AKV/direct $108 pt.... what would you do?

The same can be said for members, however. I have four people staying in a grand villa in two weeks. My kids will each get their own bedroom. I would have never in a million years made that reservation with cash.

I agree wholeheartedly with your point, my point is we often talk about how our vacationing habits change and maybe we are not really saving money but whenever renting is talked about people talk about the enormous savings.

Btw, that is a sweet vacation, a GV for 4, fabulous, enjoy!

Missyrose is on my ignore list but thank you
But none of us would have any way of knowing that other than maybe the moderators if they specifically looked. There are several members of this board that ended up buying into other timeshares based on initial discussions here on DIS. In every case I'm aware of, they did proper investigation up front. I am not aware of a single one that is sorry they went that route of buying non DVC timeshares to supplement their DVC options. And while I'm sure many will disagree with me, my view is it's not possible to truly know and understand DVC without having at least a working knowledge of other timeshares. It's like going to buy a car you like but you haven't looked at the other cars in the same class. I feel just as strongly that the wrong type of info and experience is just as bad, if not worse. I think many have the experience, or know someone who did, of bad timeshare tours and buying timeshares at retail rates they didn't need, didn't understand, and didn't use appropriately to get value from.

...based on some of the comments you have made, I don't really see the evidence to support this statement. Not knowing about DVC (or anything else for that matter) is not a crime, nor is it an inherently bad thing. There are plenty of topics that I don't know a lot about. Whenever they come up, however, I stop talking and start listening. In the case of this message board, problems occur when you don't know about a topic but you act like you do. It becomes especially problematic when other neophytes read these false or misleading statements and take them as fact.
We're all in that boat, that's what makes sites such as DIS so valuable, we can pool our resources and usually get better and quicker info than any other route. I've seen it many times where someone attends a timeshare tour and is convinced to buy, reads through the glossy materials, has a couple of conversations with a company and all of a sudden they know the system inside and out. I've seen it with DVC and with other timeshares but it seems to be more common with DVC. I can think of a couple of specific good examples on this board related to none DVC timeshares as well and I suspect we've all been there for one issue or another over our lifetime. I've also learned the most when I said or posted something based on what I though was true that ended up not being correct.

To me this comes down to micro managing vs macro managing and where the proper balance lies for a given family. To me, as long as you know what you're giving up and understand the implications, it's a personal choice. Just like I have an exchange into DVC coming up but we'll only use 3 days of it, something I could never justify on points directly.

I was just letting you know cause I was wondering what the acronym was . I didnt expect you to know she was blocked

See, here is the thing we never say about renters, Would they ever, EVER, rent a 1br suite in a villa for rack rate? I think renters enhance their accomadations but would strongely, respectively, disagree that anyone who rents truly saves 50%;)

Perhaps I should have been more clear. I was simply illustrating the savings between booking a room (specific category doesn't matter) at rack rate vs. the cost of the same exact room by renting DVC points. The reason I made this statement is because there seem to be more and more people on here saying that they do in fact pay rack rate for their rooms and then they use those numbers to justify their purchases. I was simply illustrating another option that came at a great savings as compared to paying rack rate. :)

Hey Y'all!

First off, you all are the MOST knowledgeable people ever. Thanks for all your info in advance!

We are planning a trip for the end of Dec, beginning of January. My son is currently a CM so we can get a 15% discount through him or Disney currently has a 20% promotion going for AKV. This would make our points $108 instead of $135.

Are you sure about this? When I spoke with a DVC person a few weeks ago they said their current promotion is receiving 10 points for every 100 purchased. The 20% ended in June

If this is true can you share where you saw this information?

Thank you

I was going back through my notes and it says 20% anniversary or add. 10 points per year or cast discount of 15%. So I'm not sure. I need to double check that I'm getting the full 20%.
I'm thinking that possibly CM's (and their families) get the 20% until the last day of September so possibly the 20 year special is extended for just them? I know we have to do this by the last day of Sept. That's the only thing I can come up with. Unless it has to do with AKV specifically.

Unless it is a CM offer the 20th anniversary special is the 10 points for every hundred or 20 points for 200 puchased. I had to read it a second time myself when I received that email as at first look I though it was 20% too. Again may be different for Cm's

You might want to call and check. It's saving us $27 a point.

I did call and ask when I saw your post and I was told the only offer they have right now is 10 points for every 100 purchased at AKV the 20% ended at the end of June.

That was the reason I asked where you saw that offer because of what I was told when I called to inquire about it. We were going to call this week to purchase and would go for this offer if avialable. If you want to pm me with the info that is fine too

Thanks

All I have is a hand written paper. I did have to have my son email a picture of his badge during all of this so I bet it's a CM benefit right now.

When I talk to them later this week I'll definitely ask.

Just buy enough resale points to go to Disney every 2 to 3 years by banking and borrowing. We cought AKL resale for $56pp!

DVC points are too valuable to use in RCI system IMO. If you like RCI exchanges buy a cheaper timeshare to exchange. We own one in Austria we've never been to, we just exchange our week for other places and it was only $7K for the 100 year contract!

What's your yearly dues for that? (my husband is going to barr me from ever looking at these boards again if I tell him I'm going to buy TS with another company!)lol

I'm not sure about her fees but I have a 1 BR RCI points resort yearly that costs me just over $325 a year plus the RCI points membership dues which also give you access to much of the RCI week inventory. There are many examples of cheap up front and cheap yearly fees but many of them don't offer much trading power. For RCI weeks you can check out the TPU and for RCI points, the number of points a given option gives you. That's why one has to spend time evaluating the options.

I want to thank you Dis Board vets for taking the time to write out some of the most exceptional and patient replies on this thread. More then one person reads them, and its been an education for me. Thank you so much!:thumbsup2

I second that! :grouphug:

Our dues are $480 per year. Overall huge savings over booking any hotel even factoring in $90 ecxhange fee (or whatever it is right now.) We've been to some great places over the years...Maui, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Willimsburg, Cancun, etc. Not that it matters, but we exchange through II.

It's all about money. I don't need a DVC membership to stay at WDW or even to stay in DVC villas. I could just call up Disney and give them my AMEX and make a reservation.

The minute DVC isn't providing me a meaningful financial benefit, I will sell it. To own for any other reason, well.......:confused3 :rolleyes1 .
