where we live.... we just haven't yet! ;)
