I was going to be in town for just 2.5 days this past weekend, so I picked the cheap Alamo weekend deal of a Chevy Cobalt or similar 4 door for $64 all in for a 3 day rental that had to include a Saturday night. On arrival, they had none, but gave me a Monte Carlo coupe. This was the "standard" upgrade per the desk lady. While the garage was full of Malibu Maxx's and G6's, they wouldn't budge on giving me one unless I paid the rate for those (over 2x my rate). Given there were just two of us we took the Monte and headed off. As this wasn't a Disney trip, but a central Florida college visit trip, the comfortable coupe seating and huge trunk were all we needed. Gas mileage at 25 mpg for the trip was only average due to the bigger 3.9L 240HP V-6 in the rental. This was offset by relatively cheap gas (low of $1.989 in north central FL and high of $2.279 near Daytona). So for $64.19 we got 684 miles of rental car usage and paid just under $60 for gas to fill the car.
Lessons learned - sign-up for the "cheap deals" email with Alamo to get good rates on short notice and be flexible in what you expect to get when you arrive later in the night (8 pm).
