Looking forward to our October vacation which is 9 nights at AKV (our home resort) and then 7 nights at HHI resort. First time we have done this as we usually spend our whole vacation at AKV. We will be driving to SC on the middle Saturday - which seems to take 5 to 6 hours - and then back to MCO for evening flight to UK the following Saturday. Being from UK (Scotland) I have driven in U.S. many times and have no concerns but would be interested to hear if anybody else has done this trip and if so any tips on the best route as there are several alternatives according to Google maps etc? Also interested to hear views on HHI in October - it does look very nice! Any other advice most welcome.

I want to book at Hilton Head so bad, but it's not easy. I've tried on the first day for Non-Home Resort members. I was also told that there aren't many studios or one-bedrooms. That it's best to try to get a 2-bedroom. Is that true? A studio or one-bedroom works better for us.

It's true that there aren't many studios or 1 BRs. There are only 16 each of those. And if you're looking at booking for summer (or Thanksgiving), it can be a real challenge for non-Home Resort members. As far as which size unit is more readily available, we saw a situation that really surprised us last year. A couple wanted to stay an extra day. The front desk told them that all the two BRs were booked (where they'd been staying), and that if they wanted to stay, there were only 1 BRs available for that upcoming night. Fortunately, some of the party was leaving, and transferring to a 1 BR worked out fine. The DH said "Let's go pack and get ready to move!" I went to the front desk and commented on how surprising that was, and the CM explained that there are so many families that 2 BRs are popular, and that couples usually prefer studios, so sometimes 1 BRs are most likely of the sizes to be available.
BTW, if anyone's wondering why they wanted to stay an extra night, it was because some sports game was on TV, and they didn't want to chance not getting home in time to see it. Real devoted fans!

We are Hilton head locals. I live about 2 or 3 miles from the Disney resort. And we have annual passes to WdW and go several times a year. The trip is very easy and it usually takes us about 5 hours. The only hard part is getting through Orlando traffic. If you leave in the middle of the day it might take you an hour or two just to get through Orlando depending.

Just take i4 to i95. North on i95 to SC exit 8 then straight down 278 to the resort. It will take you about 35 to 45 minutes after taking the exit to Hilton Head

October/November is my favorite time of year in HH. The weather is great.. Warm and calm but not to hot. (Usually)

I would suggest you check out savannah Georgia while in Hilton head. it's very close to Hilton head and one of Americas oldest cities. Much like charleston sc lots of history.

We are also HHead locals, and this is spot on advice!

For the locals, how is the ocean in mid October? I love to swim in the ocean and I really hope I can when we are there in mid-October. TIA.

There is quite a bit of construction going on in Orlando and I-4 is a mess I would avoid if possible. We usually go around Orlando and go in the back gate.
