I just heard this on the news.

They said a train would be an easy target because miles and miles of train rails cannot be guarded, and it would be easy for them (the terrorists) to tamper with rails, and cause a train to de-rail.

That's really scary! I know when we took Amtrak a few years ago, I was shocked by the lack of security. Neither we or our bags were checked. I worried about bombs or other weapons on board. I mean, hijacking a train when it is going through a major city and crashing it into another train or a building would cause some major damage, especially if there were explosives on board. We are taking Amtrak again this August, and I am hoping they take this threat seriously.

WASHINGTON – Some of the first information gleaned from Osama bin Laden's compound indicates al-Qaida considered attacking U.S. trains on the upcoming anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. But counterterrorism officials say they believe the planning never got beyond the initial phase and have no recent intelligence pointing to an active plot for such an attack.

As of February 2010, the terror organization was considering plans to attack the U.S. on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. One idea was to tamper with an unspecified U.S. rail track so that a train would fall off the track at a valley or a bridge, according to a joint FBI and Homeland Security bulletin sent to law enforcement officials around the country Thursday. The al-Qaida planners noted that if they attacked a train by tilting it, the plan would only succeed once because the tilting would be spotted the next time.

Quite honestly, I thought about this a few years ago and wondered about it. DD and I went to D.C. for a weekend break. at neither station did we have our bags checked in any manner.

We get onto the train, it starts going, THEN a few minutes later, we are asked to show our ids

Can it really be that easy for them to stir trouble? They don't even have to do anything, just spread rumors that they were thinking about doing something and we unsettle ourselves they have too much power.
