I'm one of the 14,000 or so displaced from the CBR - decided to take advantage of the reasonable cost to upgrade to the AKL for the week; presently reserved in a standard room with savanah view.

Traveling with DW and two DS's (ages 4 & 7½) - our first real "family" vacation (one that doesn't involve a stay at grandpa's house)!

Would very much appreciate any suggestions and/or feedback re: staying at the AKL. Recommended room type? Room location? On-site activities? Pool experience?

Anything that might prove useful or just plain interesting...

Thanks! :teeth:

We loved AKL. You can't beat a savannah view! It was truly memorable and wonderful. The rooms are on the smallish side, though, for a deluxe resort. You might want to ask for a room with bunk beds if your sons would enjoy it. It just frees up a little more floor space. (The rooms are about the size of a moderate.)

Also, we loved eating at BOMA -- has some excellent "unique" foods, plus all of the standard buffet items.

I'm sure you'll have a great time! Enjoy!

You can't go wrong with any location, but you could be in for a long walk.

The pool is great. DKs love the slide and zero entry.

There is story telling in the lobby.

The firepits are pretty cool, too.

Enjoy!

DS and I just had a wonderful stay at AKL - be sure and check out the schedule on the back of the resort map they will give you at check-in - it lists all of the activities going on at the lodge that the kids can attend if they want. We found it interesting to watch the keepers come through in the trucks early morning and late afternoon to put out the fresh food/leaves for the animals. If you wake up at night, be sure and look out - I woke up at 4 AM one morning and ended up sitting out for over an hour (!) because the animals were the closest and most active I'd seen them and it was so beautiful! If you're not staying in a savannah room there are a few quiet overlooks scattered through the resort that you can access right from the hallways (the one on Zebra 2nd floor had scopes). If it's not raining and your boys are ever up later (about 10 in the summer, may be earlier in the fall), they might like the night vision tracking. I would request any room overlooking the main savannah with Arusha Rock, we liked the Zebra trail as it was the closest to the pool and restaurants. We aren't 'big meal' eaters, but did try the breakfast buffet at Boma on our last day and it was delicious with a huge selection of foods - Enjoy!!
