I am a total Beach Club person (pastels, etc)...but this Jan we booked AKV for my daughter-in-law (complete animal lover). I am worried that the colors will be too dark for me (I know, picky, picky).
Am I nuts?
Thanks:confused3:confused3

Well....you're supposed to pretend you're in Africa, not the beach. :confused3

And remember, both resorts are just as dark as each other at night when your eyes are closed. :thumbsup2

I think it's nice when families are considerate of each other's preferences and take turns. I'm sure your daughter-in-law with be grateful as well. :)

As you can see, we own both BCV and AKV. Just let yourself go into the wonderful theming at AKV. It is so well done and the animals are an amazing experience. Totally different from BCV in a good way. Enjoy!

Enjoy the unique things AKV offers, like the storyteller at the outside fireplace in the evening.

It's beautiful at AKV. I hope you can overlook the darker hues and enjoy. :goodvibes

And if the dark colors get to you, just concentrate on the white mosquito net above the bed or the tent-like curtain cover(?) :rotfl2:

Your situation sounds just like me and my mom. :)

My parents own at SSR and my mom is a total beach person. She loves light and bright colors. I own at AKV since it's always been my dream resort and I am a huge animal lover. We took our first trip to AKV last May as a family. My mom mentioned that she was worried she wouldn't like the dark colors, but she wanted to go since I was excited about it. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, so me, DH, my sister, and her boyfriend went off to the parks while my parents waited around. While I was at the park, my mom ended up calling me to let me know they finally got into the room and she said it was amazing! I asked about the dark colors and she said that it actually didn't bother her. She said that she actually really liked all of the decor. It ended up being one of her favorite rooms in Disney since she loved waking up in the morning and sitting outside with her coffee watching the animals.

So go and enjoy it - you'll have fun. :)

thanks for all the great replies--I felt like such a whiner when I posted that. wanted to snatch it right back.

I should have remembered all the really nice people on this site.

This is our first trip in 5 years as both sons were in college and couldn't get away at the same time so all 7 of us are going for TEN days. Really looking forward to it and I know my DIL will love the AKV.

I feel the same way and will be staying at AKV in just a few weeks. Only for 3 nights and then we move to the BC :) As we get closer I am getting more excited to see AKV. But the decor I do not think I will ever like.

we spent 5 nights at the villas last year (AKV-K 2br)..it was bad stormy weather and we all were fine with the colour scheme... no bouts of depression or anything :)

Honestly it's not bad at all; actually the lack of bright in your face colouring is soothing after a long day at the park :thumbsup2 Enjoy yourself - positive attitude = positive experience I have found. :cutie:

The decor is dark, but it really is a beautiful resort. But, I like a lot of the themes, and each one of them has a certain appeal whether it is OKW, AKV or wherever.

Not sure how you vacation, but we spend very little time in our room. Last year our DD (who was 5) was a park trooper. We dont push her, as we are fine going back to hang by the pool, or take her in for a nap if she wants one. I dont ever want to drag a miserable child around the parks, we just wont do it.

So - we dont spend much time in our room, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the AKV rooms - thought they were very nicely done.

I too am a BC person but when we went in May, my adult son really wanted to try AKV. So at 7 months, I gave up my beloved BCV 2 bedroom and switched it to AKV.

I loved it. Honestly, if it weren't for the location, I'd have to say that AKV is my favorite DVC resort (have stayed at all but BLT).

Funny thread- i've worried about the same thing. Goal of mine is to try different resorts but is still a leap of faith i guess!

Immerse yourself in the warm atmosphere of the resort. I think you will find that the darkness of the colors is quite appropriate for the African theme. We were there this past March and a couple of the days were very dark and rainy. It felt cozy to be inside such a warm place during such turbulent weather. And...it really is wonderful watching the animals from your balcony!

P.S. I am also a beach person, having spent many of my summers at the Jersey Shore. It's one of the reasons I added on at BCV and we'll be there next April for the first time. :)

No worries! You will love it! (although I am a bit biased!)

The theming is just wonderful. And watching the animals from your room is truly wonderful. (We are big animal lovers.)

We joined DVC just a few years ago and our first stay was a split stay between BCV and AKV. Although we really did like BCV, upon checking in at AKV, our immediate thought was, "We should have stayed here the whole time!"

We LOVE it.

You'll have a great time!

We do not like the dark colors at AKV, mostly because we tend to visit WDW during months that are cold in Minnesota and we want bright. That said, we have stayed at AKV twice and still enjoyed ourselves. We focused on the animals. We did not spend as much time in our villa as we would have at a lighter-themed resort.

Awww, you're not a whiner - we all just want to love the places we stay!

Fact is, the fabrics and furniture ARE darker than BC, but they are beautiful and appropriate in their own right.

And I predict that you are going to go nuts over the size of your balcony at Kidani. Our 2 bedroom balcony was absolutely the largest i have ever had at Disney. All 7 of your family will fit out there easily - and your could invite another family of 7 to join you and still have room!

Most importantly - you will be there with the people you love. Those colors will reflect back at you in their eyes and their smiles - and you will think they are the most beautiful things you have ever seen.

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your trip!

It's funny, but I was worried about the opposite situation last year when I stayed at BCV. I'm a total dark decor lover (hence the ownership at AKV), but the rest of my family loves the lighter beach themes (hence the ownership at SSR). We stayed at BCV for my mom and sister and I actually loved it. Hope the same works out for you in reverse.
