Hi Guys,

Was just messing around with the rental rates and I found a really good one for Costco members. We had initially rented with Enterprise and got a good rate of 237 American which is 269 Canadian. This was without any coupons for the dates of August 10-16, 2009. I checked with Alamo under costcotravel.com. Costco has a special now where you get 10 percent off and a free day with a compact. The base rate was also quite a bit lower.

So our rate is now $127.42 before taxes and fees and $178.46 after. That is about $202.59 canadian with today's exchange. Ill post this also in the Transportation board without the Canadian exchange if I am not making sense.

PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for posting this!

I too am looking for a car in August and the prices are terrible.

Every little bit helps!

Np...I am constantly trying to get a better rate.

I think you need to bring your costco card with you.

I agree, the rental rates now are insane. I have been monitoring Aug. rates for a couple of months now. I have 2 res. (with Budget & Alamo using the U.S. Costco site).
The best rate I found was a couple of days ago using a Canadian Costco code, with Budget. It's for Costco Members
Regular membership A017601 or Exec. Membership A017600
You will be asked to show your costco card.
call 1-866-462-8348
I was also able to add an Entrtainment coupon for $35 off too.

Good luck to all of us waiting for rental rates to go down!

Check out Dollar. I have consistantly had better rates with them this year than with any other company. You get good rates with the Amex code and for FL there is one from the visitors bureau. Also, leave the code box blank and see if there are any city specials. Quite often those are the best.

For our vacation at the end of August I really only need a car for a day or two and have booked a compact from Dollar with pick up being at the Regal Sun (beside DTD). The rate including all taxes is $25 USD per day.

That Costco deal sounds really great.

Another advantage booking Alamo through Costco Travel is that you can add an extra driver for free. It is usally $10.00/day extra. Did this last year so DW could go shopping and I could relax at the pool.

Check priceline!!! See our rental below for $117/week.

You can bid on a car - put in the size, exact pickup dates etc .... you do need to give a c.c. # .... and if you get your bid your card will be billed and can only be cancelled if you can prove your flight / vacation was cancelled. 2 years ago we got a car through Alamo for $13/day! less than 1/2 Alamo sight ..... and absolutely no hassle (we were worried about extra fees etc when we get there...seemed too good to be true). It was perfect! we just showed them our booking reference at the airport - and were driving away in minutes!

This year we started going on to bid a couple of months ago and found a great deal without having to pay up front! (can be cancelled a week in advance). This was on priceline - just checking their partner rates.

It is for a midsize - see info attached copied from my confirmation:

Rental Partner: Advantage Rent-A-Car Car Type: Mid-Size Car
(Unlimited Mileage)
Pick-Up Date: August 1, 2009 - 12:30 A.M. Drop-Off Date: August 18, 2009 - 7:00 A.M.
Weekly Rate(2 x $116.97) $233.94
Extra Day Rate(4 x $23.39) $93.56
Subtotal: $327.50
Taxes and Fees $77.57
Estimated Total Charges: $405.07

* Prices are in US dollars

This is for 18 days! The next time we went onto priceline - the prices were much higher ..... you need to check regularly as they seem to have promotions.

Wow! That's a great rate! I wonder if you can do one way rentals with them? We are picking up car from Ft. Lauderdale airport, and returning car after we check in at our WDW resort. Which is why Budget or Alamo is good, because the have rental desks in WDW. To rent from Advantage, I prob. would have to take a cab back to WDW.

Also got a decent rate on Costco.com today.
6 days in San Diego for a midsize car. $137 which was close to $100 less than the other rentals.

You can do different pick up and drop off locations with priceline. Last time we rented with them we picked up at Ft lauderdale airport, dropped off at Orlando airport..... no extra fees. The wanting to drop of right at disney I guess would cause a problem though unless it wa sone of the companies with a car rental desk there.
As well - for any of you renting - take your GPS with you if you have one! Makes life so much more pleasant when you get there ..... and renting one is very expensive!!

Excellent tips, thanks everyone. Time for me to get on this. We are costco members and just "inherited" an entertainment book (which is kinda lame for Halifax, but the travel discount helps).

We have always booked Alamo with the Costco code discounts. We have a midsize SUV for 9 days in August for $239 US.

BTW, I have never been asked to show a Costco card or the coupon you are supposed to print off. Although I always have them just in case.

We have always booked Alamo through the Costco website and we have gotten really great deals. Make sure you choose Canada as your country...the price is lower than if you leave the US as country. I can't remember the exact price but our last trip (April-May), we paid less than $250 for a full size vehicle for 12 days (with two drivers). There is no wait or hassel when you arrive and we have never had to show our card (although we always have it with us). Keep checking websites for discount coupons as well because you can use both!
