Alamo and adding a driver

Our trip has totally been changes up since we planned it. DH can no longer go. We have rented a car through Allegiant, (which is an Alamo car) for a week. My parents are now coming with me instead. I am the listed driver on the car. My mom, DD and I are going on the Disney Dream for 3 days and my dad is going to take the car to his sisters house and visit while we are on the ship. Will he needed to be added as an additional driver? I know spouses can drive the car with out adding, but I'm not sure how parents/ kids work? If I do add him, what is the cost..approximately.

A parent or child isn't your spouse and isn't covered automagically. You will need to add them as an additional driver at an Alamo station. Expect a charge of at least $5 per alternate driver per day.

Thanks. I did try doing some looking. the actual Alamo sight isn't very helpful at all. I did find on mousesavers that they charge as well. They estimate $10 a day. I guess if dad wants to drive it, he will have to pay it then.

Just to reiterate, you can add Dad as an additional driver at any point during the rental process. So if he's not driving till day 6, add him them, reducing the cost. I believe there's an Alamo location in the Swan or Dolphin.

He will be driving it day 2 through 5. I don't know if we can only pay for 4 days? We won't be able to go an add him on on day 2 as we will be getting on the ship and then I am not about to hassle with going anywhere after the cruise to get him taken off. So I don't know if that would worK?

Are you a Costco member? If you are and rent with there codes an additional driver is no charge. Also check out Orlando Magic Card, they have a corporate rate that is used with Thrifty that covers an additional driver at no charge. Anyone can use it. good luck!

I don't think spouses can be added as a free additional driver either.

According to what I read, yes they can.

No, I don't have a Costco membership. We have rented already through Allegiant, would that still work when we got there though? I think my mom has a Costco membership and she will be with us?

Oh wait, you said thrifty, that won't work. The car is already paid for at alamo.

confirming you can if you're a member of alamo's "insider club". This is free to sign up for on their website.

Goto Costco site, check under travel and go to Alamo and see if you can rent it for cheaper. Good luck :thumbsup2

But do you also have to be using the Insiders contract ID?

Not sure what you mean, but it just says to bring the card to add an additonal driver. You can't do it ahead of time. It doesn't matter to me now though, as my DH isn't even coming.

I can't change my reservation to go through Costco though. It's paid for already and it would be a $50 fee to cancel it. I'm sure not worth the costco savings. I got it at a really good rate anyways.
We usually go through Hertz because SIL works for them (she's kind of high up in our area) and we usually get a really good price from her, but this time going through the Allegiant site was even cheaper.

I rent thru alamo every year and I always list my DH as the additional driver. We give our license to the attendant as we depart and we were never questioned. Before Alamo installed the kiosk, I did the same at the desk. So I am not sure what you mean? Do you mean the spouse is not allowed to drive the vehicle? Or do you mean, the spouse is automatically an additional driver and doesnt need to be listed? Why wouldnt they be allowed to be added?

There is no reason a spouse can't be added. What is in question for me is the ability to add the spouse as an additional driver for FREE. Costco contract IDs offer this. I didn't see anything online at Alamo.com about this for Alamo Insiders. My wife is even an Alamo insider. I went through a rental using the Alamo Insiders contract ID which provides the 10% discount. And the fee screen does show an Additional Driver included with the rate.

My question is can you just be using the card and not the Insiders specific contract ID and still get the additional driver included. Also without insiders or any other contract ID that provides for an additional driver to be included, can a spouse be added as a free additional driver. Alamo usually charges $9.99 to add drivers to the contract.

From Alamo.com

"State law in California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, and Wisconsin allow the spouse to be an automatic authorized driver as long as renter qualifications are met."

I would assume that in other states they are not free as it does not specifically say. Enterprise allow the spouse for free but I have not heard that they have passed that policy to Alamo yet. In regards to using the Insider card, I have heard of people getting a driver added for free while using a different contract ID. My guess it is YMMV, kind a like their old program was.
